View Full Version : Stupid Super Bowl News
How about a thread dedicated to the useless media hype surrounding the Super Bowl.
Today I learned that Bill Belicheck won't be wearing the red hoodie during the game and the Senator John Kerry bet clam chowder vs NY Cheesecake from Sen Kirsten Gillibrand.
If you retweet the John Kerry news, make sure you use the #winitformyra hashtag.

No, it's not. He was saying the giants weren't going to get worked up over what Brady said. He was explaining you have to expect to win.
It is taken out of context here, but I read a prior article where it was shown to be in direct response to questions about Brady's comment.

I was kidding. It's a ridiculous article / video interview, and five minutes of my life wasted on listening to players repeating the same tired old lines.
Which is why I posted it in the "Stupid Super Bowl News" thread.
No shit they "expect to win". How is that newsworthy?

The reason why the NFL protects the Super Bowl trademark is because companies pay tons of money to be affiliated with the NFL. So it's not just the NFL, it's protecting those people who paid to get into "the club".
That said, you really aren't preparing for the Super Bowl until after Christmas. Nobody cares about the Super Bowl until January. That's why you never hear commercials or advertising mention it until a few weeks up to the game.

we are also talking about everything else as well. if you notice some media outlets, websites etc use the term "big game". no one seems to be allowed to say the words "Super bowl" at all during their broadcast or even tv shows themselves cant mention it. why would they care if a sitcom mentioned the super bowl?

That's a combination of over protective lawyers and Fair Use, pretty much.
When the NFL started cracking down, a lot of lawyers basically said "OH MY GOD DON'T USE SUPER BOWL WE'LL GET SUED" even though they had a right to say it.
You'll hear newscasts, etc. say "Super Bowl". But you won't hear it on say, for example, the Iron Chef Showdown in Hawaii. They specifically said "Big Game". But that's also because they're a cable network that's completely unaffiliated with the NFL, and ESPN may have a problem with that. Again, it's implying that their show is affiliated with the NFL when it's not.
I know the show King of Queens was quite visible with using NFL trademarks, but I'm not sure if the Super Bowl itself was ever mentioned. That's probably a combination of CBS owning rights to the NFL and permission to use the trademarks because the NFL is then getting free advertising.
"Bones" also uses NFL trademarks. I believe Booth is a Steelers fan and has a Terrible Towel in his office. But again, FOX has a NFL deal.

I thought hh Gregg recently skirted close to the line when they started airing ads for "Super Sale XLVI. They didn't say "bowl", but they had the same Roman numeral as the game.
