View Full Version : You DON'T remember when stores waited until after Thanksgiving for Christmas stuff!

Every week my local paper has a feature called "Out of the Past". They reprint stories that have been in that paper 25, 50, 75, and 100 years ago. Here's one from this week.
Although a little over a month off, the stores are beginning to show signs of Christmas. Christmas buyers have been laying in presents and supplies for several days.
They no longer defer their purchases until the last minute, as was the case in years gone by, but they prepare for the event in advance to their own profit and the pleasure of the dealers and the sales people.

The "years gone by" part makes me wonder if they are remembering something that never happened, just like we do now.
This kind of reminds me of when Ron talks about people wishing for things to be like they were in "simpler times". People never seem to remember the past, the way it actually was.

Pointing out there were no such thing as the "good ol' days" may in fact be more trite than actually longing for the good ol' days.

I was watching an old James Stewart movie the other night. He worked in a shop and their biggest night of the year was Christmas Eve. Maybe if you go back far enough, that's the way people used to shop for Christmas. This movie was from the 40's probably. It struck me as odd at the time, because we've always started shopping at least by Thanksgiving, if not before.

As someone who has worked retail during Christmas many times, I know all too well that people still shop on Christmas Eve. But this is about the people who say stores didn't PROMOTE Christmas before Thanksgiving. They have obviously ALWAYS done it. I will admit however, that the retailers have started promoting Christmas before Halloween in recent years.

I don't remember rock stations playing xmas songs before Thansgiving. But this is most likely the case.

I have my morning scheduled minute-by-minute to squeeze in as many tramplings as humanly possible. I hope to add at least four more notches to my "walking stick".
It's really a murder weapon!

sears has been at it since july...
While we were surprised last week that Macy's is already hyping up Santa's impending arrival, they've got nothing on Sears, which has already gotten up full Christmas-themed displays, just in time for Labor Day.
Consumerist reader Graeme was doing some shopping at the Sears in Chestertown, MO, yesterday when he spotted this display of scarf-wearing bears (stuffed dolls; not actual bears) along with ornaments and merchandise from Disney and holiday film fave A Christmas Story. (Full pic below)
So if the summer heat has got you wishing for more wintry weather, you can always head over to Sears to get in the yuletide mindset.

Ironically, you'd think a place called "Christmas Tree Shops" would have Christmas stuff year-round, but they don't. I went in there in July just to check it out and they had nothing Christmas related.

Home Depot started putting their seasonal/Christmas stuff out at the end of August. Or maybe it was in early October. Or maybe it was last year...it was so long ago that I forgot already.
