We have a thread for most obnoxious commercials but for this thread I mean not just a commercial itseld but an entire ad campaign.
What made me think of it was the stupid Coors Light commercials with the bars that tell you if the beer is cold.
It was a retarded idea when it was just the mountains changing colors or with one bar but to now add a second bar for really really cold is just plain idiotic.
So the commercial is only dwarfed in it's ridiculousness by the entire premise.

Thomas Edison executing animals of various sizes, in a very public forum in order to convince ppl of the dangers of Tesla's AC method as opposed to Edison's Direct Current method. The most disturbing and infamous of these executions was Topsy the Elephant.

It's from The Simpsons. Krusty Burger sponsors the 1984 Olympics and has a contest where you can win a burger if the US wins a medal in a specific sport on your gamepiece. Krusty has rigged it so all the events are in sports dominated by the Soviet Bloc countries. When they boycott, and the US dominates, Krusty threatens to spit in every fiftieth burger due to the losses he's suffering and Homer states that he "likes those odds".
Its a classic Simpsons episode and what most people don't realize is that its based on an actual marketing blunder by McDonalds and the 1984 Olympics:
http://www.cracked.com/article_19334_the-5-biggest-disasters-in-history-marketing-ideas.html
With the Eastern Bloc competition out of the way, the U.S. wound up winning significantly more medals as the last time around -- a mind-boggling 174 medals total (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1984_Summer_Olympics_medal_table). Instead of the 34 golds the U.S. won in 1976, the 1984 games saw the Americans bring home 83.
Which meant McDonald's had to give away much more food than they expected, including more than twice as many valuable Big Macs. There were rumors that locations were running out of Big Macs (http://www.nytimes.com/1984/08/10/business/advertising-big-mac-s-olympic-giveaway.html)... that the customers didn't pay a dime foor.
I thought about explaining the joke in my original post, but I didn't want Dude! to have a cow.

People don't know that? I was 13 and basically ate for free at mcdonalds that summer. It was great, you'd redeem a winner and get a new game piece - another winner!

As a bartender I hate these things more then anyone. Its hard enough running around trying to take care of a busy bar without some jackoff telling me the beer isnt cold enough because the "supercold" line isnt lit up. Fucking dickbags.

In the 90's, a DC area Dominos Pizza owner promised a dollar off for every touchdown that the Skins scored the day before, for the whole year. The first year he did it, the Skins had their highest scoring season on record. They were averaging something like 45-50 points a game. Given the price of a Dominos pizza at the time, they ended having quite a few days of one or two dollar pizzas at ever location the guy owned. And owned a LOT.

Did you include that he was the first movie pirate , when movie pirating wasn't mainstream?
In 1902, agents of Thomas Edison bribed a theater owner in London for a copy of A Trip to the Moon by Georges Méliès. Edison then made hundreds of copies and showed them in New York City. Méliès received no compensation. He was counting on taking the film to the US and recapture its huge cost by showing it throughout the country when he realized it had already been shown there by Edison. This effectively bankrupted Méliès.

If we're throwing in terrible radio promotions, then Hold Your Wee for a Wii has to be the all time champ here.
Well, that or Sex for Sam. Though, in O&A's defense, at least no one died in that.
