I don't think it's "beginner level music fan stuff" although that description certainly does add some of that precious elitism. They are playing a specific genre of music; anyone who doesn't listen to this genre of music will find this stuff new. My complaint is that to support the statement that "rock and roll isn't dead", they've played only commercial music from one genre of pop.

Other than the band they signed they claimed sounded like nothing they've ever heard before (but actually sounded like Surfer Blood), it was pretty beginner level music fan stuff. I guess it's a revelation if all you do is listen to Kings of Leon or Nickelback, though.

I think he listens to quite a few different things, but I can't imagine him aloofly rocking out to the Williamsburg Sound. My point is that if they are going to say rock and roll isn't dead, they may want to play some new rock music. I think pop music and rock music are two entirely different things nowadays. And this stuff today is very pop.
