He got his commercial driver's license a few weeks ago and landed a job with Werner Trucking. He was going to go to orientation in PA (they'd pay for his transportation), then go through training, and then start driving. They were even going to reimburse him for what he spent on trucking school!

When he was offered the job he asked the recruiter SEVERAL times, "I have this job so I can give notice at my current job, right?" He was told, "Yes." He even asked the recruiter on the day he was planning to give notice if he did, indeed, have a job with Werner. Again he was told yes so he gave notice.

On Monday, the recruiter called him and told him they couldn't hire him because he had his "regular" (car) drivers license for less than a year (he got it in August). He tried to explain that he has a valid international drivers license from Ecuador but that wasn't good enough. When he told the recruiter he quit his job the recruiter said, "That's your problem and not mine."

My husband was going to get laid off sometime in the next two weeks. Now he has no job and no unemployment and we're losing our health insurance. He has a better attitude about this than I do: "When a door closes, a window opens."

Thank God I'm working and I can get overtime!

well if he already knew he was getting laid off then although it sucks you only lost out on 2 weeks pay although he may have been able to collect unemployment

theres still a ton of other driving companies out there has he tried those yet ??

it'll all work out in the end

That's his attitude. He found out that this company will give you the ax after one mistake. Marco said, "It's better that this happened now instead of six months from now."

He's applying like crazy to other companies. He knows he can get a job parking trucks and doing maintenance on them. It's not what he wants to do but it will pay the bills.

Like I said, he's got a great attitude about it.

I guess I'm just pissed about this for him.

I have a temp job that will hopefully turn permanent.

that does suck but even though he quit cant he still get unemployment even if there is a waiting period for quiting?

Im guessing they didnt realize at first that he only had a drivers license for 4 months? Maybe the hiring company picked up on it after the fact or the recruiter was too stupid to know that? I dont understand why thats a problem if you have the CDL or whatever license he needs? then again how did he get a truckers license or even start the schooling without an American license?

I hope he finds something soon. It gets scary as we get older to not have insurance.

Dude!

Sorry to hear, but not to worry, almost everyplace a cdl is required is hiring. It may not be the place he wants or best deal, but there are jobs. Also, time to play the race card. You know how (or maybe you don't but it's a fact) at some places a lot of PRs, or Mexicans, or Bosnians, or Dominicans, or Serbs or Salvadorans, work there? He needs to find a place where other Ecuadorans work, maybe Hispanics in general. I'm a Jew and when I see another Jewish name I mention it. I speak Spanglish too and that has helped me get loaded/unloaded ahead of others(tho, that may have been because other drivers were rude where I was engaging). Good Luck and never give up never give in.

That's tough, something similar happened to me about 7 years ago. Some people are just idiots. Thankfully there are at least options for now.
