View Full Version : GLAAD vs. Kirk Cameron

Kirk Cameron is a well-known documented douche in Hollywood, who basically destroyed his own mainstream career when he became a born again Christian and started making unreasonable demands over plots in Growing Pains towards the end of the show's run.
He then made his career starring in direct-to-video Christian features like "Left Behind" and similar fare.
But the two things going into this are to know:
1) Kirk Cameron is an extreme religious zealot
2) He's got no pull in Hollywood.
So Kurt appears on Piers Morgan's show on CNN. And he basically comes out against gay marriage and equality. Given point #1, THIS SHOULD SHOCK NO ONE.
And of course, GLAAD, whose message has become more muddled, less effective, and quite honestly, more bullying, goes crazy.
Now remember point #2. He's NOBODY at this point. The only people who care about him are his base that support the Christian direct-to-video movies.
So GLAAD comes out with this fantastic statement:
A GLAAD spokesman says they plan on monitoring Cameron's media bookings and various acting gigs to ensure "the news and entertainment industry is aware of his outrageous anti-gay views.
So GLAAD has become so out of touch they don't realize that Cameron is a nobody, the news is well-aware of how he feels about gays (THAT'S WHY THEY PUT HIM ON!) and the entertainment industry doesn't want anything to do with Cameron anyway, and what GLAAD is doing is basically making Cameron a martyr to the far right.
Way to go, GLAAD. Way. to. go.
Why give him any credibility? Why even comment on it? Why act like he's the biggest problem America has?
I agree but all these special interest groups do is monitor the media and report objectionable content. If they fail to report even the smallest celebrity slam, they look like douches (or more like douches than normal ).

How many super religious people are in favor of gay marriage? I don't get why they are shocked and have to cause an uproar when the story would never see the light of day or be forgotten within days.

If anything, Rick Santorum represents 1000 percent more threat than Kirk Cameron ever does. And they don't NEED to report on it. They WANT to report on it.
The interesting thing is this. Cameron's views on homosexuality are based in his religion. So isn't GLAAD basically doing some sort of anti-Christian bullying here? There are no winners in this situation.

BINGO.
Then there's this quote from GLAAD that blows my mind:
"Herndon Graddick, Senior Director of Programs at GLAAD, tells TMZ he feels Cameron, a Born Again Christian, is "out of step with a vast majority of Americans, particularly people of faith who believe that their gay and lesbian brothers and sisters should be loved and accepted based on their character and not condemned because of their sexual orientation."
Wait. WHAT? Did GLAAD just say that a majority of very religious people are totally OK with gay people and gay equality?

No they said people of faith. And they are right. Im catholic and have no problem with gay people or gay equality. Pretty much every catholic I know feels the same way, with maybe the exception of my mom. Now dont get me wrong, most of these people arent diehards or even regularly practicing. But they do the little things. Church here and there, trying not to eat meat on Fridays, shit like that. And they do consider themselves Catholics. Yet thats how they feel.
More and more people are starting to mix in their common sense with their religious beleifs. There are still plenty that follow that bible to the letter, but there is ALOT of people of faith out there that still consider themselves Catholics or whatever, while disagreeing with some of the churches teachings. Its pretty much something Ive been doing since I was a kid. Call it selective believing or whatever you want, it doesnt matter, theres plenty of people like that out there.

they are right, as more and more conservative/religious people realize they have family members who are gay the more accepting they become.

Kirk Cameron single-handedly disproved evolution, so maybe we should listen to what he has to say on this. He seems like a pretty shart guy.
EDIT: Yeah it's a typo, but I think it fits.

this
and do you really think this is big news? come on man, it's what GLAAD does and they don't care how big you are, they just want news and to make examples of people who go at them
no big deal or surprise

That should take a staff of one to be able to do that.

Wait, his name is GRAD-DICK?
Anyway, if these religious types really want to punish gays, then they should encourage them to get married. Then they can go through divorces (with the inevitable lawyers and courts and alimony) and they'll be miserable and complain about it for the rest of their lives.

Bullying? Here's how I envision any conversation about this going:
Gay person: I'm going to get married!
Christian: Not so fast sport, my God says you're an abomination, despite the fact that he also loves all of his children... he's a complicated guy. Anyway, you can't get married.
Gay person: What? Why?
Christian: Well the whole aforementioned God thing, plus if we let you have a basic human right that's fundamental towards that whole "pursuit of happiness" thing what's next, men marrying dogs?
Gay person: No, I think we can keep this to humans. Wait, did you just imply that I'm on the level of a dog?
Christian: It doesn't matter, long story short, gay marriage makes baby Jesus cry so you can't do it.
Gay person: That's bullshit!
Christian: War on religion! I'm being oppressed!

But in this situation, two wrongs do not make a right.
My issue with GLAAD is there's a bunch of different ways they could have worded the release. The threat is unnecessary.

Cameron's a douche and he's wrong but it's nice to see someone refuse to apologize.
Also, I rather enjoyed Vice Versa, but that was mostly because of the presence of Dudley Moore.

