The Port Authority wants to raise prices again. They want the bridges and tunnels from NJ and NY to go up to $12. I remember when it was only $4 to get into the city and that wasnt that long ago. Now they want it to be $12 and in a couple more years raise it to $14? They also want to raise the path train prices. You would be better off living in Manhattan because the added cost of tolls, the wasted time commuting in some cases a 15 mile commute takes an hour and the other cost like parking and quality of life. I would rather live in Manhattan then commute. People are either going to find work in NJ or move to NY.

It's a joke to say the least. Most of those tolls, like the GSP, are supposed to be LONG gone by now. Yah, right.

As for the $12 bs, they started it on the Verrazano earlier this year I believe to open this door. No surprise they're moving to do the same for the rest now. If anything, at least raise the tolls and lower mass transit to show you're trying to influence less congestion, but the only reason is revenue and they can hide behind paid salary positions unlike elected officials right now.

Although ny/nj govs have to sign off on the increases, so let's see if Christie is actually against raising taxes on everyone, or just the reg schlubs who have to pay these tolls daily and the increase would surely have a bigger impact on. Don't get your hopes up. He'll let this whisk on by and be ready for higher tolls people!

it goes to pay the huge pa police salaries. they make bank and their retirement package and health insurance is insane and they can retire after what 20 years (maybe its 25)? I know some port cops who retired getting close to $200k a year because it goes by their highest avg 2 or 3 years. Plus they keep their health ins and they can live off this for 20-35 years.

Christie should turn it down but he wont because the avg joe commuter/worker pays this out of pocket. The big bosses aka the rich dont pay this their companies do so it wont bother them or hurt their personal bottom line!

$200k?

If you're going to lie about shit, at least lie about something that doesn't have public documentation of salaries (http://www.portal.state.pa.us/portal/server.pt/community/pay_schedules/1740)

Assuming their pension is like literally every other pension ever, they'll be at most making their annual salary upon retirement and it appears they cap out at $120k for the highest ranking jobs.

The money goes toward repair and maintenance, as states start running into budget problems they slash DOT funding and in order to keep bridges, tunnels etc safe they have to up funds. Toll pikes are flat out robbery, though, but they do tend to have higher costs of maintenance.

Governments get away with this because the people that shortchange DOT funding can just blame it on the DOT people.

wrong their pensions are based on 2 or 3 years top earnings and it includes their over time so what many of them do is work the last 2 or 3 years before they retire or close to as much as they can to pad their pensions. I dont know what you used by im going by the port authority of ny and nj. I highly doubt Pennsylvania PA is the same thing I was talking about and I also highly doubt their police force gets paid even close to what our Port Authority does. Maybe you got confused with my pa post standing for port authority not Pennsylvania!

no need to lie or make shit up when I know people that have retired and are about to retired from the port authority and are making that much or just about!

yes and no. sorry but cops deserve to make a living but sorry they dont deserve to make $150k plus a year and have the best benefits as well as 6 weeks paid vacation and be able to retire with full benefits and pension after 20 or 25 years. People get public jobs for security they werent meant to get people rich. Now they have security and higher pay with better benefits then private jobs. Sorry you cant expect taxpayers to love this!

How many layers of "management" are there in these pseudo-criminal transportation authorities? It's all rife with corruption, no-show jobs, pensions and entitlements for political cronies. They already take in 10's if not 100's of millions of dollars each month but they cry poverty at every turn and raise tolls and fares. I don't know which is worse the P.A. or the MTA.

In NJ the parkway and turnpike tolls aren't even used to fund road maintenance or construction. The money goes into the "general fund" for the state and gets doled out for what ever. Then they float bonds and use the potential future toll income as collateral to borrow against.

I am a taxpayer. And my wife is a public school teacher, so I can see both sides of the issue. But I have a hard time blaming those who have difficult jobs and do them the best they can, often below average wages for others of similar education and background.

I know this isnt scientific, but both of our neighbors live in houses twice as big as ours and neither work. One is bilking disability insurance and getting paid under the table for jobs he does and the other gets SSI for 'mental disorders' which apparently prevent the whole family from getting a job.

My point is it seems there are a lot of other factors to blame than just government workers. I generally have a hard time blaming any working middle class person from getting what they can as the gap between the rich and the rest of us widens daily. The average teacher in my area makes more than me, but if they made less, how could that possibly help me? Our fight should not be with each other but with those who hold the real wealth in this country.

