Apparently she suffered from dementia and this was a tough decision for him. I totally feel for the guy. I hope he gets acquitted. (http://www.cbsnews.com/8301-504083_162-20023569-504083.html)

so random? How is that so? Here is a man who was married to the woman he loved for almost 70 years...most of us are lucky to spend 20 or 30 with someone we love. And she is gone, her mind is gone, the woman he loves is gone. And instead of seeing her shell waist away he does a mercy killing. We do it for dogs and cats and horses...but people? Heaven forbid.
And I don't say people should pay for the smallest shit they do, each case is different with each person. Did you READ the article? Doesn't sound like you did. So try that and get back to me.

I read it and Im completely down with Dr Kevorkian assisted suicide. Im not down with a man going out and getting a gun and shooting her in the head. Couldnt he have given her an overdose of something? You dont shoot someone in the head in a nursing home. There are old people there he could have given these people a heart attack just hearing the sound of a gun going off. is his wifes life and suffering worth more then the feeling of safety and security the other old people felt living there? these people might now be afraid because of what happened because they cant understand what happened.
You think it was a mercy kill only because the daughter said so in the article. she could be saying this to protect what she has left. who knows but im sorry you shoot someone in the fucking head in a public place and Im not cool with that. what if he accidentally shot someone else because hes 88 and old and frail?
and yes Tom you always want people to pay equally for the biggest crimes to the smallest most nothing situations whether they are petty crimes or someone spoke down to you. either way you dont want anyone to get away with anything and they all must pay. that is you dont try to lie and say no because it is.

WTF?? Guy couldn't find a pillow and smother her with it. He could have found other means to assist in putting her out of her misery.....like using a shovel and wacking her in the head, or get an ax and chopping her up, bashing her head with a brick, getting some rope and hang her from the ceiling, beating her up with a baseball bat, etc..... there are so many ways for a less painful death, he couldn't find one? Seriously.

I hope he gets aquitted. Look at that guy. Does he look capable of smothering someone? Or even finding anything to kill her with medically? I wouldnt trust him to even cut her throat right.
It says right in the article she couldnt feed or clothe herself. And didnt even recognize most people anymore. I feel bad for the guy. It was probably the hardest decision he ever had to make. I personally couldnt do it but I pity him for having to make such a hard decision. Ive known people with dementia, its one of the saddest most painful things to watch, especially if its someone you really love.

without having read the article, isn't a gun to the head almost instantaneous death? where's the pain, unlike getting bludgeoned to death with a bat by an octogenarian?

Sorry Anthony it's not, unless you have examples to go by.
And thanks to the courts Dr. Kevorkian or anything he did isn't allowed anymore.
Look the guy is 88, obviously he made a mistake in firing a gun in a public place THAT I will agree with. If anything he should have done it somewhere else. But smothering someone with a pillow is actually more painful. You're suffocating them, and that is a longer and more painful death.
What it boils down to, as it seem, is that this guy was upset because of the situation and didn't want to see his wife be the way she was anymore.
Sorry but can empathize with this guy. And I am sure everyone who has seen a family member go through Alzheimers or cancer and understand where this guy was at. Not saying any one of you would have pulled the trigger but you at least should UNDERSTAND where he's coming from.

He's 88 yrs old, you think his aim is steady? Supposed his missed. Not like the wife wasn't going to be moving her head around. Unless he slipped the barrel of the gun into her mouth. Here honey that another sip and BAM!!!! Dead meat. Now he could go play bingo.

Pretty much!!! I think it's terrible that this guy had to go to this length to end his wife's suffering, but he was in the wrong that he did it with so many people around who could have been hurt and traumatized!!!

What you seem to be missing is that there is a difference between morality and legality.
Chosen method aside, he may have done the right thing ethically (if we accept his word), but he still broke the law. Doing to the ethical thing is not always easy, and he'll have to live with the consequences.

No it's just that the quote was so run-on and random it could be almost any other topic in this thread. try being a LITTLE more specific. You are kind of like the 'you are here' t-shirt and the arrow points to the milky way.
Here....this is what that sounded like to me.

Once again I say his choice of WHERE to do it was not a good one, and yes firing a gun at someone is against the law, but the circumstances being what they were...what else was he to do? Give her too many sleeping pills? She was refusing food (again according to what he said).
I am not saying he did everything right, but at 88 and he is most certainly not going to last the next 5 years, I doubt any jury will give him a conviction, if they do, then very little, if any, jail time.

I mercy-killed my grandfather. He was rich, I was in the will, I needed cash to pay Mercy, Charity and Candice over at the strip-club, so it was an easy choice.
