I've actually heard that before. I always thought you were just supposed to use your imagination and it could be anything you wanted it to be. But that explanation made so much sense.

It is supposed to be his soul...some ole story from years ago said that the devil removed your soul through the back of your neck, hence the band aid at the back of his neck. The punks at the beginning were supposed to be the deiverers of his soul to the devil. That is why there is the "divine intervention", to save Marsellus' soul. Once the soul is returned, he regains his compassion. That is why he gives freedom to Bruce Willis. (Well that is one reason and the other being that Bruces' character prevented Marsellus' buttfucking...)

I heard something similar, but slightly different. Everything about losing his soul was the same, but the only difference was that it had to do with ancient egyptian gods, and not the devil. I think the main idea behind this urban movie legand was that Marsellus Wallace was played by Ving Rhames, and there's an egyptian god named Rhames (or something similar to that spelling).
of course that's just me...I could be wrong.
