Great, Nerdvana commentary going on this one:

Cool! Thanks for the links, Further. Should we start a collection for when DS goes blind from looking at the sun with only two cheap pair of sun glasses to protect his eyes?

I've been trying to figure out why people claim that they find this fascinating.
I've narrowed it down to two possibilities:
1) Residual patriotic chauvinism. The moonshot was such a moment of orgasmic nationalistic ecstasy, that any excuse to crane one's head to the skies and go "oooh, aaah" is enough rouse some cheap tribal pride.
2) Science so simple, even they can understand it. Dumb people love an opportunity to seem less dumb. "Oh, did you watch the Venus Transit? It won't happen again until 2117. It happens due to orbits. ORBITS! See, I have interests besides Dancing With The Stars."

Yeah, some people enjoy seeing something they've never seen before. I didn't care about looking at it directly, but the videos NASA put up were really cool.

You're right. There is nothing cool about a black dot. A black dot that happens to be our sister planet. Nothing cool about seeing that traveling across a star 93 million miles away and giving some perspective about our place in the universe.
Nothing cool about an event that brought together the world's greatest minds and explorers around the world in the 1700's for humankinds first international collaberation. Who cares what it may have looked like for them?
Measuring the distance between us and Venus, us and the Sun? Meh, a good guess is a good as any.
Being able to more accurately sail the globe and survey our solar system? Dead reckoning worked for centuries, why make things easier?
And now, with even more technology available, this rare occurance will give us data to help pinpoint other planets around other stars with even more accuracy?
Nah, who needs that headache?
Black dot. What a bunch of hooey.

Far from it. Just what I learned over the past month. I did have to look up the distance to the sun though. I could have sworn it was 97 million.
