they've got the sound. they've got the clothes. they've got the hair. they've got the attitude. and the hype. like everyone else, i went out and got the album as soon as it came out, and THE STROKES ARE DAMN GOOD.
that said, do they really live up to everything they were supposed to be? they were probably the biggest thing going before the album ever even dropped. spin magazine called them the best band to come out of NYC in the past 25 years. granted, they can rock, and they do have a different sound from most of the music out there today. but how good are they? do you people think they are really as good as all their hype?

God, I'm old. Who are the Strokes? All I can think about is that Billy Squier song.

Who are the Strokes?
rock band from nyc. huge in england. biggest buzz of any band that i can remember ever... and this was all before the album came out.
the first single "last nite" is getting a decent amount of radio play (and i'd assume the video, as well, although i don't have cable). they were the musical guest on snl a few weeks ago. they also were on conan obrien a couple of weeks back.
please someone else know what i'm talking about... i'm starting to think i made them up

The Strokes are very reminiscent of the Ramones in their minimalist approach to music, and I love them for it. The song "Last Nite" kicks ass, the album kicks ass, and I hope these guys are around for a long time to come.
Oh, and Arienette? You DID make them up, but I still like them anyway.

I LOVE the Strokes Arienette! Their CD is really great. I just wish it was a little longer. I went and saw them at The Stone Pony last month. It was a great show. That place is so small. They just walked around before and after the show.
Although I hear the similarities between them and the Ramones, I still think that they have a pretty original sound. As far as living up to the hype?? I'm not so sure, that's a LOT of hype to live up to. Since they sound so different, compared to everything else out there today, I think all of the reviewers have latched onto them. They're the hot new group, the "it" band, whatever you want to call them.
Great CD though! Go out and get it if you don't have it yet.

God how I hate this band.
Sure, if my daddy was the head of Elite modeling agency my band would be popular too. It's fake, soulless bullshit made for image and hype. An insult to bands that work their fucking ass off touring in a Ford Econoline, eating 7-11 food and hoping to crash on someone's floor later after the gig. I've seen so many bands that are so much better than The Strokes, with talent, emotion, soul, personality, and charisma, that this fucking band makes me want to vomit. But that's what record companies want. It sells.
A friend of mine's band recently was about to be signed to Atlantic Records, but the record company told them they had to fire their drummer because he's too chubby. Forget the fact that he's an amazing drummer, has a great voice for back up and lead vocals, and the fact that he was a founding member of the band. He doesn't "look good". UGH! It truly makes me ill.
It just shows further proof that major record labels don't care that music can sell itself, because they want people to buy albums because the band members look pretty on a magazine ad or an album cover or in a video.
The Strokes are coming off like they're the best thing to come out of NY since The Ramones or The Velvet Underground. But they're a bunch of privileged kids with money that had everything handed to them. Completely come off like they're too cool for the room, and will be more known for where they appear at and what insecure actress they're banging this month. Not to say those aren't fun things, but don't equate that with musical talent. I'm curious to know if they really even wrote those songs (which aren't very good in my opinion anyway) themselves.
Rich kids with daddy's with connections, and 50 bucks to outfit a band from a thrift shop on Canal St. does not make you and edgy NY band.
spin magazine called them the best band to come out of NYC in the past 25 years
This is from the same people that made that top 50 list recently people. Remember that.

of course those things don't equal talent, but do they preclude that possibility? now, i'm not saying that they don't have an obscene number of connections and the like, but they can still be talented regardless of their background or how charmed they might be... i mean, i can definitely appreciate a band that has to work really hard and never hit it that big. but i also like the strokes, regardless of where they come from

That song they have out now is really good but I wasnt crazy about the video which was by Roman Coppolla- Francis Ford's Son. You would think he could come up with something a little better or maybe just a lil more interesting. I get bored and turn it off.

THE STROKES SUCK
for the longest time theire rich daddies would buy all the tickets to there shows so it looked like they werre selling them out, and music critics would take notice to them. they also had them tour in europe so theyd build a name out there so people in the us would notice. there fame was orchestrated and bought. i saw them before and they SUCKED live and were completly unentertaining

I've only heard the song "Last Nite" and seen the video and I can honestly say that both are equally boring. The music has no substance, it's just 5 seconds of song (which is good for about 20) that goes on for a few minutes.

They're good, I have to say.
But best band from NY (or elsewhere) in the past 25 years? That's a load of crap.

When I was in Germany, The Strokes were HUGE. So, I have to conclude they suck because Hanson was still getting regular airplay there and Germans seem to only like crappy american music.
No really, I did their songs. That's all I care about. I don't care if they were Tommy Matolla's kids, the album is good.
I wasnt crazy about the video which was by Roman Coppolla- Francis Ford's Son. You would think he could come up with something a little better As evidenced by Sofia Coppola's directing, Francis Ford didn't spend much time teaching his kids. I wasn't suprised to see that Roman was simply trying to be "too-cool-for-the-room" instead of good.

looks bad for all us female

would have looked like if she
did this by herself. but
