speculate

It must have been an emergency, because if it was a planned day off, they would have assembled a new replay of stuff that hasn't been heard in a while, instead of using the best of satellite years show that they just played about 100 hundred times a month ago.

so tonight i'm watching the show Terriers on FX....its about a disgraced ex cop and his former CI (confidential informant) who have teamed up to become un-official private investigators. anyway, tonight's episode, one of the two main characters takes on the case of a tranny looking for her friends killer who was murdered.....in the episode she refers to herself as a "tranny" and a "chick with a dick"......i guess FX has to apologize to GLAD now too.

the point is, as annoying as these special interest groups are, with all their whining and bitching, and nit picking over the simplest of shit.....nothing changes....none of their petty bullshit makes us act any differently. There are still plenty of examples of shit on TV that you never thought they would be able to get away with. Stuff on South Park, Adult Swim, HBO, Showtime, Comedy Central in general.....for every whiny mincy little twit out there bitching about what ppl should and shouldn't say there are a million examples of how we still don't pander to those groups. i just hope i can remember that the next time i'm listening to the show and i start to get as annoyed as they are over the useless thought and speech policing that goes on, because its really just a bunch of dribble.

As Ron and many others have said many other times, the concept of banning words or applying special conditions to their usage only empowers them. For example, a non-black person saying "nigger" carries a tremendous amount of power compared to when a black person uses it. The acceptability of the word's usage is based on the user's race. The biggest determining factor in whether language is hatespeech is the race/sex/preference of the person using that language, making someone who would participate in labeling it hatespeech a bigot.

What bugs me the most about this subject, which is favorite on both shows, is the anger is usually directed at the special interest group, which is totally misplaced. People have the right to be offended, and they have the right to get together and voice their disapproval and even to misrepresent themselves as a larger portion of the population. Denying a person the right to be offended is legitimately oppressive. There is no law against saying gay, or tranny, or using any slur- this is all private sector pressure and you should be mad at the network that gives in or the person that apologizes. It isn't censorship because a group of people decide they want to pressure someone else into editing their content. The special interest group never takes possession of the offensive content and then distributes an altered version of it.

You should be mad at the media who makes a big deal of it, because they like sensationalist stories. You should be mad at the audience that pays attention, that doesn't realize that GLAAD goes after Jersey Shore because Jersey Shore is really popular and visible. If you're going to be mad at the offended people be mad at them because they dont realize how insincere GLAAD is actually being by ignoring low profile offenses in favor of a bunch of drunk morons.

You also have to consider that words that are every day words, perfectly acceptable words, which are no somehow moving into unacceptable territory, is not new at all. People honestly probably had the same exact conversations about the N word that we are having about the word "gay." Well gay doesnt mean gay, it isn't offensive when I use it. Do you think everyone called N-Jim that (and normally I would type the character name, because its a character name, but I'm at work) in Huck Fin because they didn't like him? No, they thought "Well why wouldn't I call him that, he's an N, it isn't offensive." Things will shake out, but at the end of it we may not be using or thinking about words the same way as when we were kids. It's not a new concept at all.

Everything should be judged on its merit, and intent. No word is categorically offensive. Those are the rules I want to play by, but those are rules that allow people to be offended and to take action if they want.

Gutter

thanx for the response guys.......all great points. i really find this a strange topic, as i think the emotion of being "offended" is mostly a created, self serving reaction. certainly the media plays a large role....people are offended and screaming from the rooftops everyday, but it doesn't become a real issue until some douche with a suit sticks a microphone in your face. anyway, i'm just glad i've got a place to rant......i'm offended by the fact that people get offended.

I agree with you about corporate caving to special interest groups for the high profile cases, which is the largest aspect of the new crusade against free expression. But I also take issue with the individuals and groups that are or claim to be offended by words. I guess you could say that I'm offended by their taking offense to words, and I have a right to my taking offense. And there are legal ramifications to using a slur, as illustrated by hate crime enhancements on criminal charges.

And it's an interesting point about the timeline of a word becoming unacceptable. I hadn't really thought about it, but it does seem that "nigger" probably went through a similar process that "faggot" is going through now. "Nigger" was likely the furthest thing from offensive when black people were considered lesser than white people, and as our views shifted to a semblance of equality, that term became offensive (at least for non-blacks to use). Hearing those old clips of Eddie Murphy using "faggot" on stage was interesting. He wasn't using it in the schoolyard sense of calling your buddy a "faggot" if he was being wimpy; he was using it to refer to homosexuals. Those Eddie Murphy routines were HUGE when they came out. I remember seeing Delirious all over HBO and Showtime, and Raw was gigantic in the theaters. That word was obviously a lot more acceptable a mere 25 years ago; now I'm sure Murphy wishes he never did those routines. It actually bothered me somewhat listening to that, and I had to think about why. All I can come up with is that idealistically, I believe that no word should be off limits. But I also realize that words are offensive to some people when used certain ways, and I'm not comfortable with people being offended. I would be very uncomfortable hearing someone make rape jokes in front of someone who was a victim of it. But back to my idealism, I guess I just wish that in a culture that championed freedom of expression at one time, we were a little thicker-skinned about mere words.

