It's some weird thing they do upstate ny (at least oneonta - maybe other places as well). It's hot pizza with cold cheese put on top after it comes out of the oven. Every pizzeria up there does it.

Those kinds of laws pass first in NYC and California. When the rest of the country sees how they eventually become accepted, then the laws spread.

BTW... I don't know if this has been pointed out in this thread, but NYC wasn't the first to try to get the soda ban. I think the first was either DC or Maryland, but it never passed.

Good God, he outlawed jackhammers at night!

In 2005, he signed a law — “Operation Silent Night” — overhauling the noise code. It cracked down on jolting jackhammer sounds at construction sites and on music blaring out of clubs, helping “make New York quieter and more liveable.”

Yes. You'd be surprised how many foods that sound healthy are WAY worse than overtly bad foods like Big Macs. Information is never the enemy.

Also, Big Macs aren't that bad (calorie-wise); at 550 calories they have the same as a 5 guys little cheeseburger.

I was absolutely floored when I saw the calorie counts on certain sandwiches at Panera. You feel like what you're eating is slightly healthy for you (or at least not awful), and then you see the actual caloric count laid out and you're shocked.

Obviously most things are no brainers, but a lot of stuff that comes across as healthy isn't.

I've never eaten there, but I'd imagine a lot of their calories are from the bread. And too much emphasis is placed on just calorie count. It's very easy to choose something that has fewer calories than something else, and end up with something that is much worse overall. One of the most important things to look at in regards to calories is that "calories from fat" line that is on product labels. Does anyone know if they offer that number in restaurants?

The hiding smokes thing is a silly concept. But I have no problem with banning the direct sale of energy drinks to kids. It's not even as restrictive as the laws for cigs, and alcohol, that I joked about. Kids can still drink them. They just wouldn't be able to buy them themselves.

I'm almost 100% against laws that restrict what products an adult can consume. But children aren't capable of understanding what is and isn't healthy for their bodies. If you're outraged about the government trying to be "nannies" to adults, I totally understand. But children DO need "nannies" for some things.

The descent will be slow in the beginning but will be noticeable after a couple of years. Wait until the union contracts come up and the first one gets an increase. Then they'll all want the same plus more. Then the strikes will start.

They can tax "the wealthy" all they want (well, the ones who stay) but it won't pay for the universal pre-kindergarten (or whatever they're calling it), much less all the other promised spending. Let the good times roll.

Damnit. I was in the city a week ago and I noticed it had lost some of it's charm.

DeBlasio's tax increases will amount to about $950 for anyone making 500k-1mm

When he's not able to collect from those wage earners its everyone else who will be hit per the norm.

Many Wall St high level execs base salary is less than 500K. Also many of the pro athletes have accountants to find loopholes for NYC taxes. Admin asst's, EMT workers and other sub 6 figure workers will end up paying for universal pre K.

DeBlasio won't be marching in the parade today since the organizers won't let openly gays march with their banners.

I'm for gay rights, marriage etc however, what if a traditional marriage group wants to march in the pride parade in June with a banner and they are turned away? Will DeBlasio boycott then?

If these parades are privately organized then they have a right to not allow to set their rules. Now if a group wants to have a banner on the sidewalk and not on the direct route I am fine with that.

The Mayor threw out the opening pitch for the Mets yesterday. Below is an article about how the crowd booed him (politicians have to expect that).

http://nypost.com/2014/03/31/mets-fans-fight-brutal-weather-for-opening-day/

But what amused me was this quote:

De Blasio wore No. 6 in honor of late-1960s Boston Red Sox great Rico Petrocelli, the mayor’s aides said.

He couldn't pick a former Met, or even someone from the National League. He picks someone from the Boston Red Sox. Really? No one thought that through?
