on an unrelated note, when they come back from break sometimes, opie will say what song it is when i can 100% tell he has no clue. i wish someone had the balls to pull all the rejoiners and make him listen and name each one. i bet he would not be over 60%
I would bet he'd get less than 40% right. I've never heard such a clueless "former DJ" when it comes to music.

They were talking about the early days of XM, Danny was being oddly defensive even though the energy of the conversation wasn't like that. They were talking about what an idiot Master Po was, Mars agreed but also said he could handle himself in a fight with seemed to really piss Danny off.
They ask Mars if he liked the show having heard it for the first time when he started working for XM, and if he liked it now. He basically said he's grown to like it and it pays the bills. Danny jumped on this and called Mars a sellout, Mars says most of the people he didn't like are no longer with the show. It comes out that Mars and Danny haven't spoken in a few months over a disagreement that started while setting up an Apple TV.
It quickly degenerated into just yelling at eachother. Danny was being a bit of a bitch, but anytime someone's like 'I dont care what people think about me, I just say the truth all the time." I think they're willfully being an asshole.

Sounds about normal for him. I did here the beginning of it and don't get him being upset hearing someone say Po could physically take care of himself. A night of fights would be great with him and Po.
Also, it was a bit, but Po would manhandle Dave when he flipped out. Dave would destroy Danny.

This came up when Danny was fighting with Steve, how Steve expressed his frustration physically (punching walls) and Danny felt superior to him because he never escalated to violence like that. Danny is exactly like Sam, he's going to be a button pusher completely standing behind the fact that noone can lay a finger on him. And I really disliked Steve in those arguments.

I saw this presented on CNN.com with his full initial statement and then his full follow up. I only heard about the whole Obama is Hitler thing on O&A, but I also dont watch morning shows so I dont know if that was going on.
I actually dont care if he did say "Obama is Hitler." That's his right to have that opinion. I'm saying if you're a guy who belongs to MULTIPLE groups that get perceived as racist; Tea Partiers, Southern Whites, Country Musicians... I wouldn't make a prepared analogy that involved Hitler and then act confused that people found it to be in poor taste. I think he's trying to purposefully be provacative, which again is totally fine, but then again you need to deal with what you provoke at that point.
He could've said "cats and dogs" "Cops and Robbers" "Yankees and Red Sox" "Lee and Grant" "Lincoln and Jefferson" even "Netanyahu and Arafat" and made the same exact point, and really even a better point, without the cultural weight that "Hitler" carries. If he said "Martin Luther King jr and James Earl Ray" "David Duke and Farakhan" "Osama Bin Laden and a 911 Widow" "The Columbine Shooters and their classmates" do you see where that would make the exact same point, but is pushing into territory where the reality of those relationships starts to overshadow the original point?
But I think this is the king of all non issues. I haven't heard anyone in my real life remark that Hank Williams Jr called Obama Hitler, and I havent really seen it in the news that way.
What I did find really annoying is that, in bitching about how the media are "liars" and spread misinformation for ratings OA&J called for a boycott of the NFL even though the NFL didn't pull the song from ESPN's show MNF. When Travis brought that up Opie still insinuated that it was the case. Plus they always bitch about groups trying to organize boycotts but jump right into that mentality immediately.
The bottom line is we dont get to decide how anyone else reacts to anything, that's why free speech works and is fair. I agree that I hope people get the full information before they make a decision but if someoen did hear his full quote and was offended by it then that's fine, that's the way the system is supposed to work.
Gutter
10-05-2011, 06:58 AM
I think all that's fine too, and I'm not saying the people who heard the analogy don't have the right to pull back a second and gasp at it if they feel like they had to.....its just the reactionary response misinformed people have that is so infuriating.....they want Hank fired, him to apologize, stand in the middle of town square doused in gasoline and begging for a match. My problem isn't that people get offended too easily or at all, its what they think needs to be done after the fact to make amends because someone said something in poor taste. He shouldn't have people calling for him to be fired, he shouldn't have to apologize and he certainly shouldn't have those dummies on Fox and Friends sit there and act like they don't understand the simple analogy and act so confused by it that every piece of news that you see now says, "Hank Williams says Obama is Hitler". They made it seem like that's what he was saying by faking that they misunderstood him and continued that train of thought in that very calculated faux-naive way that puts words into peoples mouths and promotes this misdirected outrage. They know people love to seethe and lick their chops over shit like this and we have to stop coddling this behavior.
Its not that people get offended, its that they think they are owed something afterwards simply because they were.

But Hank absolutely constructed that comparison to disparage Obama and then pretended like he didn't know what the problem is just like Fox n Friends pretended like they didn't know what his analogy meant. I object to categorizing anyone as over sensitive. It's ironic that people react so strongly to people reacting strongly. Until they start trying to legislate something I really dont care what people feel.

If disparaging the president deserves getting fired, then there would be no political cartoonists. The point with the Hank thing is that it is yet another example of someone saying something and everyone understanding exactly what it means, and then acting like it means something different. We all know that he was using the analogy to illustrate two enemies meeting together, not that Obama is like Hitler.

