Yesterday, the Star Ledger, in their NJ.com online edition, posted a picture of the mother of a Rutgers football player talking with Greg Schiano, the head coach.

Taken out of that context, the picture seems innocuous.

However, in context, the photograph was snapped as the mother and coach were having an emotional breakdown due to the fact that the player, Eric Legrand, suffered a severe neck injury and was not moving on the field, and did not give the traditional "thumbs up" to indicate movement to the crowd.

There was many comments on the site that the picture was tasteless, because the mother did not know if her son would be paralyzed and what the extent was.

Do you think running the picture was out of line, or did it convey the story? Would a picture of the player lying on the field properly tell the story, or perhaps the players taking a knee in prayer?

I'm not linking the picture because I feel it was unnecessary and exploitative.

I would have included the picture with the headline, "HATE CRIME!?!"

I don't think it was out of line at all. Actually, I think it shows the classiness of the coach to comfort his player's mother who witnessed something awful happen to her son.

All of this. Tenbats really does live in some strange TMZ-type fog or something. I agree with AJ especially, and always get some good laughs from Matty posts. Hi mattmz tentagt! :bye:

That's an incredibly good picture that captures the mother's fear and the coach's concern properly.

I think they should both feel honored to be captured like that. It's a great picture.

there is an update to this story (http://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/index.ssf/2010/10/update_coming_on_legrand.html)

Rutgers defensive tackle Eric LeGrand suffered a spinal cord injury Saturday in the Scarlet Knights' 23-20 overtime victory against Army and has no movement below his neck, the school announced today.

LeGrand was injured while making a tackle on a kickoff with 5:10 left in regulation against Army. LeGrand lay motionless for seven minutes while his neck was immobilized and he was placed on a backboard and then carted off to Hackensack University Medical center.

The injury was at the C3-C4 level of LeGrand's vertebrae, and emergency surgery was performed to stabilize his spine. LeGrand is in intensive care at Hackensack and is expected to remain there for the near future, according to a statement released by the Rutgers athletic department.

It's ok because they were at the event. If they had been followed into a private office and had the picture taken, or at the hospital getting the news from the doctor, then no.

Ironically, today a Lions player sustained a neck injury on a similar kick return play near the same spot on the field. I was at the Rutgers game yesterday and watched the Giant game on tv today and the reaction by both teams and the silence of the crowd while they stabilized him and carted him off was earily similar. They both were taken to Hackensack University Hospital.

More coincidence than irony.

That said, I heard on the Giants radio broadcast that the Lions player does have movement, so it looks like he'll be OK.

Now, for people who wanted to talk about me getting sand in my vagina - there was 20-30 comments on NJ.com who said the picture was unneccessary. This was about YOUR opinion. Would you have preferred a poll?

God Bless him and his family. I saw the hit on nj.com. yesterday It didn't look that bad. But I guess one certain shot could end a career and a future. I feel sooo bad.

the oddest part, there are countless articles that have the video of the hit and him laying on the ground motionless. How many times have we seen thiesman, or napoleon kaufman, how many times did they replay dennis byrd or mike utley.

They ran a pic of a coach consoling the mother at the moment. Would you have rather a pic of him laying motionless on the ground?

I'm much more insulted by this thread than I am the picture.

And for the record, I find the photo to be kind of touching. The coach tried to comfort the mother in a difficult moment.

I agree.

A shot of medics surrounding the guy on the ground would be upsetting. Seeing two human beings comforting each other is really nice compared to the usual things that get printed.

I saw the footage of the hit and the aftermath on the BCS show and it made me sick to my stomach.

The way his body went completely stiff and you could tell he couldn't move was heart breaking.

I know there's usually never good news when this happens but I'll keep the kid in my prayers and hope for a full recovery.

on espn in the article they took the pleasure of putting in a video showing it from 4 different angles while they aired some schiano comments. real classy. It looked like he just got the top of his head hit and pushed down on his neck. Really scary. I had a hard time with it when i first saw it yesterday and then read the update today. I still have a hard time with it

Injuries like that is why I stopped playing football. A teammate of mine had a spine injury and I couldn't get what happened to him out of my head. He was OK, but he was hospitalized for months and of course, both his football and basketball careers were over.

I tried to start playing again a few years later, but they made us watch the mandatory spine injury video and I just couldn't bring myself to play hard at 100%. You can't play football scared. I knew I wasn't good enough to play in college, so I checked out right there.

When Liz was pregnant, I kind of wanted to have a boy to watch him play football. Then some of the memories came back and I realized I never wanted him to play football.

I think that's one of the reasons I didn't like the picture, is because it brought back memories of what happened.

It goes to show you how violent the sport can be.

That tackle probably happens 20 times a game w/o an issue.

This time it just went bad.

I wish more of the articles went with pics of schiano and his mom. Its really fuckin depressing me seeing this shit all the time
