So my company is sending me to India this Friday and I'm really excited. I work for a huge company, and a lot of management is going on this trip with me. It's a fantastic opportunity, but my main thought is my fear of flying. My doctor gave me some Xanax, and I hope that helps, but my anticipation leading to Friday is really starting to get to me.

Anyone have any suggestions?

Take an ambien the second you get on the flight plane.

yea, i'd probably stay away from that unless you know exactly how you respond when you take ambien. actually....you should probably take that Xanax before you have your flight so you know how to respond to it as well.

If you're flying Business Class, avail yourself of the free drinks.

Thanks guys, have my xanax script already, going to take it tonight. I'm not a big pill-popper and usually respond poorly to them (the vaccines nearly killed me). I'm flying business class, but if I take the Xanax I don't think I should drink. I'm also going to be taking Malarone.

Nope. Malarone starts Thursday.

You guys are really nice. I feel like a total fool having this fear, I know it's so illogical.

dude, we listen to ron and fez everyday......We're all well aware of the true meaning of "illogical fear" and i don't think fear of flying falls into that category. If you got a Xanax prescription cause you're terrified of sliding glass doors or butter knives, we'd call you a pussy and tell you to go on Maury Povich.....but fear of flying is pretty understandable.

Statistically speaking, most major airline disasters happen during the take-off process or landing process. If you're on a major airline, you're fine once the fasten seatbelt light goes off after takeoff.

If it doesn't go well with the Xanax, take A.J.'s advice and get free drinks. That's what I do when I've got a long flight and I want to be able to sleep.

I had similar anxiety about flying last year but I tricked my mind to help with the problem.
I realized that my fear was not being in control and once I accepted that - I had an easier time.

also, drugs helped too

Dude!

you just need to replace
your bad thoughts
with good thoughts

intead of thinking of
a terrorist slitting the
throat of the shapely
young stewardess...
think of a box full of kittens

instead of hearing
in your mind
the grandma in the seat
next to you screaming
"we're all going to die"...
just imagine a field of daisies

instead of picturing the
charred bodies in the
burning wreckage...
think of a plate full of cookies

this kind of positive thinking
can really help

Edit...applies to lots of other situations too.

How about;

Erica Jong walks into a bar.
The bartender says, "Why the long face?".
Erica Jong says, "I have horse cancer.".

So, tomorrow is the big day. Last night I took Xanax for the first time in my life. My wife said I slept like a baby, and a few times I mumbled some things. I'm really trying to just overcome this fear. I keep telling myself I'm going to be on an Airbus A340-300, which has an amazing safety record. I have moments of fear, then moments of confidence. I'll be fine, I just wish I wasn't afraid.

Good luck dude, take a xanax about an hour before the flight and you'll be fine. You don't want to overdo the Xanax or booze because you'll be zonked for your trip and while you'll have made it through the plane ride you'll miss the destination.

I haven't read all the comments on here, but part of my advice is ... once the plane takes off you have no control and as a wise man once said to me life is easy when you have no choices. Simply put the hard part is getting on after that all the decisions have already been made.

From a practical stand point. Watch the flight crew. They do this everyday and are experts at when to be nervous. It's really hard to be shitting your pants when some 100lb woman is laughing serving cokes.

...and if I can offer some personal advice. Don't talk about it too much between now and then. With the xanax you'll find it's absolutely no big deal and you don't want to feel like a giant pussy when the plane lands where and when it's supposed to.

LOL@jeff.

Thanks for the kind words everyone! India is really amazing. My company hooked us up with a 5 star hotel in Hyderabad. It's really amazing here, it's basically slums right next to gigantic buildings that represent the largest companies in the world. When I look out my hotel room window all I see are construction sites. I'm going to rest up a bit and try to get over jet lag, then go to the pool and maybe get a massage. Today is rest day, then 4 days of non-stop meetings then 2 days of rest. Pretty exciting.

Thanks again everyone.

Lol, I've never really travelled alone to another country like this. It's amazing how lonely you feel. It kind of gives me a different perspective on what it must be like to be an immigrant in our country. Fortunately, I have ron and fez to keep me company :D

You can use boric acid to wash the smell of curry out of your hair but you're gonna have to burn all your clothes, footwear and luggage..I'd recommend an excelerant with a high flash point cuz curry's hard to kill..

Lol, I'm pretty sure it's not like Canada! I'm currently in Belgium. I fly back tomorrow at 5:30pm German time. To be honest, I'm kind of over my fear. I'm still a little afraid, but I think it just takes some getting used to. The plane is soooo safe. I felt in much more danger driving on the autobahn with my friend who occassionally suffers from bouts of double vision.