Go back to Canada and get out of my city! Nothing better then people who move to this area from the fly over states, Canada or whatever other boring miserable place they come from and then think they are "NYers"! It takes living here more then a couple of months to be a local or true NYer! You are still a visitor to me and have no say of who should come and or go. I don't get people who commute for a lot of time to work in NYC, or the general area. I worked with someone in Brooklyn that lived in New Jersey and his commute was at least two hours each way every day. How big can your yard be and how much cheaper can it possibly be to waste FOUR HOURS of every day commuting?

He also spent nearly $20 a day in tolls. That's fucking retarded. Move closer, stupid.

It depends on the size of the family. If you have several kids, living in a major city is extremely expensive. Besides... As someone who grew up with two working parents, who put in a lot of hours, I would have hated it if I had parents around all the time.

Yes, but the difference between a four bedroom home in the city, and one in the burbs is enormous. We have the same thing around here on a smaller scale. People live here and commute to DC. You can get a very large 4 bedroom house for 200-300K, but in DC it would be at LEAST a million or two.

If you're lucky enough not to have to deal with construction, I think it's about two hours. I did the commute, but that was back in the early 90's. On a good day, it was 90 minutes. On a bad day it was 3 hours. Things are much worse now, so the 90 minute rides just don't happen anymore.

BTW... As small as this area is, with all of the commuters we now have our own version of rush hour. On the two main roads into town from DC, it can take 15 minutes to go 2 or 3 miles, when the commuters are headed home. And this is in a county where the largest city (mine) only has about 25,000 people.

I live in North Jersey and it takes me 25 minutes to get into and out of the city on most days. I have a 1900 square foot condo that has a view of the NYC skyline. If I had something of comperable size in NYC it would have cost me 2-3 million.

I think its crazy to keep raising the tolls. When will it stop? The helix into the tunnel is horrible and full of potholes and the fucking tow truck drivers and PAPD at the tunnel are a joke. I got a flat from a big pothole and had to pull over in the right lane and sat with cars and trucks passing within inches of me car for over 15 minutes. yeah you cant get a very large anything in this part of NJ for $300k. If you want a nice house in a nice neighborhood with 4 bedrooms and maybe 2000 sq ft in Northern NJ within 20 miles of NYC you are talking about towns like Westfield, Crandford, Mountainside etc and the houses that are fixer uppers are $400k -$500k easily with taxes around $8k to $15k with a 60x 100 lot size property which isnt that big. Mountainside has affordable taxes of around $6k but not much property for the money and because the taxes are low compared to other nice towns in the area you over pay for the house. So you get a shittier house for $700k. I have a friend who wanted to stay in this area. Mountainside offered everything he wanted except the style of house. He bought a decent house for $650 knocked it down and rebuilt it for $400k. The house is now worth over $1.5 million but imho he could have gotten so much more house and bigger house if he went about 30 more miles west. But his commute to NYC would go from a 30-40 min train ride to 1:30 - 2 hour train ride each way!

Depends on where you live. If you live in Hoboken or Fort Lee or parts of JC some people have 2 bedrooms small aprt/condos and they pay close to what they would pay in NYC. Obviously not exactly as much but maybe only save 20%. They are also only a stones throw away from the path train and it takes min to get to the city.

I have a friend who bought a brownstone in Jersey city because it was better for him then the brownstone he was looking at in Harlem. They were both shit holes that need lots of work. They both cost $1 million. The only difference was the 1 in harlem would have been further away from where he worked in NYC (downtown) and would have only given him his 2 stores apt/brownstone with 1 rental on top. The one in JC NJ gave him a 2 story apt for himself and 2 rentals that he could rent out.

People that arent from this area have no clue how expensive and how long it takes to get to places that are so fucking close.

25 minutes is definitely not a bad commute, and I can understand living out of the city if you can get that type of place.

And NYC roads are the worst I've ever been on. I always thought it was crazy how much you have to pay in tolls, yet every road is in such disrepair.

I remember the first time I actually drove into NYC, I saw the toll for the Verazano Bridge and I was amazed that any toll could be that much and people would pay it. It was $7 at the time.

depends on where in Brooklyn you live and coming from and where you are going. If you are in NJ you have an easier way to get to downtown, or midtown or uptown by choosing a different route but if you are in Brooklyn by staten island you are much further then most anywhere in Northern Nj. You also can only get to downtown by using that bridge. You know how long it could take you to commute to a job in Midtown by central park if you lived by the Verzano Bridge or if you lived in Staten Island? The train and drive commute is so much easier from NJ then most anywhere in the other boroughs.

