I replaced all the innards in a toilet tank yesterday. There were numerous problems with the old stuff, so I bought a total replacement kit (Fluidmaster 400AK). After rebuilding the tank, there was a small puddle on the floor after a few hours. With the tank still installed, I was able to see water beading up out of the spongy gasket that sits on the flush valve tailpiece, between the tank and the bowl. I removed the tank again and took a closer look at the gasket. This is not the rubber gasket that seals the inside of the tank around the flush valve (flapper valve), but the larger gasket that is on the outside bottom of the tank where it goes into the hole on the back of the bowl. The new gasket is a red, spongy, and porous. I can squeeze it and wring it out like a sponge. The old gasket was not porous, but is decaying badly so I can't reuse it.

(This is not the kit I bought, but the pink gasket is the same)

Now when water passes by this gasket during a flush, there is very little pressure. But the porous nature of this prick seems to be doomed to cause leaks through capillary action. WTF?

Ask John Charles. I hear he crushes toilets.

Any answer we give could end in a protracted expensive lawsuit.:flush:

Is the number for the company on the replacement kit? give them a call maybe they can send you a new gasket. otherwise, go to the hardware store and get a gasket like your old one.

Did you notice if they sold a kit with a thicker ttb gasket?

Any chance that the new gasket was installed upside down?

Well I took it all out. There was a lot of metallic sediment in the tank from the old parts rotting. I had cleaned it out pretty good before the initial install, but there was a few grits left. I cleaned the area where the inside gasket seats and reinstalled the bitch, and so far the floor is dry. I still don't understand how the inside gasket not seating could cause the weeping, because any water that leaks out around the tailpiece would theoretically follow gravity into the bowl. That interior gasket is just there to prevent water loss into the bowl.

I think ICP put it best, "Pure motherfuckin magic."
