I'm sure we're going to get lots of people who try to put her among the great singers of all time, but I just don't see that at all. She had some pretty good singles, and she could sing, but she wasn't really anything that special. Certainly not on the Aretha Franklin/Diana Ross/Tina Turner plane.

I wonder how much better she could have been if she'd decided she'd rather work on her music and her style than just be fucked up all the time.

I kind of think of Adele as the focused, sober, talented Amy Winehouse. Similar sound to me.

In a year, no one will remember she existed.

The culture has become so fickle and transitory that I don't think there is a single person who rose to fame in the last decade who could leave a legacy like the kind we attribute to Joplin or Morrison.

After seeing that video a few weeks ago of her TRYING to sing and perform and doing an epic fail, it was obvious that she was drunk, stoned or both. So with this news I am not shocked at all.

She had DEAD BEFORE 30 written all over her.

Her last concert was about a month ago in Belgrade, and she was totally fucked up. A sample:

Its a sad story when someone this young dies but lets not make her out to be Michael Jackson or any other great talent. She had a couple albums but is mainly known for 1 song. If it weren't for her drug problems she might be considered a 1 hit wonder and been out of the public years ago.

The thing that made me laugh in the article I read and then it was also mentioned on tv was they said she was known for her beehive hair, cat eyes and her "girly tattoos". Aint nothing girly about that many and the randomness of those tattoos.

Is Lohan next? Maybe she will wise up?!

Disagree. Jack White or Eminem dies tomorrow, people are talking about it like Joplin/Morrison 35 years from now. There was a ton of dogshit acts back then that could have dropped dead and people in 2011 wouldn't have given a shit too.

It's an interesting thought and not without merit. Surely Winehouse won't leave anything close to their legacy, and the last person that comes to mind who could is Cobain. Perhaps a Lady Gaga or 50 cent or Eminem like foody stated?

I agree with Stan regarding Amy Winehouse, in a year no one will remember her. I think Lady Gaga and 50 cent probably won't be remembered in 30 years either, as their music is vapid commerical garbage and their popularity was mostly manufactured.

so what artist today will be remembered in 30 years in your opinion because Lady Gaga might be the biggest female artist of all time when its said and done. She is def this generations Madonna at the very least and she has the same fan fair that Michael Jackson had at his height of his fame in the 80s. Shes a global artist we haven't seen in 20 years since Michael Jackson!

Im not saying she is better or more talented or even as talented as MJ but her world wide popularity is almost as big and crazy as his was! She sells music during a time when no one is buying it or can get for free but people still pay for hers! Like it or not thats something!

She is a carbon copy of Madonna and she has only been around for a few years. Her music is not innovative and she is totally replacable. She's 100% pure image with no substance. She's a post-modern hero that can be easily replaced with the next cookie cutter pop-star. If she died tomorrow it would be the biggest story in the last 30 years in this country, besides 9/11, but her music would not hold up and she would just be forgotten, besides as a story.

The difference between Lady Gaga/Hendrix or Morrison is that 30 years later people still like their music. Is someone in the year 2040 going to listen to Poker Face or Born This Way and be inspired?

Yes and Morrison is only remembered because he died young. His music has never been discussed as anything great or. He wasnt ground breaking he sang depressing drugged induced music and had more success after his death then while he was alive! 30 Years later I dont like Morrisons music and never did. It all depends on taste and I know more people who dont like Morrison then do!

You can say what you said about any popular artist of their time that it is all image and hype. But at the end of the day its just not what you like but the younger generation feels differently about her and she will be talked about in their circles forever. Shes not a 1 hit wonder she is the best selling artist out there. She is creating and then breaking online sales like no artist has and still selling while others arent. That alone will make her an icon forever because every time a artist does something big it will be compared to hers. She has worldwide appeal and success that few have ever had thats not a small thing.

Im not saying she is the greatest artist ever but she has more talent then most artist the last 50 years. Shes not some manufactured only artist she has talent she went to a prestiges school for her talents. She isnt some digitally mastered no talent hack like Madonna. She is a legit artist who is classically trained. Just because she makes music you dont like doesnt mean she isnt talented.

I'm almost shocked to see how much love & cred is being heaped on Winehouse. She was a novelty act AND a one hit wonder..... 6 years ago.
Her voice was throaty and cool. No argument there. But her persona, her vibe, and her image was contrived as all hell. Her one hit song was practically a parody... made even more of a parody by having a remixed version featuring 16 bars of Jay Z rapping on it to ensure maximum kitsch factor AND top 40 playability.

I'm not doing the whole "fuck her!" thing. I'm not making any comment on her lifestyle or her addictions. Do drugs. Nobody gives a shit about that (including her.)

Record sales and artist talent are not really cohesive.

I don't know what kinds of talents she has beyond the music she makes, Page Hamilton was a classically trained guitarist that played in a heavy metal band. It is definitely my opinion, but her music is the definition of post-modern. It's unidentifyable and nearly a parody of music before it. I may not have an ear for that type of music, but how on earth does it stand out from anything else? Her popularity is in her marketability as an individual, not a musician. She is our generation's Madonna, dreamed up in the board room of some record label and pitched to MTV. She may as well be a robot.

