I do some work online. The majority of it entails job searching, which is truly a full-time job. I also do some contracted work online to fill the void; not IT, mind you, but research and writing done for clients from all corners of America, most of whom I have never met.

The fact that I'm unemployed may strike against my opinion that unions, at least since the 1980s or so, have been nothing but fiscal noise for the workers and industries with which they associate. I do not believe that they serve a necessary purpose any more. I also understand that it is a complicated ethical dilemma, and that there are strong, personal opinions on both sides. I just can't get over the fact that whether US workers need unions is a question that, to me, does not pass the giggle test, so to speak.

My grandparents tell me about how, before unions, factory bosses basically treated the first generation children of immigrants like slaves, harrassed the women, fired anyone who said anything, really just acted like all around garbage.

There are more laws and agencies in place these days but saying unions should be completely done away with is saying you trust companies to behave. I cant imagine theres a working adult in the country who doesn't know someone who was fired under shitty, suspect circumstances.

If unions ever do go away 100% I'm sure the countries immigration laws will get a lot more lax.
