View Full Version : Biggest Disappointment in Entertainment

What, to you, was the biggest disappointment in entertainment (besides the Star Wars prequels)

To me, it was the failure of Heroes. For 20+ episodes, there was absolute fucking GOLD that had me glued to the TV every Monday night. Then, somehow, the buildup for the showdown with Sylar came - and it just completely fizzled out.

It never regained it's momentum after that.

It spent 3 more seasons limping along but it never re-captured the first 3/4 of that first season.

Exactly. Im not usually into sci fi shows but Heroes was the 1st sci fi, super hero show that I liked so now I watch a few shows like it. The 1st season was great but then 2nd season was a let down and I gave up on it half way through the 2nd season and never watched it again. I still have no idea what happened on that show or how it ended.

It's been a long time since I've been foolish enough to get my hopes up regarding anything vomited forth by the entertainment industry. But here's a few recent ones I came up with:

The dragons in A Game of Thrones

The last episode of The Killing

Lindsay Lohan's Playboy shoot

Duke Nukem Forever

Network TV.

Seriously, in days past we had X-Files then Lost, two shows which somehow transcended their corniness.

Now we've gone from Jericho to Grimm, Alcatraz, and The River. Such little respect for the audience.

John from Cincinnati and Studio 60 both being cancelled after 1 season. Loved both those shows and thought they deserved to be renewed!

The career of Kevin Smith. It's sad to see the guy who showed so much promise after "Clerks" reduced to a seeming parody of himself, constantly smoking dope and losing himself in self-indulgence, churning out shit like "Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back" and "Jersey Girl".

I was hopeful that "Red State" might be his attempt to pull himself out of that and really do something new, but holy fuck did that movie suck donkey dicks.

King Kong (2005)

it has some faults, and a lot of drawn out bullshit, but king kong was light years better than the 1998 version of godzilla, another classic monster movie. for the most part, i liked king kong.

my vote: avatar

there had been rumors of the movie for years saying how cameron was going to blow the roof off movie making with this film. while i will give it that it was pretty visually stunning, the story itself was just so brutally bad. plus, because of it's success with 3D, we are getting are constantly inundated with 3D bullshit with fucking EVERYTHING.

that sums it up for me.

Also i liked Prison Break, but that fell off for me as well. that should have been a british show, 2 quick seasons.

Also, I am starting to watch Luck, which I was very excited for. Love horse racing, like Dustin Hoffman... it blows so far.

Edit: LOST!!

I loved the first season, and then it just went off the fucking wall for me couldn't stay with it.

Same with Soprano's, I never even finished the Series.

When lost first started i thought it was going to be a show about a plane crash and them stranded on a deserted island. i wasnt expecting a sci fi show about a magical, mystical island. i stopped watching quickly.

Im with you on Luck, I was very excited but its been all over the place. Im still going to watch it because I think it will get better and the problem might be they are trying to set up a lot fo stories so its fucking with the flow. It seems like it will catch a groove (at least I hope so)

The Sopranos did fall off a bit in the middle of the series but I stuck with it for the entire run and did love the entire series when it was all said and done!

Well put. I lost interest in Kevin pretty quickly after Jay & Silent Bob Strike Back, but I discovered SModcast around '08 and quickly became addicted to it. Then Zack & Miri failed to the Apatow business that Kevin was expecting, so he turned into a stoner, which caused his podcast to take an extreme nosedive in quality.

Also, I'll submit that pretty much everything Weezer has done since 1996 has been pretty disappointing.

On the TV side:

Having Bored to Death get cancelled was/is a serious fuck-up by HBO. That show was a minor classic.

Have to second the disappointment on The Killing. That started out so strong but the adapters must have felt they needed to cheese up the ending for the American audience - which is also true, to a lesser extent, of Homeland.

In the "wanted to like it better than I did" category I've got Enlightened. Laura Dern is a very good actress, there's a good cast and the idea of having a flawed, annoying female protagonist was a great concept but the show just kind of sits there.

To respond to something mentioned in the first post of this thread: the Star Wars prequels didn't disappoint me, because I was pretty much expecting them to be dogshit. It just seemed absolutely useless, a project that had no reason for being. Just something that couldn't really go anywhere good.

A sci-fi series that did truly disappoint me: Star Trek Voyager. The setting gave them a chance to do some wild, truly interesting stuff, and go someplace new with the Star Trek theme. You're stranded tens of thousands of light years from the Federation, so no one can help you. The crew is half and half Starfleet and a terrorist organization that hates the Federation. It should be a brutal struggle for survival. Soon, though, it settled into the same patterns of any other Star Trek series. Plus, they managed to make the Borg lame.

a kind of newer one, Up All Night on NBC.

I think Will Arnett is hysterical, and I thought the show would work. the problem, for me, was Mya Rudolf. she is terrible, I don't like her in anything.

Good call on Studio 60! What a shame. What a letdown!
I think that show, above all others, had potential for greatness. It could and SHOULD have gone on for 10 years. It had unlimited potential for guest stars, "ripped from the headlines" plots, and it was uniquely qualified to deliver the true dish on hollywood/tv/movies/showbusiness. What a shame that the show didn't catch on. (and I haaaated the way they re-tooled it for the 2nd half of the 1st season. It was like suddenly watching a different show. Boo.)

Actually, now that I think about it, the departure of ESD was an unparalleled disappointment. The show used to be one of the few reasons to get out of bed in the morning, but after Dave left, it became more of a burdensome chore than anything else.

-Twin Peaks. Everything that occurs after the reveal of the killer and before the last episode.
-Weezer's post-Pinkerton return (I had never waited for something with so much anticipation)
-Seeing The Fall live in 2005. I left after 4 songs.
-The silence of the J.D Salinger Estate in the time since his death. What will be published posthumously and when?

me too. I originally found it odd that they had 2 new series with the same idea but 1 being a 60 min dramody and the other being a 30 min comedy. I never watched 30 rock (maybe 2 or 3 eps and didnt like it) but i loved studio 60.

How did Kim even get famous after that sex tape? Not only was everything you wanted to see barely shown for more then a few seconds. She was actually a terrible fuck.

Yeah, when they added BSG to Netflix, I realized I was hesitant to watch it because I didn't want to get invested in it all over again and watch it turn to dogshit before my eyes.

I might just watch the first season again and stop there.

It spent 3 more seasons limping along but it never re-captured the first 3/4 of that first season.

Heroes felt like a bad relationship - it started out so well, but then ... hispanic wonder twins ... lack luster stories/people ... never answering questions that were pretty important to an ever-changing timeline.

Exactly. Im not usually into sci fi shows but Heroes was the 1st sci fi, super hero show that I liked so now I watch a few shows like it. For some reason, i pushed through the second season because I heard that the 3rd season was going to be crazy ... it wasn't, nor was the 4th season (i must have been one of 5 people to have stayed that long)

My biggest entertainment disappointments:
-Heroes from season 2 on
- Avatar: the Last Airbender movie (the show was pretty good/interesting and destroyed by a narcissistic "director")
- the second half of LOST
- the Daria series coming out on DVD without any of the soundtrack that made it really entertaining
- every remake of a great film by making it "urban" and minority friendly
- Alien 3
- the increasingly poor decisions of todd margaret (i really tried, but I don't think Will Arnett could save it)
- most of MTV
- the Wire not receiving one award

the cancellations:
- Upright Citizens Brigade
- Arrested Development (thankfully, it's coming back, but still)
- Community (tech it's on hiatus, i believe, but still - fuck NBC)
- Stella
- Jericho
- The Job
- Kings
