...because you can't compress such a dense book into 2 hrs. I think the miniseries was pretty damn good, considering its low budget & PG restrictions. I'd like to see who gets cast for what , but I cringe to see what they'd cut out to fit a timeframe. Or, worse, populate it with near teens to bring the kids in.

I started typing a reponse to this filled with Dark Tower news, shows how much I pay attention.

From what I read here on the AVClub (http://www.avclub.com/articles/stephen-kings-the-stand-to-become-molly-ringwaldle,51155/) they're going to make it several films, LOTR-style instead of just one single movie.
So as with The Dark Tower, producers are said to be considering doing The Stand over multiple movies—which would be a huge investment, but one that would hopefully allow for tangents like Trashcan Man’s extended jaunt with The Kid, and all the anal-raping-with-a-gun scenes that are so crucial to the book’s central allegory.

I am stoked for this - but only if its not as cheesy as that fucking train wreck that ABC did.

The problem with doing multiple movies is that The Stand (go figure) is paced like a book. You cant just use the book as a blueprint with the movie. And in my opinion the payoff doesnt work in a movie form.

The miniseries did a good job staying close to the book. I remember when King was interviewed, he said he would only allow it to be made if certain things were left in it. (such as the crucifixion scene)
And the only way this could be done is if they do it ala Harry Potters last movie, in two parts. Both need to be about 2 1/2 hours long if they will hit the important points.
I wonder if they intend to do the original version or the un-edited one.

The problem is that King seems to think the quality of an adaptation is its faithfulness. That's why he's never liked Kubrick's version of The Shining, which is radically different from the book. So he made his own version in a TV miniseries, which was much more faithful, and it was a piece of shit.
A movie/TV adaptation of a book should not be a one-to-one translation of the book to the screen.

I wanted to vomit at the end of the Shining miniseries. A story where a father goes crazy and tries to murder his family shouldn't have a touching ending.

personally...i didn't think the ABC version was all that bad. Considering the year and technology we had when it was made.