I think there is a legitimate concern that all of this will one day soon affect legislation. I think you can categorize ppl as over sensitive when you look at the things that people are getting upset about these days. Its the same people getting upset over the slightest comment, or misinterpreted analogy, or song, or slip up in a news cast, or whatever it is all the time. Right now, they want apologies and people fired.....soon that won't be good enough and the next step further is a very scary prospect.

And when it does then the conversation and appropriate action totally changes. Up until that point I feel that I dont have a right to determine what's an appropriate emotional reaction. People want lots of things that we never concern ourselves with, and I get that you dont want people's reactions to cut into what you enjoy, but people who are against caving into special interest groups need to realize the only mandate getting passed down is financial loss and the companies that cave in are the ones responsible for changing the things you enjoy, not the protesters. The company could just as easily say "we dont care about your objections, it makes more financial sense to carry on as usual." You should task those companies with protecting your interests, not expect these 'over sensative' people to keep their mouths shut.

But he didn't get fired, they pulled his song for one week and they've probably already paid him the money to use it for either this season or in perpetuity, whatever deal they made. The difference with a cartoonist is they're employed to make political commentary so it makes sense they will critisize political figures. Disney is wrapped up in a tight situation, because in his own time a figure that is very recognizably connected to one of their products made a statement that I agree was very poorly thought out, and in my opinion chosen to be controversial. Now, they dont have the ability to tell Hank Williams what he can say or do but they can protect their product by distancing it from the debate that then arrises, a debate that has the potential to distract from their product and the ad revenue it generates. But noone is taking away his right to say anything about the president, or Disney's choice to play his (terrible) song or not.

Its not really the emotional reaction I'm concerned with though. Its this idea that because people decided they were offended by something that they all of a sudden deserve to be catered to. I don't think its too much to ask people to sack up a little bit and put aside this watchdog mentality in most cases. And yes, the companies that pander to their boycotts need to take that advice as well. Fuck's sake if we got as offended about the national unemployment rate, or crumbling school systems, or any other of the thousands of problems that are really quite threatening at present, imagine what could get done. Unfortunately people seem to be more concerned about offensive speech right now.

But do you think people 'decide' to be offended. I think they're organically offended. Even so I think you or people need to put your entire emphasis on the companies that cater to these people, instead of these people.

yes, I do. If you look at things that people have screamed bloody murder about, the majority of it, I feel, is a decision more than a visceral reaction because what also seems to be occurring in conjunction with that is twisting what people say into something that wasn't intended or in some cases was never said in the first place. It's made to sound worse a lot of the time because there needs to be more justification for what these people are upset about. I also think that its a decision more often than not these days because if you look at the actual people that are offended, a lot of the times its people getting offended for the sake of someone else or some other group. A comic makes a joke about gay people and while all the white straight people in the room get upset, there's some queen in the back laughing his ass off. its almost as if people feel obligated to react that way out of fear of being counted among the offensive.
I like this idea of the emphasis on the company though....perhaps if there were enough ppl that could show a boycotted company that the ones who will stick around are greater than the ones that will defect, more common sense decisions will get made.

This would be somewhat valid except for one thing. All of the activity and criticism in response to the comment is based on pretending that he meant something that everyone knows he didn't. It's just a way for one side to get points.
Now, If he said something that was actually controversial, like calling the president "Hitler", your logic would have one (minor) flaw. Hank Williams Jr. is a recovered substance abuser who is famous for singing about murder and smoking dope. So, Disney's kind of already signed off unsavory aspects.

Well, it doesn't really matter what he meant or what he didn't mean to Disney, they're just trying to distance themselves from something that will distract from their product. Think about when they pulled Rachel Ray's Duncan Donuts commercials because her scarf resembled a scarf that Yasir Arrafat wears. Rachel Ray and Duncan Donuts have never been accused of being associated with the PLO, but once someone makes that association then the commercial is useless, because when you see it you think "Hey look, it's the Yasir Arafat commercial."
It's true, it is fickle that people would be ok with the symbolism in Hank Williams Jr songs but not the symbolism in his argument. If everyone could be smarter that would be great, that would probably solve the problem, but we have to deal with tangibles here.
It's also true that we're playing a politically motivated amnesia game here too. Each side wants to take the other side to task at any opportunity, and the media benefits either way. To do that everyone has to be a little unreasonable. Again I think this is seperate from particularly sensative people who are truly offended, or people like the JADL who are trying to represent their own interests, neither of whom I fault. There are way more moving parts to something like this than people really ever want to point out. And Disney just wants to make as appealing of a MNF broadcast as they possible can.
I dont buy that Hank Williams Jr isn't playing as stupid as the people who are acting like they intellectually dont understand his analogy. He didn't pull that clunky ass pair out of thin air, he had it prepared, which means he chose Hitler with intent, knowning it was something he could wriggle out of later at very little personal risk. In my mind the really sensative offended people are the least full of shit among the whole bunch.

