View Full Version : Why the Jets Will Beat the Steelers

Trying to be objective and not a fan, I honestly feel that the Jets will walk out of Heinz Field on Sunday night with the LaMaar Hunt Trophy. Here's a few reasons why:
*THE HOT TEAM - The Jets are hot right now and on a streak of playing well, with a lot of confidence, too. Just like a hot goalie can carry an NHL team to the Stanley Cup, football is a team effort and they are playing collectively like a well-oiled machine (except for Weatherford and Folk).
*EXPERIENCE - They were in the same spot last year, so the second-year QB and head coach will not be awed by the aspect of being one win away from the Super Bowl. Sure, the Steelers are even more experienced but no advantage to the Steelers = slight advantage to the Jets. Any team that is hosting a game like this and won a ring only two years ago should have a big advantage and Pittsburgh just doesn't in this match-up.
*STEELERS OFFENSIVE LINE - The Jets sacked Brady five times against a line that only gave up 25 sacks the entire regular season, so they have the ability to put pressure on the QB. (Pittsburgh surrendered 43 sacks during the regular season.) In the Week 15 22-17 victory by the Jets at Pittsburgh, they had three sacks of Big Ben and a key late safety on a running play from scrimmage. From a personnel standpoint, the Pats have a better O-line than the Steelers and the Jets had their way with them.
*BIG PLAY JETS - The Jets can hurt you offensively in many different ways. They love to pound the ball on the ground and have two backs that can get yards and in the end zone. Then they have a quality receiving tight end in Dustin Keller and two wideouts that can change the game in one play. Add in Jerricho Cotchery (whose 52-yard catch and run was the play of the game on Sunday) and Mark Sanchez has a lot of weapons to choose from.
*INTANGIBLES - If the Steelers lost this game, it would hurt but not be the end of the world for them. They have won two titles in the past five years, so they'll manage to get over it. On the other hand, the Jets haven't even been to the Super Bowl since the 1960s and Rex Ryan has been to the last three AFC Championship games (one with the Ravens). The hungrier group gets the meat here.
And lastly, the Jets ousted two teams that have been AFC strongholds and have one left. They can hit the Triple Lindy with a 'W.'

Experience? Really? The jets were in the AFC champ game last year. WOOOOOO. They are playin the fuckin steelers. they won a SB a few years ago. The QB has 2 SBs. Half the team, at least, won that last SB. Im pretty sure the Steelers have the edge in experience, chief

oh and the intagible thing is pretty dumb too. I dont think the fact that the steelers won a SB a couple years ago will make them complacent this year. None of them will even be thinkin about how they will feel after the game to have that effect their play.

Steelers will win after Big Ben rapes Ryan with his foot.

Yeah, the steelers don't have a good defensive team or anything (for the part talking up the jets' d).

