Washington (CNN) -- The U.S. Food and Drug Administration told the manufacturers of seven caffeinated alcoholic beverages Wednesday that their drinks are a "public health concern" and can't stay on the market in their current form. The move follows a year-long review by the FDA, which gave the companies 15 days to either reformulate their products or face possible seizure under federal law, said Dr. Joshua Sharfstein, the agency's principal deputy commissioner. Experts have said the caffeine used in the beverages can mask the effects of alcohol, leaving drinkers unaware of how intoxicated they are.

Isn't the FDA supposed to check these types of things BEFORE the products hit the market ?

Now THERE'S a backwards conclusion! Hah! Are you just conveniently ignoring all of the things the FDA DOES keep off the market? And it's also specifically designed to catch things after the fact since a lack of such oversight too often has lead to NOTHING being done! You're hopelessly naive if you think companies will police themselves until it's much, much too late when it comes to what the FDA covers!
And you've yet to explain how the "market" is supposed to self-regulate things when you and your ilk are always crying about excessive lawsuits and the like!!!

ah yes why not just have another sub bureaucracy in the FDA maybe call it the Dept of Energy (Drinks) hire a few thousand more paper pushers. Its all about "REFORM" right?

What a nonsensical response that, as usual, has nothing to do with what anyone said or asked of you! Where did anyone here say that the FDA needs to be expanded or a similar agency needs to be created? Please quote that right now or else I'll be forced to ask you to try and control your frantic delusions!!!

Obviously FDA dropped the ball on this. So why not create another agency? More government, more bloat is needed so the government can protect us, because people can not make informed decisions on their own.
This govrnment implements everything after the fact. They got it all ass backwards
This is specifically why regulations are in order. Companies will act negligently and allow people to die or actively put them into unsafe situations so long as it remains profitable.

"Removed?" They don't have to stop selling it; they just can't sell it as currently advertised/marketed and formulated! They can sell energy drinks...just not ones that are the equivalent of pounding back a couple of beers!

Too funny! WF thinks the buying public can make their own decisions...but he wants to cripple their ability to fight back against companies that exploit or harm their customers as well as stripping away any regulation to help the consumer as well! Brilliant!
The FDA works! For every non-"failure" like this you can point to hundreds of products that we've been protected from, and yet he views them as a wasteful use of our resources!

The logical next step would be to prohibit bars from mixing energy drinks with liquor. Once we get that done, I'm hoping that any establishment that sells alcohol will be prohibited from selling anything with caffeine or lose their license. I was furious the other day when I walked by a bar and they were serving an inebriated man coffee. They might as well have been pouring drano down his throat.

The FDA making WF and his ignorant ideology look silly again. (http://www.cnn.com/2010/HEALTH/11/19/fda.removes.drug/index.html?hpt=T1)
The pharmaceutical company that makes the prescription pain medications Darvon and Darvocet has agreed to withdraw the drugs from the U.S. market at the request of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the FDA said Friday. The FDA says the drug, propoxyphene, puts patients at risk of potentially serious or fatal heart rhythm abnormalities.

you are completely missing the point. what if they dont want to poison their body, but the company has made a product that has potentially fatal side effects. (this might be your worst post in that your argument has nothing to do with my original post.)

agreed! these drinks are no different then any other alcoholic drink, mixture or smoking etc. but because its flavored more like a kids energy drink they are going way over the top. last night on the news they did their little undercover sting. oooohhhhh lets go arrest store clerks selling this, that will teach them! watching the cops talk about it last night was comical. why not band redbull? people mix that with vodka even though it says in redbull cans not to do so? or just ban it in general because the same shit happens if you drink too much energy drinks even without alcohol?
there will always be overdoses of people who over do or abuse something. you should ban something because a few people cant handle or control themselves. we have zero personal responsibilities now a days. we fuck over 98% of people who are responsible because 2% are assholes with no control.

So should bars be forbidden to sell Red bull? Red bull vodka is a combination of stimulants and a depressant, but yet all over the country on weekends people are sloshing it down.
I would agree if someone drinks 4 cans in 1 night of four loko for example is a major health risk but then again its their choice

My post was about a prescribed medicine causing lethal arrhythmias.
You said the following in another thread:

The story I posted above about a prescribed medicine on the market causing lethal arrhythmias, which the public was made aware of by the FDA, not the company, directly contradicts your absurd statement.
Who is "the company"? The CEOs? Boardmembers? They make enough to walk away from a failed business comfortably. It's better to bail out right before or right after it all explodes and retire or move on to the next CEO position. The company can get fucked for all they care.

Even if you could point to some concrete example of this, what is your point? If the victims get compensation, isn't that what matters? You want to see executives scourged on prime time TV or something?
Bhopal disaster. Union Carbide caused the deaths of several thousand people and injured scores more because it was more profitable to run a dangerous pesticide plant than a safe one.
I want CEOs held accountable for the actions or inactions of their companies. More like Ken Lay, less like Warren Anderson.

Who exactly is "the victim"? Some college kid thats gets black out drunk from pounding these things? Hes not a victim. Hes an asshole that doesnt know how to drink. Its an alcoholic drink, it should be sold with the same exact regulations put on liquor and beer. I dont give a fuck if it has caffeine in it. That shouldnt matter. At 21 years old you should be able to decide for yourself when youve had enough to drink, and if you dont and something happens, that should be on the 21 year old, not the company that makes the product.
