Hate the Big cable monsters? Theres BBC, Al Jazeera English and other outlets. Most of the funding comes from donations and CPB. Those organizations can reach out to other corporations for funding/donations.

I know better than to even start this conversation, but you do realize it's a somewhat self defeating argument when you say we dont need government funded American broadcasting and then offer government funded British broadcasting as a viable alternative?
I think the difference between NPR and those international forces is that each town has thier own NPR station, which can then broadcast things specific to that town.

Do taxpayers have a liability to fund any type of medium? NPR top brass admitted they have a progressive bias.
Hypothetically speaking if NPR and PBS were to cease to exist, Im sure all the other networks would pick up some programing IE sesame street. The merchandise alone would bring in tons of revenue
Enough with the categorizing of people who dont support taxpayer funding of NPR/PBS as some backwoods, meth taking, NASCAR types. Not every progressive is a latte sipping, Art Gallery NYC/Boston/Beltway millionaire.

People who accuse the CONTENT of NPR as bias are simply not paying attention or retarded, especially if with the same breah they consider FOXNEWS as "fair and balanced"
There is not the backlash against NPR that you'd probably like to believe there is in this country, and with the risks of media companies promoting their self-interests in the information that this country uses to make decisions becoming more and more of a problem every day, an outlet like NPR is deemed necessary by many.
It is not about whether it leans right or left, it's about it being an alternative voice to corporate media.
Did you know that in a lot of countries advertising on television geared towards children is prohibited? Do you know why that would be?

I have no opposition to non corporate media. I don't believe it should be directly subsidized by taxpayers. Hell, if a new media outlet had NPR style programming and opinion shows by people only like Chomsky and Vidal, fine let them have it. However taxpayers shouldnt have a liability to fund such operations.
As far as foreign countries and advertising to children, maybe its because they believe that hokey cartoon characters shouldnt be promoting fast food or that buying a product will get them a trinket or toy. Sovereign nations can regulate their media how they want.
We do have an example of non corporate privately funded media its Free Speech TV, While it leans left, it's not getting subsidies.

Oh sure, NPR style programming would just flourish huge under the guise they had to accept advertising. So many advertisers would be fighting for that air time!!

Sure it can. Companies promoting a green agenda, organic foods, electric or hybrid cars can advertise there.
Does FSTV need to be based in Washington ? There is a good arguement that its only available on FIOS/Cable etc. They could also start a radio division for FS

I listen to the replays.
As far as the radio industry, are you talking about Clear channel gobbling up radio stations ? I understand that they own a lot of stations, there arent that many independently owned stations. People have a choice to listen to commercial radio, satellite or if FS decided to go into radio.
For TV If democrats, progressives, left leaning people turn to FSTV more and MSNBC cant compete, whats wrong with that ? If Comcast believes it isnt worth having they arent going to throw money away just to keep it on the air, they can yank the cord.

The whole reason NPR exists is for a selected audience who want to learn. They would never succeed as a station that needed advertising because big named clients would never pay big bucks to reach such a small audience.
You know why MTV stopped airing videos over a decade ago? No one watches them. No one would pay for that air time. So they had to change.
NPR would have to do the same. They'd end up like a morning zoo shitshow.
And you're not fooling anyone for a second that you actually feel this nice little idea of yours would work - it doesn't fit your views.

I don't care if it doesn't fit my views, I know what they are. I'll say it again, If a media outlet wanted to have nothing but left wing, progressive shows and news shows with an opinion that leans left, who am I to say that they shouldn't exist.
Keith Olbermann is going to current TV. If he brings over a ton of viewers and takes O'Donnells views including the ever important demo, then good for him. Just because I have a different political view doesn't mean that an outlet like that doesn't have a right to compete for viewers/listeners
I don't believe in having people tossed off the air. Mike Malloy says some hideous things, The 1st ammend allows some offensive speech to a point however when Limbaugh or Beck say Obama's a socialist or something like that there are calls for their firing. Look what happened to Imus

I'm sorry if I'm not following correctly, but why do you keep making this point? This has absolutely nothing to do with what we're talking about, and no one has shown any inclination of agreeing or disagreeing with it. Our point is that NPR is useful as an education tool and alternative to a corporate media that is insanely bias and spews out misinformation. No one is saying get rid of corporate media, I think we're just pointing out that NPR serves a useful purpose to the taxpayer.

Again, this is not about left vs. right. You are missing the point completely. Having extreme versions of news on the left or right does not inform the public. NPR is crucial to those seeking non-biased information and real news about the world today. It makes our population smarter.

Im not arguing with you about the big media outlets. Each network has their own bias. However if theres someone reporting hard news without a panel or 2 people with opposing views, theres no spin its just reporting the news. Cable news has become somewhat of a quasi beauty pageant with women showing a lot of leg with Murdoch / Ailes leading the way
News from the big guys doesn't automatically mean that someone is dumber. A rational person believes that Lindsey Lohan getting probation is not breaking news. The Barry Bonds trial whenever it happens shouldnt be an all day affair. Thats why there are sports reporting segments
I am for NPR being able to broadcast what they feel the public wants, However it shouldnt be subsidized by the taxpayers directly thats my only objection.

In regards to funding NPR gets most of its funding from CPB. I think only 2% comes directly from taxpayer funding. So if 98% comes from other sources, I dont think NPR will go belly up

He does not raise a good point. He raised an innane point that was probably a joke. So, because 1 hour of programming a week is dedicated to a car show, NPR is useless to someone in Manhattan? Again, the purpose of NPR is so that in our democracy, we can have a free news outlet that isn't overly influenced by corporations. There is a huge difference between that, and a radio channel dedicated solely to fishing.

I never said that NPR as a whole is useless. Im on board with having non corporate media outlets. I agree a lot of our news is dumbed down, Celebrities coked up is not major news, thats why there TMZ and ET. Some of the shows on PBS for example like Nova are excellent, However stripping 2% away from funding isn't going to bring the entire operation down.
