View Full Version : Do you think this is racist?

OK, here's the picture:

https://twitter.com/#!/GSElevator/status/151423147940380672/photo/1

Now, yes, it's a black couple. And the standard idea is, if you think it may be racist, then it probably is. But the joke of the picture is where the husband is, not the race of the husband. If the picture was of two white people, the joke would still be funny.

Thoughts?

For the record: I didn't ask if it was racist. I asked do YOU think it's racist.

I don't think it's racist for the sole reason that if you put a person of any color in the same situation, it's still funny. Therefore, not racist.

We've all seen this picture before:

http://s3-ec.buzzfed.com/static/imagebuzz/web03/2010/11/23/20/the-most-white-trash-family-photo-ever-taken-19376-1290562379-10.jpg

If they are black, is the picture still funny? Yes.

For example:

http://www.ghettoredhot.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/11/ghetto-pregnant-prom-dress.jpg

If she's white, is the picture still funny? Yes.

Now, the pictures are very INAPPROPRIATE. But it just shows where a line of race and how racism is portrayed can be.

This is all about context. Its not just "black picture"/"white picture".

The world isn't "equal" my friend.

The context of the picture is that a trashy couple took a highly inappropriate picture for their Christmas card.

You are putting in your own subtext that people are making fun of them because they are black.

And again: If white people were in this picture, the joke is still there.

The joke isn't "OH MY GOD THEY'RE BLACK" it's "OH MY GOD HE'S IN JAIL"

Just think of that creepy uncle/friend of the family everyone dodges at every get together/party bc his conversations always devolve into utter idiocy and pure nonsense. I was referring to Snack's post. He brought up the idea that someone was looking for a pic like this, and the only reason they picked that particular one, was because they couldn't find one like it of another race. It's an absurd scenario.

I didnt say someone was looking for said pic but they might have just come across this picture and it just so happened to be a black couple in it. The fact is this picture was posed for and taken by blacks you can say everything is racist. When people put themselves in these situations and then later on are made fun of how is it automatically racist? If you were friends with this couple and the girl posted this on her facebook page what would you say or do? would you not laugh, would you not show your other friends and say "look at the stupid picture she took with her boyfriend" etc? Of course you would so are you now racist for thinking this?

Oh and the person who emailed it to me was black and he got it because it was tweeted out by ochocinco and was trending a few weeks back. I just did a search on twitter for "ghetto xmas card" and the 1st 10 people who tweeted it are black. Its funny and about the picture not the color of the people.

If something like this had been posted with a readneck couple, it most likely would have been posted by a white person (and most likely a redneck). Though you see black comedians joking about whites and rednecks, there simply isn't a huge proliferation of Internet memes about whites that are created by blacks. The vast majority of degrading memes that feature blacks, are posted by racists. It simply doesn't work the other way around.

I brought up black comedians to begin with. The reason I did, is because the majority of the jokes they tell about white people, are told to a white audience! They get away with doing it, because of white guilt. Why is there white guilt? Because so many whites are inwardly racist, even though they want to pretend they aren't.

If white comedians could make massive amounts of money telling black jokes, they would. But the pic that started this thread had nothing to do with comedians.

Fair enough. I just asked a black female friend.

She did not know the picture in question, so I showed it to her. She laughed, and then I asked her if she felt it was racist. Her response:

No, I dont think so at all. I mean it's stereotypical, but there's no blatant racism such as the use of the word "n****r" or such.

And I think stereotypical is an excellent word to use in this situation. It is a stereotype, but using stereotypes does not always equal racism.
