I'm not sure what you're inferring from what I'm implying. We all know Fez is all about the feelings and rights of others regardless of what he has to sacrifice to allow his brothers and sisters to enjoy them. The only thing keeping him out of the military was the discrimination against the Gay Americans, much like the way he heroically refuses to get married until gays are given that right as well.

Bill Maher is right. Obama needs to be like Bush in the sense that Bush pushed stuff through, not caring what others thought. Obama is trying to be all "come on now, lets all play nice and agree". He's a good guy but I'm tired of him trying to please everyone.

Is this a move to the center? It's been my impression of the president that he tells whatever group he's talking to what they want to hear. This is why his staff likes to keep him on the teleprompter. Now you can say all politicians do that but as was stated earlier in this thread, there wasn't too much doubt where George Bush stood (or Reagan or FDR for that matter).
Maybe there is some truth to the charge that he has no core beliefs. Sure, he got the huge stimulus and health-care bills, but Reid and Pelosi deserve the bulk of the credit (or blame) for those.
I remember during the election, he met with the Palestinian leaders, who had a press conference stating he agreed with their position. Then he met with the Israeli delegation, who had a press conference stating he agreed with their position. After two years, these things are catching up with the president.
He could not have been clearer. he was going to end DADT. He probably lead the military leadership to believe it was going to continue. The gay-rights groups should feel deceived.
This stuff is bad, you wind up with nobody respecting you. Then your supporters get demoralized and sit out the next election.

They think that gay people will bring the morale down for other troops. They make it seem like if troops are in a foxhole getting shot at, the gay troops will be thinking about fucking another troop in the ass instead of killing the enemy. And that seems to be the thing people think about gays. That all they want to do if fuck each other and everyone else in the ass.

Brief, possibly inaccurate history.
Homosexuality was seen as a disorder, gays were given dishonorable discharges if they admitted to being gay. Sodomy was also a dischargeable offense. Clinton was going to allow gays to serve, Congress wanted to prevent it by enacting a law against it. DADT was the compromise, because Clinton, like Obama, buckled. Oh, my heroes!
Gays are not prevented from serving, only openly gay people. So, no matter what you do, there will be gays in the locker room (Lord Jezo and his pals are examples).
Gays should be allowed to serve, but any inappropriate behavior, consensual or not, must be punished, as it is with heterosexuals.
It is truly amazing how childish we, as a nation, can be.

Kind of what I'm getting at in 2010 (or 1994 apparently), how long has it been since that's been considered a disorder?
My point is I understand why politicians are religious idiots and why constituents are hayseed morons, my question is why in 2010 is this an issue legally? As in, how do they legally make this kind of stuff policy, what is their argument nowadays?

It had been considered a disorder since 1800's, 1970's it was declassified as a disorder.
The government must show a legitimate purpose to discriminate. It states it's purpose is to ensure unit effectiveness and cohesion or generally makes us less secure and weaker.

The State Department once wouldn't hire someone who was gay either. I don't know if this reasoning applied to the military too but the thinking was that person would be vulnerable to blackmail. But if that person is open about it, then they can't be blackmailed with it.
This whole policy is ridiculous. If they stay silent, celibate and don't mention it to anybody they can stay. If they're seen at a gay bar or caught living with someone in an apartment with only one bed, then they're discharged.
This isn't a right/left Republican/Democrat issue. It's bad management and those people who have been discharged because of it should get their careers back. Obama had the perfect pretext with this federal court ruling.

I think the Republican party has embraced that if they motivate their extremists they can win elections (without the religious right, the republicans would have lost every major election in the last 3 decades).
The left needs to realize that appeasing moderates is less vital than motivating the extremists to vote. If Obama embraced his role as a man of change, he would easily win reelection. The democrats forget that almost 50% of eligible people, don't vote. Work on getting the extremists to the polls, instead of placating the people on the fence.
Unfortunately, he may also be overestimating the potential of the tea party in the upcoming elections. He is not trying to give the Tea Party more ammo to use against him. Again, he should strengthen his base and not worry about those that would never support him anyway.
That being said, every gay organization should say that unless DADT is repealed they will vote out incumbents, regardless of party.

Beyond all the rhetoric, the overwhelming majority of Americans want this to become a reality. What has Obama running scared is that 70k people can suddenly have a domestic partner that the government is paying health benefits for. That scares the shit out of the Dems at a time when the reactionaries have made every single expenditure, well, a federal case.

It is a very simple explanation. The government doesn't want to admit that the military itself is a completely gay concept. Men saluting other men, dressing in tailored fancy uniforms, and having to call superiors Sir. Think about the greatest Military forces historically like the Greeks, Romans, English, and French. Gay, gay, gay, and gayer!

Wait, wouldn't somebody need to ask what they're doing at some point in either of those cases?
Either way the fact that there's any conversation about this whatsoever is disgusting, it's blatant discrimination.
I'm a fairly middle of the road to leaning right republican and most of the people I talk with that are politically aligned with my views even feel this don't ask don't tell policy is fucking stupid, so the only people in my book that is being appeased is the far religious right which is a small percentage that just makes a lot of noise, yet the left has no change of winning them over anyway.
The policy is archaic and it's disappointing the President did not show some balls and just lay down the law.

There are times when you can take an individual quote from Senator McCain and think he's a reasonable person. But of course there was this study from the Pentagon (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/11/10/AR2010111007381.html)that declared there was minimum risk in overturning the ban. And then today's article by Dana Milibank (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2010/12/18/AR2010121802738.html)gives you some good context on how this vote went down...and McCain really looks like the old man who just wants those damned kids to get off his lawn.

That's fucking bullshit too bc before this he was continually quoted as saying this report/survey would be the deciding factor in his vote and he knew exactly how it was being done. The results came out the opposite of what he wanted and now he can't fall back on it and say it's what our people wanted so he has to vote that way. Now of course the survey was at fault. Sorry, it's bs all the way.
He won't take the stand he wants to, always hiding behind some other reason that doesn't put him fully in either camp. They don't want to put to bed their fringe issues, without them (abortion, gay marriage and others) they lose a ton of voters bc they may actually pay attention to other topics.