I agree on the latter part of that post, but not the using someone "bilking" the system as an example of why one potential wrong is now right. As for teachers, I'm not one to say they are overpaid in any way, but the system with most local cops is out of control. I too have friends in the prof and it's unreal. Most get to retire WAY too early and collect 6 figure salaries until they pass on with full health bens. I'm clearly one for paying them while working, but the retirement age has to be pushed back and lightened at least. It's not sustainable at this point it seems. I'm not an expert on this, but I'm looking forward to the debate I have yet to read here and what will come after to learn more.

i would say it takes me about 40% the time to get to the GWB than it would take me to get to brooklyn. In fact, most times of day, its faster for me to get to brooklyn by actually going through manhattan as opposed to jersey and over.

If my boss has to come to my location, he'll go through Manhattan from Elizabeth to Brooklyn because it's quicker than any other way.

I do love how people from shitty places get really defensive about where they're from. Canada, New Jersey, Texas, anywhere in the Midwest.

The PAPD cop i talked to when i called for assistance told me to get out of my car....

We can all bitch but it wont change. They dont know how to manage it so to get rid of the problems they create they take money from the working man.

Someone sounds like my ex-neighbor in Weehawken on Boulevard East!?

Yay/nay?

Man do I miss drinking some beers on my balcony looking out on the city skyline at night while cooking some steaks and playing some good music. I really miss that spot. I need to invest in some property with the market dropping so bad right now.

I don't know more. I just like trying to irritate you.

But seriously, keep trying to justify how great the "6th borough" is (that puts the entire state of NJ under Staten Island, right?).

And wow! People fly into your shitty, crime ridden city to come to a real city. That's something to be proud of!

People actually fly into JFK more.

Actually Staten Island was part of NJ but we didnt want it we gave it to NYC.

NJ is such a better place to live. I love NYC and love the lifestyle but when most people say that about NYC they are talking about Manhattan. No one with brains could ever think the quality of life living in Brooklyn or Queens and any of the boroughs is better then living in NJ. When someone says they live in NYC normal people think Manhattan not Brooklyn so stop lying to yourself and trying to make yourself seem more "NY" then you are. You moved here and live in Brooklyn, great.

You dont irritate me you just prove how stupid you are to the area and lifestyle. I just like once again proving how naive you are and how you know nothing. Oh wait im sorry you know shitty bands and music because you think its cool to say you were a DJ!

So he take the Gothals bridge from jersey to staten island then drives 10 miles through the island to the verazano to brooklyn. Brooklyn is only easy to get to if you live or work downtown in Manhattan.

I commute daily from Hell's Kitchen to Red Hook, so I have a decent idea of how long it could take.

But yeah, the southern part of Brooklyn is far from anything. Except Staten Island. And no one wants to be near Staten Island.

I know you're trying to rile up Snacks and people like to shit on NJ, but I had my choice and chose it bc it had the best of all worlds, specifically the Weehawken/Hoboken area for young people. I had a blast and NYC was my playground whenever I wanted to hop on a gypsy bus, the ferry or the Path when down visiting/hanging with my chick or friends. Still hang out there time to time, just grew out of it on a weekend basis as in the past.

Hoboken has some AWESOME restaurants too. The staff at many, including our fav bars still know us by name. Augustino's is fucking awesome, and Robongi's sushi is so fresh it wiggles!

I love so many parts of this country and NJ does have its problems but we really do have the best of all. We are within 60 mins from anywhere you live nj to do anything you want. Shore, beaches, the country, the NYC, Philly, Atlantic City, Sporting Events and multiple sports teams for all leagues, suburbs and urban life, education everywhere, some of the best high schools and colleges, skiing, mountain climbing, hunting (if you do that) and whatever else you can imagine. Even with how expensive it is to live in NJ, NJ is always ranked as 1 of the best states to live in because we have everything including all cultures!

So you live in Hells kitchen and work in Red Hook? My bad thought it was the other way around!

No offense but why? I love Manhattan and the lifestyle but if I worked in Newark it wouldnt make sense to live in Manhattan, I would live somewhere nice near Newark NJ. So why not live in Brooklyn if your job is in Brooklyn? You would have less commute and less rent.

I like living in Manhattan. We had limited time to find a place and I didn't like the places we saw in Brooklyn (actually, the areas) so we went with a place we knew and had visited before. I'm very happy with my choice.

My commute is only about 20 minutes or so, so it's not that bad.

People are either going to find work in NJ or move to NY.

http://cityroom.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/08/05/port-authority-seeks-major-toll-increase/

When I heard this on the radio on my way to work a few days ago my jaw hit the ground. I can't believe they'd want to jack up the prices by 50%.

The only thing I would disagree with on this one is Skiing. NJ 'mountains' are nothing compared to VT/NH/NY mountains. I would say NJ is good for beginner to intermediate skiers. Aside from that, I agree with everything else.
