no thanks. give me jenna wolfe as a new news correspondent. she let her hair get licked by a cow, got fake tattoos to freak out the regular today show people, and hangs off of buildings for the show.

Cute and really smart. Constitutional lawyer, I believe. Loved her on the Daily Rundown on MSNBC.

But if we're talking news correspondents, give me Lara Logan. After she was attacked in Egypt I almost booked a flight to go over there and castrate the fuckers themselves.

She is straight-up gorgeous, her accent makes me swoon, and she's brave as hell. She had a segment during the height of the Iraq war about US troops rescuing a high-profile Iraqi doctor & his family stuck behind al-Sadr's lines. Incredible report.

same here. Hey Ron, how do you know you're straight? did you decide to be straight or were you just attracted to girls your whole life?

I think certain aspects of the culture are a choice....you can choose to be as flamboyant as you want or not, you can choose to act like a complete cartoon character or not....but as far as the basic concept of preference, it just is.

Ron needs to shut the fuck up and listen for a second. He's way off on this one.

My friend's best friend, a gay man, was found drowned in a shallow drainage pool in chicago this winter and it was ruled 'accidental' without the cops doing any kind of investigation into the guy he was living with at the time, who was most likely the person he was with on the night he died.

No ROn - that caller said he wished he was straight so society would accept him. Nothing about God....

Ron is mixing arguments about civil liberties and private social opinions to kindof maximize his effect. Gay people wanting to be married does not mean gay people want to be married in the church, or that a law would force the church to allow gay marriage, but rons kindof balling it all up together.

He's basically blaming the victim too. Any act by the government which deligitimizes gays reinforces anyones personal anti gay feelings. Saying gays should try and be seperate from society as much as they can totally works against the possibility of that acceptance. It sounds like he's objectifying them to an extent, like they're all soem kind of magical art fairies that stomp on that to work office jobs and buy houses in the suburbs. Not that some people, including gays, actually desire that lifestyle.

His position is that your preferences are somehow choices. You have no choice over what your body wants, whether it be flavors of food or sexual attraction. You have a choice over whether you act on it or not, but acting like that's an actual choice is retarded.

well, i don't think it boarders on bullying....he's speaking very generally about the collective. Ron's argument is that they should just get past it because it shouldn't matter, but I don't understand why he disagrees with choice vs. genetics.

And I hate when ppl get into arguments and they take all these other things that have nothing to do with the argument and twist it to prove their point. you can't just say, "well this happens over here, so it make my argument true". Ron doing that this entire segment is the annoying part.

yea, not back then it wasn't. "ohh toughen up" or "what you want me to do about it?" is the usual response I got from teachers. I had seriously considered actually murdering a person or three by the time I got out of freshman/sophmore year in high school.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about this over pussification that's going on. Being called "stupid" or "dumb"....whatever, there are things that I dealt with myself, and that other kids should deal with themselves, but when it gets to the point where kids are making GIANT signs to be posted on your locker that make fun of you, or when a kid writes a quote that goes into the fucking yearbook that makes fun of you under your own picture, or when you show up with fucking black eyes and bleeding noses everyday. Nothing makes you feel more alone when teachers see that and do NOTHING.

Fez is right. When you're in that position that's all you want to do....just be fucking ignored for a day. That's when I remember having a good day at school.....when no one even talked to me. The longer I could coast through unnoticed, the better.

also, im thinking about that kid who most recently killed himself. HE was sent to counseling for being bullied. there was no mention of the accused bully getting any counseling help. if i remember correctly, his sister went to the school dance a week after her brother's suicide and the bullies were STILL fucking with this kid after he died. the boy's friends played a lady gaga song for him at the dance, and the bullies were chanting something along the lines of "we're glad he's dead."

i cant fucking understand it.

Also covered in my landmark listening thread piece. The bully is as fucked up as the bullied, and the thing that eventually fixes this is widespread educational programs similar to the AIDS, drug and smoking education people in my generation got.

Why are people acting like the old system worked? Does it seem like we're really fucking with success by changing anything about kids are raised today over how we were raised as kids?

I wish they'd have these bullshit talks on Wednesdays or Fridays, there's more to flip to.

