There's a tinge of anti-social (not hipness) in visiting a landmark locale without taking part in what millions of others experienced before you. Doesn't mean you have to hit every tourist trap; or avoid walking a few blocks off Fifth to discover a neighborhood. either they had no structure in their lives or just got away with too much growing up and the military was one of their only options outside of community college

most of them turned out great in the end, but it wasn't out of pure patriotism that they joined, as with many others
