I was offered a four-month temp job at a publishing company. I'm working a part-time retail job at the moment. I work 9-12 hours per week. I'd like to be able to tell the publisher I can start ASAP (like this Monday) but I don't want to burn bridges since it IS only a four-month gig.

What's the best way to handle quitting the retail job?

Talk to the part-time employer. You explained it perfectly here. If you do the same there, and you're working 9-12 hours per week, any manager with a soul is going to wish you well and tell you to come back if it doesn't work out. If they're an asshole about it, then the long term prospects with them were questionable to begin with.

Good luck.

I agree with Crash. Talk to the boss and ask him how much time he needs from you.

Everybody knows that these part-time retail jobs are temporary till you find something else. Don't sweat it and just let them know. The sooner the better. Even if they get mad at you (which is highly unlikely) there's million of these jobs and they're really hard to fill with conscientious people.

crash is right. maybe this job turns into a full time position in a filed you love so you cant turn it down. but if it doesnt and you leave pier one the right way maybe you can have a job waiting there for you when you get back?!

Good luck

The cardinal sin if you ever want to go back to that place is shorting them on shifts you are already scheduled for. It is the sure way to make everyone hate you in a coverage environment.

In your favor is that it is the slower time of year for retail, but things are going to ramp up very soon so act sooner rather than later. February is the slowest month of the year for most retail places, so trying to go back then especially when you werent available for holiday might not work out. Most places have a bigger staff during holiday and then have to lose people or cut hours after January.

Your best bet to work at the same place after the temp job is done is to stay there part time through holiday. Failing that leave on good terms, but if you apply for different retail jobs they probably will not call Pier 1 for a referance, and even so Pier 1 can only confirm when you worked there, they cant really comment on you as an employee and I dont think they can state on what terms you left. Keep in mind most places do not need to hire people until spring.

Yeah, I've had a few part-timers in the past, I'd be fine with almost zero notice.

Ok here's the deal...it sounds like you need BOTH jobs. Since the suddenly full time job is only temp. I would NOT leave the part time one. Just let them know you have a full time job now and need to change your hours to fit the full time job.

Don't EVER MAKE THE MISTAKE thinking the temp. full time job will turn into a permanent one. When that job is over you will need income. If you quit the retail one then in 4 months you will be stuck with NO job.
it sucks to have to work two job but that's what you have to do...then you do it.
