View Full Version : Why I hate the Super Bowl but watch it anyway

Well first off, I'd like to say that I'm a real football fan. I watch a bunch of games every weekend, and know just about everything there is to know about the sport. I love it.
But to start off, it's not for the fans. I mean, it's fucking impossible to get a ticket to the game without paying about 500 bucks, and it's not like there are tickets for the real football fans who deserve 'em. Celebrities will be all over the place in the crowd, and I"m sure Fox will be plugging about 800 tv shows on their network, and that's simply not fair if you ask me. Fans who watched their teams for the last 5 months are totally blown off so that every celebrity can get some airtime on tv to just show everyone that they were at the game, when most of them don't know what a 1st down even is. It gets me so angry, b/c the fans who are dedicated to their team deserve better than that. And the halftime show, oh god give me a break, does it need to be half an hour long? IT's just incredibly frustrating to be a football fan and have to put up with the spectacle that the Super Bowl is.
But what's stupid is that I"ll watch it anyway, because I am a fan of the sport. So I'm stupid for doing that, but what can I say...I'm sure there are plenty of people who don't like football and think I"m nuts for caring about the super bowl, when it's just supposed to be a fun party, but still...i wish it was more for the fans, like other sports seem to be.

You see, that is exactly the thing about the Super Bowl. It's not a game...it's a media circus...it's a party...it's an excuse for non football fans to party. The real fans don't like it because it just isn't about the game anymore.
Ask a handful of football fans who even played in it say 2 years ago, I'll bet at least 2 can't tell you.

I think one of the worst things is the speed at which the halftime entertainers have to get through their song...
They try to fit too many in and it's like you got the 45 on 78(think that's right?...
They should have one group and let them Rock the place for 30 minutes...

How about the halftime entertainers themselves. Isnt that punishment enough, hint on this one Aerosmith and N'Sync doing a duo...uggghhh, die get in the coffins sirs!!
The commercials are supposed to be the real big event of the Super Bowl in case you havent noticed anymore. They plug the commercials better than they do the Super Bowl.

I agree Sunndoggy, that is why the past few years I only basically watch it with people that actually love the sport. Most of the people watch it just for an excuse to party and not even pay attention to the game. After sitting through a whole season watching the Redskins I think I deserve to watch the Super Bowl with true fans.

I like the commercials but that isn't enough for me to watch the super bowl.

Poison Ivy, Jester, ect, I'm glad that some people agree with me! It really isn't that big of a deal in the grand scheme of life, but I live and die with my sports teams, and I take it seriously more than the next person. The worst is when I'm at a super bowl party and I'm pointing out different defensive lineups and hot reads, and people just give me that blank stare...
But I'm glad that other people feel the same!
And by the way, thank god theres only a week between the nfc/afc champ. games and the super bowl! I can't take those 2 week breaks that the NFL usually has.

I thought two weeks is great. With two weeks we can get more media coverage, overview of the halftime show, hype that usually leads to a letdown, etc..

Hey sunny, you bring up alot of valid points, but you have to remeber a few other things as well.
The superbowl has become the biggest event of the year in sports. It draws the highest ratings over anything and it is what EVERYONE talks about for most of january into febuary.
So with that, comes an influx of people who are not fans (kind of like the people who just go to church on Christmas and Easter) they feel like they should be watching cause it is the "thing to do"
so therefore, alot of times the game itself is lost behind all the bullshit surrounding it to make the game more of a show for all the non-football fans.
but, I don't think this is all a bad thing.
Anytime there is something that draws friends and family together in my opinion is a good thing.
I know this Sunday I will be hanging with some of my best friends (guys and girls), my family members and alot of others I don't get to see that often.
All of my friends that I am not with, will be calling every quarter and I know they are doing the same thing as me (drinking and partying with friends and family as well.)
It is just a great day all around... It is a day where everyone just forgets about all the shit that is going on in life, relaxes, and enjoys a great game...It reminds me of St. Patty's day, another day where everyone gets together to party and forget aout all there troubles!!!
and since none of the Home teams are playing I am not even 100% into the game.
So when your pissed about all the bullshit, take a moment to look around and appreciate one of the few times everyone gets together and party's like champs, cause days like that are becoming more and more rare.

There is nothing more exhilerating than pointing out
the shortcomings of others, is there?

Yes the super bowl is the biggest sports event of the year, but that's b/c of the real fans, who hyped it up over the years and made it what it is. It wouldn't be the "thing to do" if it wasn't originally a big huge deal to those that actually cared about the game and not the commercials. And these people are screwed over. That's what makes me angry. Like said previously in a different post, most people don't know who played in it even last year, let alone years past. They talk about it for a week, and that's it.there are people who remember Survivor 1 more than the super bowl that year, while the die hard fan is stuck at home dealing with an hour long halftime when he's the one that made football popular in the first place.
I understand that the game is catered for ratings and bringing in other fans.but that doesn't mean I have to like it. If I was a Pats or Rams fan, I would be screwed over, plane and simple. And even for the normal non sports fan, the hype and event-ness of the Super Bowl is a joke.
And that's great that you feel that it brings fans and friends together, and you bring up a good point that it is a time for most people to get together. But you brought up an interesting point.if you need an event like that to force yourself to get together with people who supposedly mean a lot to you, then maybe you (not you specifically TomPoo) need to reprioritize what really is important to you in your life. People should make those rare days, and not let a sporting event make them for ya.
Sorry to sound like an ass in this post, but I'm in a shitty mood, so take no offense if I come off like a jerk. Good save, eh? :)