Since it HASN'T been mentioned on the show... Is there a reason why Opie is going on and on with some tease about Justin Bieber and Selena Gomez on twitter that will likely have no real payoff? He does know he's almost 50, right?
It's because he's desperate for anyone famous to notice him.

agreed.....I think its hilarious too. its even better when they have a guest in like DeRossa who gets on board and rips into these terrible shows as well. I don't know if I missed it, but I don't think they've ever gone after Jim Kerr and Shelly Sundstein and I would really love to hear that if they're even on in the mornings anymore.

I think he was being sarcastic, meaning that you wouldn't be able to tell the difference between Fez physically being there or not. A while back he did a whole show pretending Fez was co-hosting with him while Ant was on vaca. He kept saying to nobody in particular "Everything good over there Fezzie?" It was pretty funny. Yes, this all can happen but I promise you, it is not correct to say that it is 100% of the time.
I talked about this in another thread before but I have experienced things in the presence of multiple family members - who all saw the same things. There is no way that seperate individuals can all manifest the same images sounds etc. I have never talked to or communicated with a ghost so I cant say it is a soul or demons etc but I spent years living in a ahaunted house and it got to the point that no family or friends would come over anymore. We finally moved it got so bad. And I promise you, this shit happened!

Yes, there is a way. Much like when a group of people experience fake pandemics. Happens a lot with children in school. One kid faints, then another, then another... all due to superstition, social mirroring and plain old being scared.
You'll be more susceptible to hear and see things, with people who say they hear and see things - also, if someone tells you a place is haunted, you'll automatically start listening and looking for things that aren't there. Your brain will magnify the most normal things to give you want you want.

Do you think Ghosts are afraid of spiders?
Like if there was a ghost standing in a dark corner waiting to scare you, and a spider climbed down right in front of his face, I mean, he'd be scared right? RIGHT?

I hate to read into it but it sounds like it was pretty bad, my mother in law had a stroke two years ago and her speech, right arm and leg as well as her short term memory was affected it really is a hard thing to deal with if you had it or know the person that had it.
She was in rehab for a year and now lives with us and will forever.

Shitty news.
Obviously, we don't know the severity, but my dad had a stroke and heart attack 9 years ago and other than being blind in one eye he's suffered no ill effects.

I hope he comes out of it ok and that it wasn't too severe. This is fucking depressing. Can we get a break from hearing shitty news about our favorite comedians for a little while please? Fucks sake, one after the other lately.

I think it would be great if Sam keeps up doing all of the shows he does at Sirius for years and never gets an compensation or recognition.
He is trying so hard to force himself into popularity (i dont blame him for trying) but it would be so funny if he never gets anything for it.
Smarmy ass he is....

That's what I was thinking too.....I'm hoping the news coming out a week later means that he will eventually be alright. I don't think his family would have said anything if he had the stroke and was reduced to a vegetable state.

I totally get how ppl could hate Sam, but he runs a good show.....he stirs the shit, gets ppl in arguments with each other and plays the "i didn't do it" card really really well. He is smarmy and conniving and I really like that about him on the air. Guys like Sam and Pepp and ESD are the one who will be taking over when Ron Fez Op and Ant have all done their last shows.
Holy god how insane would that be every day? The Sam/Pepper/Dave show. I think that would be awesome.

IT people definately have a thing. On a sympathetic note they do have to do their job with someone standing behind them saying "I think my hard drive isn't fast enough." Like seriously you dont even know how to work your cell phone, let the guy do his job.

Basically a program I use at work isn't printing anything. The program is pointing to a working printer, but nothing happens when I hit the button. I'm explaining all that and he kept jumping in, but he had that breathy shallow laugh before he said anything that just wreaks of that attitude that says, "hahaha stupid non computer guy thinks this is why its not working". I don't really know how else to explain that, but thats what he was doing. he was like "mmmpphhhh haha, wellll THAT wouldn't realllllly have anything to do with it, it doesn't work like THAT haha". I was like, hey I didn't send you here. I had someone tell me they were going to call me back 2 days ago to fix this, and now you're here. You called me dude.

It had nothing to do with that though.....he called me after I set up the request for an assist. I need to print things from this program and its not working, so they sent him to me. I just explained what was going on and why i needed help and he kept interrupting me and being a douche about it. Then for no reason he decided to delete Google Chrome because its not the browser we should be using, but it had nothing to do with why I couldn't print. So, this wasn't a novelty call, I need this thing to work and its not and he wanted to come by and act all superior about things like a dick.

Compare how many reps there are vs soldiers; of course the soldiers don't get as good health care. This is one of the areas where anthony really is a douche, tho. Just because they might want better care, give them no care? Makes perfect sense.

Why wouldn't a Rep who makes more money than an infantry soldier be able to afford more expensive treatments? What is he talking about? It seems like he would be OK with health care based on what you can afford.
