REM announces today that they are calling it a career. They are walking away as friends and brothers and leaving us with a great catalog of music.

I definitely enjoyed their earlier albums than their later offerings. I still listen to Reckoning, Fables, and Murmur. I heard that last album is supposed to be good, but I have not listened to all of it yet.

Guess they finally caught up with their irrelevance.

Listening to the last album right now and it's pretty good.

I saw them play at the University of Houston when I was in grad school. Since I was a poor grad student I was looking for a way to see the concert without having to pay and as luck would have it, there was an ad in the paper the week before the concert looking for people to work security at the concert. You wouldn't get paid but you could see the show for free. As luck would have it I was assigned to stand next to the stage where the group entered and exited and got to talk with the guys a little. Nice guys, except Stipe was a bit out there.

REM. I never got that band. It just wasn't for me.
Between his goofy, constricted voice... and their goofy songs ("End Of The World", "What's The Frequency Kenneth", and stuff like "Shiny Happy People", etc) and the goofy ever-changing image (bizarre eye makeup one year, faux grunge the next year, then Armani, etc), and Stipe's inexcusably retarded and overly energetic dancing.... this band ALWAYS felt like a novelty act.
I never thought of them as a serious band. Even "Everybody Hurrrrrrrts..... sommmmtimes" felt like a novelty song to me. It was, like, one degree of separation from Crash Test Dummies' stupid single.

I know they're supposed to be this big, important, politically charged band that really had something to "say" but, I just don't see it. Never did.

My only sadness is that I never got to see them live. Other than that it was a great career and they deserve to ride into the sunset however and whenever they like.

a couple of bright spots in the last few years, but most of the stuff they've been churning out since new adventures in hi-fi was pretty boring.

now lets see if U2 follows REM's example.

I assumed this was a thread resurected from 10 years ago.

I thought so too, but I looked them up. They had a #5 album this year and a #2 in '08. I saw them in 1987. Cool show.

I was kinda sad this so happened so close to the 2Oth anniversary release of nevermind. Cobain was heavily influenced by R.E.M.
