The problem with the idea of encouraging kids that they should be tougher is that being in public schools in the US is like living in a prison. You cannot escape a major problem without tattling, resulting to violence, or having parents who live autonomously enough that they can move at the drop of a hat when shit gets heated. To review:

1) Tell on the bully.
2) Fight.
3) Move in with your auntie and uncle in Bel-Air.

its funny that you say this because a lot of public schools (especially in nyc) are being called "pipelines to prisons".

my wife is a teacher in elementary schools and said they would have almost no boys in school if they suspended for pretend shooting (with fingers, sticks, etc.)...

Fez is wrong...that is not a safety issue, at all

It wasn't that long ago, but I was teaching in a country where hiring a lawyer on contingency was not an option. If a parent wanted to get revenge on a teacher, he or she would simply complain to the PTA or the Board of Education. In the case of people in their final years of teaching, they knew that even if they were taken out of a school or fired they were still legally entitled to their pensions. Teachers younger than 55 wouldn't dream of raising their hands toward a student.

The kid should've toughened up.

I remember getting in a fight with a kid in the second grade and I kicked the kid in the face breaking his nose. It freaked me out and since then, I will not engage in a fight for ANY reason.

Come to think of it, they probably were. A lot of parents are timid around teachers because they have the respect that we Americans used to have for teachers.

Today, I have to deal with people crying to me because I am too much of a jerk to give their 55% average kid enough extra credit a D.

I know a teacher who was fired for playing hangman at a school where a kid committed suicide by hanging. Of course, he was told, "Don't play hangman, it is somewhat politically insensitive to do it at a school where a kid actually hung himself on campus."

I was a professor at a Christopher Newport University for 10 years (10 years ago, too) and I was shocked at the lack of respect Freshman brought with them...they seemed to get better as upper classman (or maybe the bad attitudes failed out)

I do respect my kids' teachers and coaches, but that would be out the window if any of them assaulted either of my kids. A person who would do that does not deserve any respect.

I understand where Ron is coming from when he is critical about people who maintain ties to their high school friends, but I don't think keeping in touch is unusual. More often than not (from my experience) people who don't ditch their old friends maintain an unchecked self-esteem because they have a bad day at school or work and then get the ego-stroke from their Facebook friends. I think, if anything, there needs to be a period of your life where you are pulled away from your hometown and placed in another situation with other people to really gain some life experience.

Not wanting to trade blows with a bully, not abnormal and not bad.
