Are we sure the Nicolson character was based on Bulger ?

Wasn't it a novel before a movie ?

I mean there are a lot of similarities but some things are not spot on ( although that could be artistic license ).

Bulger's " protector " was actually an FBI agent and it was the Mass State Police that were instrumental in blowing up the whole thing.

Law & Order actually did a closer story with Noonan from Caddyshack playing the Bulger-like part.

Good book about the whole thing is called " Black Mass " written in like 2003 I think.
