The bill was approved by the Senate committee only last week. They seem to be jumping the gun.

Does having your tax dollars go toward this make you feel safer?

"Be afraid to link anything, unless you are Google. The poor are guilty, but Google and Bing get away with murder. Google and Bing do exactly what a torrent site does. It lists a bunch of links to copyrighted material. Every image that is in google search is copyrighted by its creator/owner. And yet, there it is... RIGHT on GOOGLES WEBSITE. It searches them all, puts them in a database so that I can find images of anything easily... That is piracy right there folks... The entire internet commits piracy EVERYDAY, even our politicians use google... they are too are guilty of piracy. The internet, and computer industry for which I am a part of... started by hackers... tinkerers... and todays internet culture stems from my generations commodore 64/Amiga scene... Every brilliant tech mind today... passed through that generation... and hold these believes... that information is free for all. That is how google started. That is how yahoo started. That is how torrents started. That is how the IBM PC became the COMPAQ PC COMPATIBLE. customs has always had an anti-bootleg mission.
it's just that now they've moved it to cyberspace. it's hard to complain about them making it difficult to get pirated software or knock-off merchandise.

it's like the cops finding your pot farm and getting pissed. you weren't supposed to be doing it in the first place.

The COICA Web Censorship Bill has only passed the Senate. Thought bills had to then get passed by Congress to be legit.

Bills can originate in either the House OR Senate. And, there are sometimes Joint Resolutions. The exception to the rule is that all bills for raising revenue must originate in the House and then be passed by the Senate. (http://thomas.loc.gov/home/lawsmade.bysec/formsofaction.html#bills)

It's no worse than needless pat-downs in airports.

I read there has been testing of check points that have failed. Using an explosive powder that won't show up any other way but scans/pat downs.

I find that using a government entity to go after file sharing is ludicrous. It's a good thing we have the likes of the EFF.

nothing wrong with the goverment shutting down illegal sites. seems odd for it to be done under homeland security.

it wasn't done by homeland security. customs (in this case ICE) is part of homeland security. prior to 2003 it was part of the treasury.

An indexing site and a site that linked to mixtapes artists themselves put up were shut down. Not exactly illegal, and there are already dmca take downs in place. Which were over ridden in both cases. And I don't think this is law yet.

This will cost tax payers $47m for the text five years.

PROTECT IP, the U.S. government’s legislation to target individuals and domains connected with allegations of copyright infringement, is set to cost millions of dollars to enforce. According to a Congressional Budget Office estimate, PROTECT IP – which is designed to benefit US-based entertainment companies – will cost the taxpayer a cool $47m between 2012 and 2016.

And as long as theres ways around it I will use them. I dont plan on ever spending another nickel for music again. Movies I dont mind buying, but if I dont see them in the theater I will download them first to see if they are worth it.