Kirk Cameron
I recently was asked to join Piers Morgan on CNN for an interview about my new film “Monumental.” During that discussion, I was asked to express my views about homosexuality, gay marriage, and abortion. While that was not the agreed-upon purpose of the interview, I was pleased to answer Piers’ questions as honestly as I could. In some people’s eyes, my responses were not sufficiently "loving" toward those in the gay community. I can only say that it is my life's mission to love all people, and that I expressed the same views that are expressed clearly and emphatically throughout the Judeo-Christian scriptures. As a Bible believing Christian, I could not have answered any other way. I’ve been encouraged by the support of many friends (including gay friends, incidentally) in the wake of condemnation by some political advocacy groups. In the case of one of my gay friends, we regularly talk and have healthy and respectful debate. We learn from each other, and serve others alongside one another. I thank God for all of my friends...even when they hold very different views on issues of faith and morality. I do not, however, believe that the right way to advance our views is to resort to name-calling and personal attacks, as some have done to me. I also believe that freedom of speech and freedom of religion go hand-in-hand in America. I should be able to express moral views on social issues--especially those that have been the underpinning of Western civilization for 2,000 years--without being slandered, accused of hate speech, and told from those who preach "tolerance" that I need to either bend my beliefs to their moral standards or be silent when I’m in the public square. I hope more than a few people could see the large volume of secularist morality being imposed on me. In any society that is governed by the rule of law, some form of morality is always imposed. It's inescapable. But it is also a complicated subject, and that is why I believe we need to learn how to debate these things with greater love and respect. To the thousands of you who have written me letters of encouragement... thank you! And to those who would like know how to further your support, please gather your friends and family, and join me as I seek to show you our true “National Treasure,” at the live, nationwide viewing of “Monumental” on Tuesday, March 27th (www.MonumentalMovie.com). I don't like Kirk Cameron, I think he picks and chooses things to believe. That being said, he's entitled to his beliefs and that was his point. He's not afraid of homosexuals, he just doesn't believe they will go to Heaven. If you don't believe in Heaven, or just don't believe as he believes, he still has a right to it--and more importantly, why does anyone care?

Smart kid. I love the fact he didnt apologize and backpedal. The guy has an opinion, whether you agree with it or not, people should respect him being honest with his opinions. Its not like hes going out of his way trying to attack gay people. He was a guest on a show, was asked a question, and answered it honestly. Now people want him to go out and apologize and lie by saying hes changed his view. I never understood how people could get satisfaction from someone saying they agree with their viewpoint when its obvious they dont.
Then again these are the same people that take forced apologies and act like they are sincere.

I was never a fan of that either. There are alot of people out there that dont like gay people because they are scared of what they dont understand, but not everyone that hates gays are afraid of them. Thats just some stupid stereotype society uses as some kind of comeback for gay insults or what they perceive to be gay insults.
If someone doesnt like black people, they arent called a negrophobe (real word), they are called a racist. Yet if someone doesnt like gay people its just automatically assumed they are scared of them. Its just silly.

The really ironic thing here is that the actor is so religious that when he was a teen heartthrob (a couple of decades ago) he used to insist that any dialogue that was even the slightest bit sexual or profane be removed from his lines because they violated his sense of decency. bigotry is fueled by ignorance AND fear. simple as that, pal.
Ive never seen it, I just assumed.
But my point is its not always fear. Its not. There are just some hateful motherfuckers out there. They arent afraid of different races, or sexualities or religions...they just dont like things different from what they are. I see it all the time. I know racists that are NOT scared of black people. They just dont like them. These are the kind of guys that dont lower their voice or look around when dropping an N bomb. And have no problem confronting them or starting shit.
I know guys like this that are the same way with gays. They are ignorant, hateful mean spirited scumbags. But they sure as fuck arent afraid of these people. Thats my point.
And for the record, this is the textbook definition of the word racism...
1.
the belief that races have distinctive cultural characteristics determined by hereditary factors and that this endows some races with an intrinsic superiority over others
2.
abusive or aggressive behaviour towards members of another race on the basis of such a belief
Nowhere in that definition is the word fear. Unlike the definition of the word Homophobia.

This is an argument of semantics and could go on forever. I can see that you would rather make assumptions and attempt insults rather than have an intelligent discussion so this will be my last words to you on the matter.
I agree that a racist is someone who hates other races. That hatred, though, comes from fear. Fear that another race may, in fact, be superior or that another race may gain superiority.

you know a lot of people!
I worked at a restaurant that had a revolving door of 500 employees for 10 years. Ive worked with literally thousands of people over that time. Thats not counting my other 8 years in the business. I have seen, talked to, and had to work with just about everything under the sun. Yes, I do know alot of people.

Crispy, you're not listening to anyone at all. Several people have told you about others whom they actually know, and you just keep coming back with "fear." Shouting the same word over and over is not a rational way to argue a point.

You weren't harsh at all. Your argument was based on people you know. It was well-written and intelligent. I think I'd just leave it.

I agree. That's exactly why I said it is a matter of semantics and I want to drop it. I stated my position and backed up my argument with my opinion. Neither of us are psychic or even psychiatrists and it is purely conjecture what the motives for other peoples beliefs and actions are.
I think I explained myself well and I am not trying to change anyone's opinion. I don't agree with TS and he doesn't agree with me, no big deal.

I agree, it wasn't harsh and my feelings were not hurt. I was merely pointing out Skeets childish attempts at being insulting.
