We need a nice place to post the goings on with the quickly deteriorating right wing side of the GOP.
So here's a fun thread for all that to live on for prosperity.
No abortions here...except for their policy beliefs and the pseudo lives they live so pure.
I'll start, here's some fun with cult-like hero/almost deity Reagan.
Taylor made fun! (http://www.nydailynews.com/news/national/liz-taylor-love-romps-article-1.1181033)
At least Kennedy didn't fake his morals and live a completely different life. I guess it's a shock at this point a GOP moral fiber guy didn't end up being bi or gay at this point. So there's that.

I was just watching some interview with Romneys sister. (what a hideous looking ghoul)
It was hilarious.
She said Mitt was utterly shocked that he lost.
Are facts this lost on this party?
I understand thinking anything can happen and you have a shot. But shocked that you lost?
The funniest shit she said was the media made little stories like the dog one big because they did not have anything bad to say about him.
God what a fantasy land these people live in.

In the series of articles about Romney not writing a concession speech they detail the tracking and polls his campaign was following, in most cases they disregarded the public or news polls and stuck to their own formulas. It came across to me as a "The emperor has no clothes" type of situation.

It's just amazing how that whole "fuck the facts, we know better" mentality went all the way to the top of that campaign. Apparently everyone in the campaign, up to Romney himself, believed this whole "skewed polls" narrative that the right wing came up with to explain how, even though they'd spent the last 4 or 5 years talking about what a socialist fascist Islamic terrorist-loving disaster of a president Obama has been, he was leading in the polls. They've gotten so used to living in this echo chamber that they've just started rejecting anything that doesn't agree with the story they want to hear.

Ive heard everything from Blaming Christie for working with Obama in a bi partisan way to the storm itself.
Mitt Lost because his ground game blew. He got 3 million less votes than McCain did in 2008. Another factor is that the campaigned overplayed the 1st debate. Plouffe, Axelrod, Messina et al targeted those swing states and were able to win 8 of 9. With an anemic recovery at best and a less than stellar 1st term to the Obama campaigns credit thry outwitted Romney and clearly were the better strategists
The talkers if they keep it up might have Christie pull a Charlie Crist

I would bet Obama himself/team/writers actually wrote a concession speech for fuck's sake. Yet why believe polls and the general media. At this point, if the news isn't favorable to their side, it's a main stream media bias and they convince themselves everything but the actual information.

and to be honest, I actually agree on the over valuing the first debate in SOOOO many ways. they played the next to safe (especially the third) and never admitted when beaten or off which was the COMPLETE contrast of the Dems. Obama and crew admitted to an awful first debate and found a way to rebound AND write off the first one at the same time. To me, this underlies the reality problem and disparity difference with fact with each party. One adjusts, the other convinces itself IT'S GONNA BE OK! instead of making changes, adjustments and being honest, they even lie to themselves

Learned alot while talking to my wifes uncle today. He owns his own insurance business and is a self made millionaire. First thing I asked him...
"So is this re-election going to cost you alot of money?"
His answer? "Not really."
He explained how they already pay healthcare for their workers and how Obamacare will actually wind up benefitting him as his costs already go up 8-15% a year now. He doesnt expect it to make healthcare that much more affordable but capping what the insurance companies can make benefits the consumers overall. He voted for Obama.
Then he was telling me how all his clients HATE Obama. And the reason he was scared about this election was because even though he didnt know Romney personally, he knew plenty of his clients, people worth $30 and $40 million did know him and worked with him in the past. And he explained how the greediest ones, the ones that didnt give a fuck about anything or anyone but their own pocket, were the ones that wanted him elected the most.
The Papa Johns situation is a perfect example of this. This motherfucker owns a 40,000 square foot castle, yet hes now saying publicly hes going to cut his employees hours so they get under 30 a week in order to get out paying their healthcare. This is after he did the math and had said he could pay it if he raised his prices by 14 cents a pizza. We discussed this and my wifes uncle was just blown away by how stupid a move this was from a PR and business standpoint. He explained how it wouldve been smarter to just say "Hey, we are going to raise our pizza prices 14 cents, but it will help allow us to profide healthcare to millions of American workers." Who really gives a fuck about 14 cents??? Instead he comes off as a greedy uncaring scrooge like asshole. The bad publicity is sure to cost them a ton of business. I just dont get the mentality.

See that I dont understand. Because honestly its the same shit as Dominos and Pizza Hut. Personally I feel anyone that lives above Virginia and eats that slop is a retard. But I can guarantee they will never get a dime from me.
Heres the part I really dont get though. This is something else I talked about with my wifes uncle. That business only makes about 3% profit according to some article I read somewhere and am currently too lazy to source. If their profit margins are indeed that slim reducing costs in this manner is de rigueur for large businesses. The reasoning is that if you know a specific resource is going to cost you more in the future than it does today you will try to avoid that cost. For growing businesses that often means adding contractors or off-shore people as opposed to hiring against a headcount, for existing/troubled businesses that means reducing staff to bring profits up enough to save the rest of the company.
Point is, healthcare is part of a number of problems that cause companies to avoid hiring full timers. In my experience there is little to no change pre and post Obamacare to that. I think we have a much bigger entitlement and education issue in this country when it relates to employees than we do a healthcare costs issue. Hiring a full time employee is like hiring a hand grenade. The pin may stay in and work well for 20 years getting a 5% raise every year, or the pin may get pulled and suddenly you're being held up for a 20% raise every year or IP walks.
Outside of completely idiotic comments made to the press this looks to me like the unfortunate and ugly but understandable portion of business nobody likes to talk about that their CEO for some reason decided would be best wrapped in a crazy political message.

