i can't recall the brand. rca maybe? i can double check the make when i get home in the morning. i got it at bestbuy for 20 bucks about a year ago. they ranged in price from 20-100 and just got a cheap one to see if it would work at that broadcast range.

i was at best buy today checking them out,was it the square tile looking one? or a rabbit ears like looking one?
there are two towers one is 40 miles away and has NBC and ABC,the other is 70 miles away and has FOX and CBS so i wasnt sure if i needed to go the 150 outdoor antenna route

My dad uses an antenna to pick up a couple of stations that aren't on Comcast. The HD thing is right. It's more clear than the HD from cable.

i don't want to pay 100 bucks for cable a month and only be interested in a handful of channels. plus, i don't want to be stuck in a two year contract with a satellite company. i barely watch tv at home anyway as it is. my wife and i usually find more entertaining things to do than just sit around and stare at the tv.

I thought about doing this too. I read that over the air hd channels are actually clearer and better hd then from your cable provider because its a truer hd and that your cable provider compresses the signal. dont know if thats true or not but everyone i know who has done this says this and there are plenty of articles and reviews online that say the same thing. i just want to make sure i get a good enough antenna that picks up a great signal. i will def be doing this for the spare tv.

i have a 42 inch panasonic plasma and i've never seen a football game look better than what it does with my antenna. it's a 20 dollar antenna. depending on where you live in jersey, you might be able to pick up channels from both NYC and philly.

the only reason i still have it. and the shitty part is that its goin the wrong way. more games and shit are moving to cable from network. so over the next few years, people with antennas will get less and less live games, unless some cable networks start offering shit free over the air, which would cost them alot of money to do

i agree sports is what keeps lots of us. the good thing is basic cable for like $30 a month or basic satellite for $30 a month might have what i need. i only need espn, msg, and the yes network for sports. i like having the others but i only truly need my nfl games and nba games.

between abc/cbs/nbc on saturdays, there is always a good college football game to watch all day. sunday, cbs & fox (if in your area they still broadcast) for nfl. college basketball on cbs on weekends in winter and march madness. lots of golf on cbs and nbc. no baseball though unless you get fox with the sat game of the week. some nhl from here on out on nbc on sat.
but nothing at all during the week. which if you're trying to follow nhl, nba, mlb teams, it's impossible.

can you hide the antenna in a closet or behind the tv or does it have to be in the open? how does it plug into your tv? do these antennas have hdmi or coax connectors?
which one do you recommend?
weekapaugjz
01-05-2012, 12:23 PM
it all would depend on where the antenna got the best reception. i have mine on top of a speaker next to the window. i linked the one i have earlier in the thread and it's just a coax hookup. i'm know there are more expensive ones out there, they have several at best buy type stores, but this one works for me.

during the week is brutal. also, you only get parts of some shit. For one, i hate college basketball. the shot clock allows it to be way too slow and so i dont like to watch it unless its tourney time, and even them im casually observing the shit. and golf you get, but usually only like 3 hours on sat and sunday, and thats only like the biggest 15 or so tournies. Even the masters, the first 2 rounds are on ESPN now. TNT gets a bit of the PGA and shit. The british is mostly live on ESPN cause its weird hours, and by the time it comes on network you already know what happened. same with olympics and all that shit.
Not to mention, the weekdays are usually the times people most rely on their home tvs cause on the weekends, you arent working so you are usually doing shit, or can just go out to a bar or with friends to catch games, etc.

although mostly true, that internet stuff usually doesnt look great. Also, my internet is on a provider that doesnt allow espn3, so that option would be out for me. And its pretty tough recently to find american stuff other than the biggest of big games, at least on the internet sites i use, cause most of them are all europe

its not illegal to watch it you tool. its illegal for people to put it there.
basically its like how a 17 year old cant get in trouble for smoking (unless the town has some gay shit like Ridgewood) but the store that sold them gets in trouble.
ironically, in most states, NJ included, it works the same with betting. You are legally allowed to place bets in NJ with bookies on sports. there is nothing against that. Its just not legal for bookies to take the bets. So you cant get in trouble, but even still, alot of the sites dont have a ton of american sports cause that will get them shut down faster, and cause most of the people providing the streams are from europe.
next time you watch an ESPN football game on one of those sites, notice how its most likely from the ESPN America feed, which is ESPNs channel in England

Spy, I went through this a few years ago. The HD quality is better over the air on the local networks. But, I recommend spending a little more money on the antenna.
I used this one http://www.amazon.com/Antennas-Direct-ClearStream4-HDTV-Antenna/dp/B001BRXW74/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1325858201&sr=1-5
After going through the $20 route (and being aggravated) - I found this one and it worked great. You will need this type of antenna to pull in that tower from 70 miles away. Too bad I didnt know this day would come because I left it on my old house last year - or I would have given it to you.

if you get one of these can you connect it to more then 1 tv? if so then this is better because you wont have to buy multiple $20 units if you have multiple tvs and it will be hidden or outside rather then on or near the tv.

ya those are outdoor mutidirectional antennas that you aim at towers to get the best possible signal, you can find your towers with stations and degrees from your place at
http://transition.fcc.gov/mb/engineering/maps/ i'm doing it,for the price of one cable bill i can get better reception on the local channels than thru cable, just cant do it right now with the free showtime weekend, espn having 1 playoff game and what not

In my area we have 7 over the air digital HD broadcasters. I can recieve them all by using an indoor antenna set up on the windowsill. I bought the antenna at a local store for 35 bucks and it works great. The local stations air all the popular shows that I like to watch plus 2 of them air NFL games on Sunday. One station broadcasts a game at 11 am and the other broadcasts a differnt game at 3pm. You get a great picture and audio from the over the air broadcasters. I am on a tight budget and can't afford cable.

