So who do you think is the best back-up QB off all time or whenever?

I have some favorites:

Steve Grogan, Jeff Hostetler, Tom Tupa, Jim Jensen, Pat Ryan, Jeff Kemp.

hostetler took his team to a SB victory.

Also Frank Reich has to get some mention just cause that Houston game.

Michael Vick was a pretty good backup QB this year

Yeah, Frank Reich.

I never considered Vick to be a back-up QB. C'mon we all knew he would be starting sometime.

he's the fucking man. there was rarely a drop in production in the bills high production offense when he came in for kelly. that houston game holds a special place in my heart. he also lead the greatest comeback in ncaa football with maryland.

so now you can't be a great backup qb without winning a SB. thanks skeet!

and fuck jeff hostetler.

If Montana didn't get hurt, they woulda beat the Giants. The 49ers had one of the best offenses during that time. Just imagine 2 great offenses in the superbowl 49ers vs. the Bills. West Coast vs. the No Huddle. Montana vs. Kelly. the game of the century.

Koy Detmer. Total weed head, traveled in his pajamas, with just a toothbrush, when he was holding the ball you always had hope they were faking the kick. Also, looked really good for the quarter he played against the 49ers before getting knocked out for the rest of that season.

Shouldnt this be about a career back up not someone who backed up for 2 or 3 years and then became a great starter? Tom Bradys, Jeff Garcias, Matt Schaubs and Steve Youngs of the world shouldnt be included because they would win hands down.

Who is the guy who played for Tenn but got pissed and got traded to SD? He was a beast for a couple of years. RosenRosen (not his real name) Former Hou, Minn, now NYG back up! Brad Smith is pretty good because he does everything and is pretty good!

I agree with this. Almost every quarterback was a backup at one time. And the Doug Williams one is even more confusing. He was a starter earlier in his career, but came out of retirement to be a backup.

I loved Koy Detmer just for the fact tht when hed come in and throw a TD hed go right to that "spankin that ass" dance he would do. AJ Feely did pretty well one year.

I was thinking AJ Feely is a good candidate because he was third string, which must get him some extra points, he won in the regular season and the playoffs, and when he officially became a starter in Miami he stunk on ice.

Was it Vince Young who they decided to go with over him and thats what pissed him off or was it Collins? It seemed like a long time ago maybe too long to be b/c of Young?

November 28, 1988| From Associated Press

NEW ORLEANS — It wasn't Paul McFadden's best kick, but it was good enough for the New York Giants--just barely.

McFadden's 35-yard field goal with 21 seconds left Sunday night just did clear the crossbar to give the Giants a 13-12 victory over the New Orleans Saints.

The Giants (8-5) remained tied with Philadelphia for the lead in the NFC East. The Saints (9-4) lead San Francisco by a game in the NFC West.

Jeff Rutledge hit Stephen Baker on a 33-yard pass play to the New Orleans 12 to set up McFadden's kick.

The Giants, playing without starting quarterback Phil Simms, scored on an 85-yard touchdown pass play from Jeff Hostetler to Baker in the second quarter to take a 7-6 lead, but New Orleans had a 9-7 lead at halftime on Morten Andersen's third of four field goals.

Jeff Rutledge, activated off injured reserve on Friday, replaced Hostetler for the second half and directed both drives to McFadden's field goals.

Hostetler finished with 5 completions in 10 attempts for 128 yards. Rutledge completed 11 of 17 passes for 113 yards.