No word is off limits, there isn't a word you can say that will get you arrested. They want to say anything with no consequence, which is something else entirely. People in their business are trying to be provocative, you cant cry foul because you dont like the reaction you're getting.

This was getting on my nerves because seriously, you dont understand why they wouldn't let Roland in with a bunch of contest winners? How that might look bad to the contest winners, and Springsteens people, and everyone in the office?

And thats a conversation I'd love to hear. A boss quantifying to an employee why Roland is a big enough Bruce Springsteen fan to attend, but the other employees that want to go aren't big enough fans. "I'm sorry Johnson, I've heard you say around the office you're tired of the song 'Born in the USA' and we cant in good conscience let you into that interview, you just dont have what it takes. i dont know if this is newer, or they did this at WNEW and i never noticed, but i get really uncomfortable with their celeb interviews.

it starts with them making the celeb wait, then they will take a break to make them wait longer. You can feel little Jimmy being uncomfortable and Opie being passive agressive.

then they bring the person in, the rarely know anything about the person, and have made no effort the night or week before to learn anything.

they will then try to bring the celeb into the mix, explaining a bad Steve joke, or Bobo or whatever charectorer this celeb does not give a fuck about.

so now 10 mins in, the person has not talked about their project, and try to shoehorn in a plug. Or little Jimmy feels like Opie is doing a shitty job of mentioning the project and throws a plug in there.

I think it has come out more recently with Roland back and more celebs on the show. And by celebs i mean low B level guests.

thats funny, cause usually i hear them say, "oh, _____ is here? send him in" and then they come in and talk. jimmy's a pretty good interviewer as is ant and they mention the plug pretty frequently....basically before and after every break and a number of times before the end of the interview. Opie usually doesn't say too much during the interview because Ant and Jimmy are better at the interview...not that big of a deal. (oh theres a plug for Adam's show as we speak, as well as for Eddie and Lewis....go figure). i think you're way off base with this one....sounds like you're talking more about Stern than O & A....but i get it.....everyone here hates opie and anthony and jimmy cause this is ronfez.net and O&A suck and they're terrible people and Ron and Fez are infallible and he's the best interviewer ever and we shouldn't mention how Fez clams up during the interviews or how Ron gets peoples names wrong all the time himself, or that sometimes, he's also unprepared for an interview as well......i get it....i'll never understand it since the shows are so closely related, but i get it.

of course that is logical, i got that almost as soon as i thought it originally. i don't hate affleck, but i can easily believe him being passionless and dissociated from what a director wants him to do.

tracy morgan's another option. based on the tracy jordan character, who people have said is just like his real self, he could be a director's worst nightmare.

My brother listens to all of the smodcasts and tells me that on them he says this person was on Cop Out. So you have to assume it's Willis, Morgan, or Sean William Scott.

My guess would be Willis. He'll do any movie and you never hear Smith tell good stories about working with him, and a total fanboy like Kevin Smith was probably super excited to work with Bruce Willis.

I don't know, he worked with Willis on that die hard flick. Even though he only had a cameo, he would have seen how Willis was on set. If you picture tracy on 30 rock shooting that psa a few weeks back, it's almost exactly what Kevin was describing. No way do I think it's Scott, he seems way too in love wiith acting to be a dick like that.

I was going to guess he changed the person's gender, because I heard that Linda Fiorentino was an absolute DISASTER filming Dogma.

It's not Affleck because Smith always speaks highly of him and Damon.

Another person who I thought could be possible was Alan Rickman.

(But was this recently? I didn't hear the whole story).

It's NOT Willis - Willis is apparently one of the most drama and trouble-free actors in Hollywood.

he was talking about it on O&A yesterday. it's like #3 in the weekly wrap-up. i don't think he switched the sex, because it was a direct question if it was a guy or girl, given he couldn't outright name them. he was saying things like they'd set up a mark for the actor to hit and he'd end up 20 feet to either side or just wander off to the craft services table when kevin said "action." eventually he just told everyone that this guy set his own mark and they'd scramble to wherever he decided to start acting.

rickman seems too professional for that, even if he were to be a dick (which i don't know of). btw, he once was staying at a hotel i was working at, and walking by the desk he told me he had a package arriving and to just send it to his room, assuming everyone knew who he was. when i asked "and you are?" he became visibly deflated.

If you saw kevin's special too fat for 40 i think it's called, (was on epix couple weeks ago, you can find it online), he tells a story about trying to direct willis. Kevin said he would tell him to do a take differently and bruce would just blow him off, rip pages out of the script and just did whatever he wanted during the shooting of cop out.