If I learned one thing from it is that if you're getting made fun of and picked on, and beat up really bad, you just need to haul off and break someones fucking face one day. smash him in the fucking face with a bat, brass knukles, a roll of dimes, whatever. Break his fucking face open and watch him bleed.

Deal with the consequences later, but no one will ever fuck with you again. I was too scared to do that because I was afraid of getting expelled or what my parents would do, and it took me a while to become that jaded about it cause honestly back then I didn't want to hurt anyone back. Things might have been different for a little while in high school if I had.

Luckily though I went away to college in a different state and was able to re-invent myself and I had a great time.

But you cant encourage kids to just live by prison rules. You can't rely on a childs judgement and restraint. A kid who has the bully itch and can justify why it's ok to tease young gutter will make just as much out of the idea that sometimes its ok to really get violent. An adult can weigh consequence, result and action, a kid cant even begin to approach those ideas in the same way.

I wasn't just getting teased. physical attacks were as much a part of getting the usual verbal shit. at some point, to use a terribly annoying phrase, enough is enough and when the teachers won't help and everyone else ignores it, beating the fuck out of the kid that's the main reason why your life sucks at that point is a viable option as far as I'm concerned.

I think the idea that we want to take the lessons of our own childhoods to make better childhoods for the next generations is pretty universal. If you knew your kid was getting bullied really badly I'll bet you'd exhaust all kinds of possibilities before putting them in the position where they could wind up in serious trouble, or making a seriously regrettable mistake. I'll bet you'd go kick his dad's ass before you had him risking his own stuff.

and yes, giving my hypothetical kid the green light to do something that extreme would be the absolute last ditch effort to make it stop. And I am incredibly worried about being able to control myself in front of my own kid if I ever had to confront the father of my hypothetical son's hypothetical bully. That would be all the anger from my childhood and all the anger for what he would be going through rolled up into a giant ball of hate and I'd be sorry for the person on the receiving end of that. I'm not sure I'd want to blow up like that in front of any kid, let alone my own.

I know I'm way late on this one but, I really enjoyed the discussion on the show... and I really enjoyed the points that you guys raised here on the board.

I was frustrated by Ron during this debate... until I realized that he was simply trying to get Fez involved in a dialog.

The "problem" such as it is with gay people is, they ARE different. They treat themselves as such. Fez relentlessly covers stories from all over the country that are typical in every way... except that the victim was gay. People (including Fez) speculate aaaaall the time about which celeb is dating which celeb. But if there's speculation about a possibly GAY celeb, Fez not only takes issue with it... but he takes it personally. Today, I truly feel like Ron was letting the baby have his bottle. "okay big cat, you wanna talk about gay issues, let's talk about gay issues until YOU change the subject. So there."
It almost seemed like he was being combative with Fez simply to coax Fez out of the closet.

Ron's arguments today were not in keeping with his usual logic. Ron has stated many many times that "you are who you pretend to be". But today... he stated that a guy like Fez isn't gay because he's never acted on it. But Fez is certainly pretending to be gay... and by Ron's (previous) logic... he should be treated and accepted as such.

I think the whole "you choose to be gay" stems from a different argument. One that wasn't mentioned on the show... or here.
Many people, usually female... BECOME gay after experiencing some sort of trauma or abuse. A little girl is born straight (as far we know)... and then she gets molested by her step-father.... and soon after, she becomes a lesbian. No... not always... but it is common. It happens. In those instances... it's easy to say that being gay IS a choice.

One could argue that Fez's relationship with "mother" had turned him off to women. That is also a common situation.

ALSO... I don't think Fez is able to distinguish between "bullying" and "teasing" and "getting beat up". Teasing a boy for being slightly feminine is simply part of growing up. Like making fun of a kids accent... or lisp.. or stutter... or acne. Yeah, it sucks. But it isn't something that requires police intervention... or suicide.

Ron's arguments today were, in my opinion, nothing more that an attempt to get Fez talking. "The Wire" isn't working for poor Fezzie. No characters. No prep. No point of view. No opinions, really.
If you ask me.... Ron took one for the team today. He made himself look bad just so Fez could talk comfortably about something.