I didnt know the sabres were even on MSG up there. Down here they only have knicks rangers devils and islanders. And i have cablevision, so even if i wanted to, i could never get rid of MSG cause Cablevision owns it sorta*
* Cablevision used to own the knicks, rangers, the garden and all the channels. Charles Dolan, the owner of cablevision, split them off into a seperate company, MSG Enterprises, and gave it to james dolan. He is now tryin to sell Cablevision and give the money to his other kids who didnt want the company. And like any good businessmen, before they split it off, cablevision signed with MSG a 20 year deal or something to make sure it never lost money. Pretty slick actually.
Pepsi did that with Pizza Hut. They bought pizza hut, signed pepsi to an exclusive soda contract for all pizza huts, then they sold pizza hut to some other company.
anyway the point is Sabres arent on MSG here. The only time i ever turn on MSG is for knicks games. Im not a hockey guy anymore, but i used to watch the devils when i cared. Otherwise, the entire channel is awful shit. And Al Trautwig is a fag

you have to pay 7.99 a month for netflix. and to be honest, most of the shit they put online isnt that great. 90% of the movies i would search for would be DVD only and thats another 7.99 or so a month. So no. There is sites like the sports ones where people put up movies and tv shows and shit so you can find most of what you would want. Also, PM, i got a couple sites for you for sports, including your favorite that ICE shut down which they put back up with a new address

you have to pay 7.99 a month for netflix. and to be honest, most of the shit they put online isnt that great.
PM me some of those sites.

so on your MSG then, you would get the knicks and sabres instead of rangers and devils? You still have knicks?
yes, they have knicks games on.

ordered the clearstream2 and tivo premiere combo at BEST BUY today-100 bucks, deal last til saturday if anyone wants better reception and wants to cut their cable bill

is this the one you got? pretty good deal. i used to have tivo and loved it but i hated the connection and delay between the cable box and the cable box. this seems perfect but they raised the price to $20 a month, wtf? if i ever go this route and cancel fios i will have to go back to tivo because i dont know if i could watch tv without being able to pause or rewind something i missed.

Is there anything on the market that's similar to Slingbox? I like my sling, but I'm just curious.
I'm looking a way to send live broadcast content to my computer, cell, or iPad.
If the rumors are legit that iPad will have 4G, I'll want to upgrade.

explain to me how you do this? how can you use it as a dvr for free? it says right on the site that you cant access or use the dvr capabilities without paying the service fee. just yesterday you said you were waiting for tivo to download all the station information or something like that. how does it do that if you didnt pay a subscription fee?
if there is a way let me know because my old one is sitting around collecting dust. it also has some shows on it that last i checked wouldnt allow me to access them. whenever i tried to watch something after i cancelled my service it would pop up with something telling me services isnt paid or active etc.

i don't know havent recorded anything yet,i just set it to record the red wings/blackhawks game at 12 30 today, maybe cuz when it asked me if i wanted to set up tivo central i clicked "later" or i think its free if you hook it up to the internet and just use it as a reciever/dvr for broadcast channels,i'll tell you how the red wings game recording turns out tommorow

could be a free trial and maybe they will block you after 14 days or 30 days? definitley keep us updated because if it works as you say then thats a steal of a deal for $100. The only reason I have kept my old tivo and havent thrown it out or given it away yet is i want to put it on a spare tv and use it as a dvr but in the past when i have looked at how to do it nothing seems to work.

could be,i looked thru the instructions yesterday and it didnt say anything about a free trial, but even if it is 20 a month,i think it'll be worth it since it turns into a smartbox with all the extra internet stuff

I had to work last weekend and the t.v. at our office don't have cable or shit as we use it to show videos and DVDs to our clients. Thank god my brother still had the antenna and converter box because I brought that to the office and set it up to watch the Giant's game last week. Came out pretty clear.

i agree. it seems to do a lot and like i said i dont think i can watch tv without being able to rew or pause or even rec if not home. i have had tivo and now fios dvr for over 8 years now and i dont know how we ever did without this technology! think about all the times you watched something and you couldnt understand what they said? now you rewind 30 seconds until you understand it!

not trying to start a fight just wondering. do you watch anything but sports? yes i agree with you there will be times that i would go nuts with nothing to watch if i do this but i watch or at least like enough network tv that i wouldnt mind missing a baseball or basketball game. i dont watch hockey except in the playoffs and the nfl is always on network tv. i would actually miss having espn on in that back ground while i work and the nets games more then anything but i can always listen to sports radio for the same shit.

i do, but only cable shit. If there isnt a game on, ill mostly watch history, discovery and that kinda shit. Also, sadly, i still watch Jersey Shore and then sometimes i watch daily show and Colbert Report. Otherwise im usually either on the comp or out somewhere or playin PS3

yeah i do watch from time to time some cable shows but for the most part i watch network dramas and comedies. i like a few shows on usa, fx etc and would be pissed missing that but in this economy i understand why so many people are getting rid of cable.

i dont put on any channel below 27 if a sport isnt on. I dont watch any network shows. I will check out celeb apprentice but i watch it on the internet commercial free instead of while its on TV cause im at work. Otherwise, nothing at all from networks
and for some reason i still watch Hell's Kitchen. But its not on right now so.

from my experience my tivo unit wouldnt allow me to even view my old recordings so i doubt it will still work and allow you to record. even if it did allow you to record you wouldnt know what you are recording because the guides would no longer update. but keep us updated to know for sure.
