Jane's Addiction is my favorite, followed by Nirvana, and the chick who sang "I Kissed a Girl." Just 'cause.

Nirvana is the band of the '90s by far, they were truly something special...Pearl Jam is going to have the longest career out of any of the bands of this era simply because they keep putting out good material, regardless of how it might place on the charts...Alice In Chains before they turned up Jerry Cantrell's mic too much <read: self titled album>...Garbage just blows me away...
BTW-Jane's Addiction is an '80s band, regardless of how many times they reform with Chili Peppers to stomp on the memory of what they were all about in the first place.
Also, I love Portishead, it's a shame they only put out 2 studio albums in a decade.
It's not funny, my ass is on fire...

Umm U2 isn't a 90's band Funkman....they've been around since the mid to late 70's. Their early stuff was awesome. Most of the 90's stuff was great too but they got too commercial around 93-97. Zootopa and Pop were awful, IMO. Their new stuff is the best since the early 80's. They're back to doing what they do best. Definitley not a 90's band thugh dear.

I dont know about "best" but. the most INFLUENTIAL bands of the 90ies has to be:
PEARL JAM. Eddie Vedder has ruined/redefined rock singing forever. There seems to be no end to the Vedder-wannabe's. Once that guy opened his mouth, the letter "R" has never been the same.
ALANIS- every pop producer on Earth is STILL using Jagged Little Pill as the blueprint. The loops... the auto-tuned vocals...those shitty solid-state guitar sounds...loud vox with no reverb... etc etc. It changed the radio landscape forever.

Nirvana...yeah they were influential. But the BEST band of the ninties? Not by a long shot, they had talent, it wasn't anything spectacular, they just influenced a shitload of other things and it wasn't without help of other bands at the time as well.
As for best bands I'd have to go with:
Foo Fighters
Incubus
The Presidents of the United States of America

pearl jam was good for the first 3 albums
I have to tip my hat though to Pearl Jam (1st two albums though)
I'd say Pearl Jam was good for just that first album (TEN) but they did have some great songs afterward, but nothing can touch that first one!
STP: same thing, first album rocked, then they sucked (but did have a few good songs outside of CORE)
Nirvana
Foo Fighters
Radiohead
Soundgarden
Tool and NIN are good, but I had to be in a certain mood to really enjoin them, The ones listed above put me into the tight mood.
I think you can only include bands that started in the 90s (maybe formed in the late 80's and began to make a name for themselves in the 90s) or else you can start to include bands like The Rolling Stones, Beatles and Aerosmith (I think the Beatles actually did release some new stuff in 1995/6 with their Anthology series, when they dug up some Lennon tapes and put out "Free As A Bird" and "Real Love" But I don't think anyone would call them a 90s band!)

Wow, really? I think that first album is horrible, with like 2 or 3 great songs, and that's it. The second album is only slightly better...and it was their third album, where they decided to sound more like Redd Kross, as opposed to just glammier versions of Alice In Chains/Pearl Jam, that they finally became a "good band." "Tiny Music..." is a great fucking album, easily their best.
I hate Velvet Revolver at this point because that first single just sounds like a weak B-side from early STP. Ech.

You know what? I didn't even get that far with STP. I thought after the first album they changed a bit (to sound less like Nirvana/Pearl Jam or whoever they thought they sounded to close to) and wasn't as "rock and roll" as that first album. Tiny music may be their best, I don't know what it sounds like.
Velvet Revolver: I have no idea what they sound like. I don't listen to music much any more, but I loved GnR and STP so I would think I'd like it.

The STP vs. Alice in Chains argument could last for days, but I would like to throw Neurotic Outsiders in there as well. (The band with Steve Jones of the Pistols, Duff and Matt from GnR, and John Taylor from Duran Duran.)
The band itself lasted about 11 minutes, and they really weren't a "supergroup" as they were labeled, but they were pretty cool nonetheless. Fun rock show.
P.S. I STILL hate Pearl Jam. "Jeremy" can suck a duck. Whiny lil pussy.

I'm going to stick with the general consensus and go with PJ. At the same time, it is doubtful most of us would know who they were if Nirvana didn't blow the door open. I'll also throw out there:
Smashing Pumpkins, STP, Soundgarden, Alice In Chains, Sublime, Rage Against the Machine, and though they started in the 80s much of their ass kicking came about in the 90s:
U2, Metallica, Chili Peppers
