Just a question for our lawyer friends here....Long story short, we discovered that we had some property stolen from our family 2 weeks ago and while we were looking around, noticed that there were tire tracks leading out of the area. As fresh as they were, we followed them up a hill toward our neighbors house to see that they led directly behind a truck that was sitting in his (the neighbors) backyard. We did not enter his yard, but you could see the area where the grass was laid down due to the truck running over it...but you could clearly see where they led to. So, we called the cops to report stolen property and believed that we know who did it. All the police stuff went on...statements were taken from the neighbors and my Uncle (owner of the property stolen) while my Dad and I stood back on our lands watching and all is done from that point. While my Uncle and the neighbors were up around the truck, my Uncle seen some insulation in the back of the truck and brought it to the cops attention. He noticed that it look exactly like some that was on the ground where the property was stolen. So he walked down to where the stuff was stolen and grabbed some, matched it up and even the cop admitted that it looked like a perfect match...so he took evidence.

Fast forward to last Monday, we read the statement from the 19 year old son and father. It contained lies such as we "entered their property, looked into their windows, tried to break into the backdoor, threw rock at their dogs in their kennel, and we PLANTED that insulation in the back of his truck." The 19 year old son claims he seen us all, My Uncle, My Dad and I, do this in the span of 15 minutes and was scared to confront us. He did not list us by name on the statement, cause he doesn't know our names, but he describes us to a T. My question is this, such claims of tampering/planting with evidence, animal cruelty and trespassing with an intent to break into his house are pretty big accusations. His Dad backs up all his claims on his statement as well. Do I have any grounds to sue him and his Dad for blatant lies?

Before I get bashed with "Oh your one of those....", I'm not one of those....but to be accused of abusing an animal is appalling to me.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Every state is different but before you get lawyers involved you might wanna try toilet papering their outhouse, tipping over their cows or making crop circles in the 19 year old's weed field..You know, send a message..
Plus, we are talking about the south, you may find out you're all related by the time this is over..

With my legal training, I believe you may have a good chance of settling this whole thing in Georgia Arbitration Court style - by dueling banjos.

Well that situation really sucks. I have no legal expertise, but I'd at least look into it and discuss it with the authorities too. I'm sure they see this shit all the time (those actually in the wrong trying to put it on those violated).

Good luck Scott.

How would you monetarily quantify the damages you sustained from the alleged lies?

How would you prove to the civil court that the statements were lies?
