I knew it would be a slippery slope. At 1st it was for truckers but now its for passenger vehicles.
Once again our federal overlords in their infinite wisdom overstepping their boundaries.
Soon it will be no smoking in your own car.

isnt it any portable electronic devices? That means ipods, gps systems, satelite radios, cb radios etc. anything can be a distraction and how can you know if someone is using one in an emergency or for directions at the time when someone is getting pulled over? Tell that to a cop and see if he cares. How about they go after cops who use their phones while driving their cop cars going 30 or 40 mph over the speed limit and not using a bluetooth but actually holding it to heir ears.
this is stupid. making texting illegal and make it where you have to use a bluetooth or wired headset. but to take it away is idiotic. some people are more distracted changing their radio or eating while driving. Why not just ban driving altogether?

Seriously? I have a ford SYNC system. I don't have to do anything. One setup, and it's done, my phone is integrated into my system. Press a button on the wheel, say "Call Home", boom.
I have noticed that my driving has gotten much, much better since I've had this system. Totally not distracted at all when talking to people.
And good luck trying to enforce it. I'm not wearing a head set, for all you know, I was singing with the radio.

You guys act like they have trouble enforcing the already weird "no texting" laws.
It's the government trying to add another reason for the police to be able to stop you. "I pulled you over because it looked like you were talking on your phone." Just wait until there is language in the law that allows the police to search your car due to you allegedly talking on a phone.
And it's not good luck enforcing it, good luck DEFENDING yourself against it. It's your word against a cop's word on whether or not you were using the phone.

I wear a bluetooth but you are right people will just use the ones built into their car or buy the portable versions. personally i like the actually headsets better. the ones that are built into the car or portable are glorified speaker phones, i never understood how someone likes those better then headsets?

Depends on the type of car and system. I had a rental Kia with the bluetooth and it was abysmal, but the system on my car sounds as clear as talking directly on the phone.
It's the same thing with the headsets, though.

its clear for you but what about the person you are talking to doesnt it sound just like if they were talking to you on a speaker? I hate when some one talks to me on one of those or speaker phones. Not only is there no privacy there clarity sucks. 1 of my best friends had one come with his car in his lincoln navigator. Every time he called me I rushed off the phone because it was terrible. I also hated being in his car while he received a call. Everyone had to be quiet and listen to his conversation.
Could you imagine if you have someone in the car hear something you didnt want them to hear? how about the radio shows who the incoming call is and you decide to ignore it with your wife/gf in the car and she wonders why? You know how that will work out.

I've held entire conference calls from my in car bluetooth. And how about you just don't pair the call or send it to your handset when you have people in the car? Not really a problem.

I've never had a problem with using the speakerphone system in my car in talking with people or hearing them.
If a passenger had to say something, that would be an issue because the mic doesn't pick them up as well, but that's the only limitation.
The only issue I've had with it is calling Ron and Fez... I would have to switch to the handset if I wanted to hear and speak clearly on the air. The phone screener said he couldn't hear me.

Exactly. Plus the data the NTSB is flawed when it comes to "hands free". Do you still have to look at the phone to dial a contact? Hands free can mean a lot of different things, but I think the bluetooth systems in cars now like Sync and others give you a truly hands free experience where you don't even touch the phone.

And, even a good bluetooth device can allow the same thing. My Android bluetooth set allows for the same voice commands as built in systems and cost less than $50. It reads text messages to me too, but it sounds too weird, so I never use it for that.
Get rid of all cell phone use, then you might as well (as I mentioned) ban talking, listening to the radio, cup holders, all advertizing within view of the roads (including what's painted on cars and trucks), and while we're at it... nose picking.

They have the no hand held / text laws here in Jersey and I still constantly use my phone. I hate bluetooths, they hurt my ear. And I cant just ignore my incoming calls, in my line of work Im on the road alot and do much of my work from a cell phone. Never had a problem though. Im friends with alot of cops around here and all they all tell me the same thing, that its a stupid law and the cops refuse to enforce it unless they are short on their quota and need a reason to pull someone over.