Lady Gaga is not a 1 hit wonder, but how many hits does she have? I honestly can name 2 Lady Gaga songs: Poker Face and Born This Way.

I can name 8 or 9 top 10 hits in america alone, she is even bigger over seas then she is here and has had other singles released and charted that werent released in the usa.

I agree with you about Madonna and have thought that for years. Madonnas biggest talent is she always reinvented her style making her always relevant to the masses worldwide, she also had sex appeal ( i never thought she was hot), a little craziness and could dance but she never had a good voice nor could she play instruments or write music. Gaga is similar with her marketing and a lot of other things to Madonna but the difference is she has talent, she plays multiple instruments, has a very good voice that would sound good singing any type of music, she writes a lot of her own songs and produces them too. I guess we will have to agree to disagree because I do think Gaga is an incredible talent. You dont have to like a style of music to recognize talent the problem is many people into rock seem to underestimate pop/dance or even rap artist because of their own likes not based on talent!

I'm talking more about the sudden fan network that is suddenly so outspoken.
I have no way of proving my theory but, I think it's 100 percent certain that these "fans" who are mourning her loss, don't have a 3rd favorite Amy Winehouse song. Or a 2nd.

I'm a true fan, bc I have a 3rd favorite song, but no 2nd.

You are also comparing generations and the difference in music diversity out there at the times. Seemingly everyone was into one overall genre or some mix of very similar styles back in the Hendrix/Morrison age. Now we have soooo many different forms of "popular" music so there isn't the focus like in the past. 30 years later people have a different feel to them as well versus the time they came from. For someone to tell me Madonna would be an icon after all these years I'd laugh bc her music is just pop infused with sex and fashion. To me, and I'm no Gaga fan, LG's music is way beyond Madonna's at the same point in their career. I wouldn't say they are carbon copies either. LG is all over the place in many ways, while Madonna had a singular style after her papa don't preach days.

Full disclosure, the only artist I personally like in this convo is Hendrix. Music is such a heated topic and very personal, so it's pretty tough to argue the overall feel here, but LG would surely become a bigger icon with early death versus Winehouse just by the fact she is already without tragedy.

I think a lot of the hype that she had was from the way she looked and acted. The rehab song put her on the map and since she3 was a druggie, and looked crazy and fucked known drug heads - the public was more intrigued.

With that said - she did have a great sound and could sing very good.
But, her death means as much to me as that 90 yr old old man that died in his bed this morning in Wall, South Dakota.

Quitting Alcohol Killed Winehouse, Says Family (http://www.newser.com/story/124536/amy-winehouses-family-thinks-quitting-alcohol-killed-her-source.html)

Cold turkey kills.

That can't happen... can it?

And she did look a hell of a lot better in that picture above than in recent years.

According to Dr. Drew.... withdrawal from alcohol is the ONLY withdrawal that is routinely fatal.
I've been listening to LoveLine since the 90ies... and he's always made the above statement.

Hmmm..

LONDON (AP) - Amy Winehouse had no illegal drugs in her system when she died, and it is still unclear what killed the singer, her family said Tuesday.

The family said in a statement that toxicology tests showed "alcohol was present," but it hasn't yet been determined if it contributed to her death.

The 27-year-old soul diva, who had battled drug and alcohol addiction for years, was found dead in her London home on July 23, and an initial post-mortem failed to determine the cause of death.

A statement released by spokesman Chris Goodman on the family's behalf said "toxicology results returned to the Winehouse family by authorities have confirmed that there were no illegal substances in Amy's system at the time of her death."

It said the family awaited the outcome of an inquest that is due to begin in October.

Winehouse's father, Mitch, has said his daughter had beaten her drug dependency three years before her death, but he admitted she was still struggling to control her drinking after several weeks of abstinence.

Mitch Winehouse told mourners at the singer's July 26 funeral that she had said to him, "'Dad I've had enough of drinking, I can't stand the look on your and the family's faces anymore.'"

EXACTLY!
Healthy 27 year old women simply do not drop dead. Her blood was green, and everybody knows it. Just because they didn't find ILLEGAL drugs in her system on the day she died doesn't mean she didn't do 6oz of cocaine just 72 hours before she passed. And it also doesn't mean she didn't take 5 ambiens and a glass of wine. Or 6 Xanax & redbull. Or.... or...

When starlets like Amy and Britney Murphey and Lindsay and others collapse onstage "due to exhaustion", I always wonder why there aren't infantry soldiers passing out every 10 mins. Or guys who dig ditches in Arizona. Or who tar roofs in Texas. etc etc.

It's bullshit. The people who choose to believe that she was "clean" when she died -I guarantee- were her fans before she passed.

A London coroner says Amy Winehouse died as the unintended consequence of drinking too much alcohol. Pathologist Suhail Baithun told the singer's inquest Wednesday that Winehouse had consumed a "very large quantity of alcohol" and was more than five times over the legal drunk-driving limit when she died.

Not really earth shattering news since she was fresh from rehab but 5 times the legal limit - is pretty big.

.08% is the drunk driving limit here so thats like having a .4% BAC.