What team making the Conference Championship isn't a "hot team" in some way? And I guess we're just looking past the fact the Jets lost 3 of their last 5 games to end the season, with one of their 2 wins coming against the Bills.
Meanwhile, the Steelers came into the playoffs winners in 6 of the last 7, granted the one loss was to the Jets at home 17-22. Still, the Jets had lost recently to the Pats coming into their playoff matchup as well so remember that. It's not going to be easy to win twice in Pittsburgh this year, ask Baltimore.
So overall I think this point is neutral at best, if not in favor of Pitt. Just bc the Jets our louder, it doesn't make their wins bigger.
To me, no advantage here at all even if Jet fans like shiny things and loud noises.
"No Advantage to the Steelers = slight advantage to the Jets" ????:wacko: If any team hosting the game, IN PITT no less (great fans there), does get a huge boost and it's definitely an advantage, not sure how you looped this in some crazy advantage for the Steelers!? That whole paragraph hurts my head. To Pittsburgh, this literally is the same old Steelers and the Holmes factor should play in here as well.
Advantage easily Pittsburgh here.
Three sacks is not "having your way" with any team, it's average. Not bad, but average at best. The Jets dialed up some good schemes last week for NE, but they are HARDLY known for their pass rush and usually it's not that good to be honest. I can only imagine they'll scheme and take chances once again here, they have to. However, that creates opportunities that for some reason Brady didn't exploit until late in the game last week.
Also, HUGE credit goes to the secondary on almost every sack the Jets got last week, because they were textbook coverage sacks, not good pressure or penetration early. In all my years watching Brady play, I never saw him unable to go through his reads so often and get caught hanging on to the ball too long. The Jet secondary played awesome early and Brady simply wasn't Brady.
My final point on this topic is Ben simply doesn't go down nearly as easy as Brady. It's his MO to take big hits and get out of crazy bad situations bc teams can't get him and his huge frame on the ground. Expect a bunch of lumbering 10-20 yard runs when you thought the Jets at least would force him to throw it away, much less get a sack.
Advantage, Pittsburgh in my mind bc the Jets simply DO NOT have a good pass rush as you try to point out and Pitt's line isn't awful, much less Ben makes plenty of plays when he is under pressure.
First off, Pitt and NYJ are only separated by an average of 6 yards/game on offense. Next, both teams have 11 plays of 40+ yards passing and 1 Pitt/2 Jets on the ground. Pitt however has a big advantage in the 20+ yard category in passing with 62 Pitt/44 Jets and and edge on the ground 16 Pitt/11 Jets. I have no idea where this big play Jets thing is coming from, bc truly I don't have either in this category. Yet if I had to choose, based on these facts over a whole season and the QBs running said offenses tied to the speed of guys like Wallace who had 10 TDs in only his second year...
Yah, moderate advantage Pittsburgh.
Miller and Keller are similar, as well, no advantage either way. Even though I expect Miller to see more action and play a bigger role for Pitt..
Don't get this one either. I'd say the Byrd motivation and Rex's antics do add some intangibles here, but not Pitt's past success. If anything, these fans want more rings, just like the team. Both groups are hungry, but Byrd has added something to the Jet cause.
Slight advantage Jets. Yet it doesn't really take much to get teams fired up for Conference Championships. If it does, you're really fucked.
And lastly, the Jets ousted two teams that have been AFC strongholds and have one left. They can hit the Triple Lindy with a 'W.'
This means nothing when that ball is snapped for either team. Still as I've said as these playoffs started every team in had a shot bc there simply isn't a dominating team in the mix. The only team you knew wouldn't be able to win was Seattle, after they got on the road that is (I did pick them to cover both weeks though, good W1/bad W2). Not for one second do I think either game has a sure winner, but I'm not convinced the Jets can go in to Heinz Field twice this year and walk away doing that stupid jet plane dance.
I'll tackle each topic covered in red bc this post reads like a WFAN call without it.

There were questions about Sapp's "character" because he failed a drug test (or didn't, who the hell really knows), which is why he fell all the way to 12.

The best part is when Rozelle announces Roger Vick's name, and there's an audible "OH NOOOOO!!!" right after he says "fullback". I've run it back and listened to it over and over again at least 20 times.

oh wow, you guy are posting the Jets draft blunders videos? How cute! And not at all cliche!
Since Kyle Brady, the Jets have drafted the following players in the first round:
Keyshawn
Farrior
Ellis
Abraham
Pennington
Becht
Santana Moss
Bryan Thomas
Dewayne Robertson
Vilma
Brick
Mangold
Revis
Gholston
Keller
Sanchez
Wilson
Out of that entire list, there are two legitimate busts (Robertson and Gholston). Becht is still in the league so I don't count him as a bust. Vilma just didn't click with the Jets but he's still a valued defensive player. Same with Moss on the offensive side. Ellis, Brick, Mangold, Revis, Keller, and Sanchez are the reason where they are right now.

If you waste a pick on someone and they dont do anything for your team they are a bust! Keyshawn wasnt a bust in his NFL career but for the NYJ he was. He only stayed on the Jets for 4 years and you traded him instead of keeping him.
It only matter what they do in your team for your team. If you draft someone and cut or trade them within a few years and that player goes on to be a stud somewhere else then he was a bust!

Keyshawn was a bust with the Jets? He had two 1000+ years and almost had a third in his four years with the Jets.
His production in Tampa Bay mirrored what he did with the Jets. In fact, he scored more TDs in New York than he did in Tampa. The Jets traded him because of his character issues with the team.
Oh, and BTW - Keyshawn was traded for two first rounders - one of them was Shaun Ellis. Remind me, who had a monster game on Sunday?

Also, to continue on this tangent, the Jets did scout Vilma properly - that he had talent to play in the NFL -- but Mangini didn't like him and wanted to get rid of him. He didn't fit in Mangini's process, his system.
And he was the defensive rookie of the year in 2004.

The book came out in 1997, the trade was in 2000. It wasn't because of the book, it was because he was a locker room cancer.
And in the superbowl, Joe Jurevicius has more receiving yards than Keyshawn.

As opposed to flirting with not one but two head coach candidates while your current HC was still employed?
