Chavez has actually done an excellent job increasing literacy, health care in Venezuela's poor population. Western media propaganda likes to portray him as a madman so we dismiss his reasonable policies toward the underclass.

So did Castro. But they're both still assholes.

Chavez is definitely an asshole, has tons of flaws. I just don't see it as useful or even accurate when tabloids or the population in general treats a petty dictator as a madman.

When I did North Korea analysis at DIA, there was a split between those who treated Kim Jong Il as a rabid dog who acted insanely with no rhyme or reason. Those of us on the other side argued that, no matter how vile you think his policies are, there is a reasoning to his actions.

I just think it looks stupid when I see the Post's headlines saying "Madman Gaddafi" or "Lunatic Chavez".

Chavez, Castro and other dictators are not stupid individuals. Theres' a method behind their madness and policies. While all being pompous, self serving and many thinking as themselves as godlike, They dont stay in power for decades with just pure luck.

Look at a lot of the Roman emperors, powerful men but a lot had major mental problems

Benefits of being an oil welfare state Oddly enough right after he nationalized the oil companies the government's revenue doubled.

Crazy or not, it's a small world and it may have just gotten a little smaller...

Chavez may be a player in the Libyan conflict:

Your first post was correct. He's clearly elevated the poor in Venezuela in a way none of his predecessors ever have. On the other hand, he's demonstrated paranoia towards almost everything Western within his borders and he's willing to use his powers to restrict free speech in a way that has gone beyond merely shutting down wealthy media tycoons of European descent.

And I don't doubt that there's a reason behind his actions. But just because there's a legitimate scientific debate over the fluoridation of water doesn't mean General Jack D. Ripper was mentally sound.

What is the point of increasing literacy in the population when you also control what they read? Chavez is a piece of shit dictator and I hope he's shaking seeing what's happening to his kind around the world.

Chavez had a real opportunity to be a rational world voice against the Bush Administration circa the Iraqi war, instead he turned into a power hungry madman who forcefully shutdown any non-government run news in his country.

Chavez has a country full of needy dependent people. His price controls are nothing to be proud of. Almost everyone is equally miserable

The literacy rate is high but can they comprehend that they are getting fucked ?

I think it'd be very naive to consider Venezuala a "socialist" country.

I think it'd be very naive to consider Venezuala a "socialist" country.

The line spills out of the concrete-block Super Mercal in Barinas, capital of a beef-producing region in the home state of President Hugo Chavez. The avowed socialist is trying to redistribute the country's wealth, blunt U.S. influence and rid capitalism of what he calls its ``anti-values.'' Socialism is Christ; capitalism is Judas, Chavez says.
He nationalizes anything that makes any money in that country, what would you call it?

the ruling party is the united socialist party and is an ally of their communist party. chavez points to capitalism as a source of evil. i think it's fair to call them socialist.