Going under 30 hours a week no longer helps businesses from having to pay for healthcare. Under the AHA, it counts total hours worked, not hours worked per employee. Two employees working 20 hours a week counts as one full time employee. If you employee 50 or more "employees" (2000 total hours worked a week, split up no matter under how many employees), you have to offer insurance to all your employees.

looks like somewhere between 4 - 5% (http://ycharts.com/companies/PZZA/profit_margin)
Which is a pretty average profit margin for a company. If they were making a 10% profit margin, it would immediately be put back into the company.

Some sort of blame should be put on the feds for not thinking or being naive that CEO's would find an end around to Obamacare. Not saying that its right or wrong per se but these businesses hire tons of tax lawyers and accountants just to find these loopholes/end arounds to that they dont have to comply
It will be the same for income taxes if they go back up to 39.5% There are going to be new deductions. They might be cunning vindictive SOB's but they arent stupid.

I don't disagree, but only from a management perspective. The first part of your argument boils down to chicken or the egg. Without the person who started the business nobody has a job at it, without the people doing the work the business doesn't succeed.
From a management view there's very little proven efficacy to increasing wages beyond what is considered reasonable for the market. In essence people want to get paid what they think is fair and you will get poor workers below that number, but once you hit and exceed whatever that amount is the influence of money on performance is less important (and in some cases inverted, where paying more results in worse performance). Once you get to that line autonomy and perks are more important to improving performance. Daniel Pink wrote a book called Drive! that's all about this. I started implementing some of those ideas with my teams and have seen huge improvements in productivity that we could have never gotten by just overpaying.
Obviously this gets lost in most large companies but the single most important thing I've found is exactly what you're getting at: As a boss I personally am invested in seeing my team succeed in their careers. As an employee my company is invested in MY success. Granted Software Development is far different than a fast food pizza restaurant, but just treating the guy at the bottom of the totem pole like they're important makes them act like they're important, which naturally leads to them BEING important.
I was looking forward to more use of coal energy. Shucks.
Neither party will openly admit that the coal industry is screwed. There are very, very few countries that want anything to do with the logistical and sanitary issues related with mining, transporting, and burning coal. I think the industry should be partially subsidized in the event that other energy sources begin to wain, but the coal industry, Mitt Romney, and Barack Obama are openly lying to each other about the viability of the industry.
Both parties refused to tell those coal miners that the industry cannot be saved due to the value of the coal miner vote.

Stick with me, i'm not just whining here:
Earlier this year I got my first cluster headache, since then i've endured two cycles of 8 weeks each of what are considered to be one of the most painful conditions a human being can endure. They have no risk of death except that many people commit suicide rather than face the next headache.
They feel like someone trying to ram a railroad spike down through the top of your head. The entire left side of my face droops when one is coming, during a cycle I am woken up every day at 3 AM with a headache.
I live my life during those 2 months in unrelenting fear of the next attack, outside of a cycle I live in fear of the next one. I have to plan my life around the headaches. By the time the end of the cycle comes around I've retracted from everyone around me, and when I do interact I'm a complete and utter asshole because I've either been in extreme pain very recently or I'm afraid of the next time i'm going to be. Nobody except my wife and doctor have seen me during an active headache, the pain is too humiliating.
There are a ton of treatments out there, but it's a crapshoot what will work for each person, if anything. Treatments can vary from reasonable to obscenely expensive, but none of that matters because I would gladly trade any one of my limbs if it meant a permanent cure.
Here's where I'm going with all of this...
I used to think healthcare was not a right. To be honest with you I still can't say that I think it IS, but regardless, the promise of ANY treatment working one day is the one thing I focus on to get me through a headache. That hope doesn't exist without access to medical professionals who can help. To think that there are a huge number of people out there who can't have that moment of solace, and much worse, that I have actually argued against it in the past, makes me fucking sick with myself.
I get all the arguments about not being able to pay, I don't have answers for that, maybe we cut the 1 trillion dollar defense budget, or maybe we just say "Fuck it", roll the dice and hope that we figure something out to pay for it all because the alternative just isn't worth the cost.

No CEO has ever set a target of "pretty average" and kept their job very long. That said, I have nowhere near enough information to have an informed opinion about whether they're in the right or wrong on this.
Apparently you missed the 2nd part of my comment.
If a company has a higher profit margin, they usually pump it right back into the company. Having a 10% profit margin doesn't mean the CEO and the board get to keep it. It's just money that's sitting out there. They pump it back into the company, whether with expansion or higher salaries for the executive or workers. This then makes the profit margin go way down, closer to 5%.
Small, private, non-incorporated companies may run higher than that, as the owner just keeps the profit. But a large, incorporated company? That money is spent.

Every company I've worked for (they've been expanding companies, so perhaps my view is warped) has put their "margin" back into the business, either as investments, improvements or salaries. I can't imagine Papa Johns sitting on huge reserve. It serves them no purpose. I would assume they use virtually all their extra margin to expand or get bigger pay days, hence the 5% or under. Anytime they have extra money, they're doing the only things their company can do with the money; expand or pay their executives more.
I guess maybe they'd build a reserve in order to buy a competitor, but I think only Dominoes is their real competitor.
Jesus, you know what, I'm no WF. I'll admit when I'm wrong. I was way off on this. I just looked up Domino's profit, and it's sitting near 30%. That seems RIDICULOUSLY high, but even other companies are over 10%.

UD, it's how we all learn and expand our knowledge. No big deal as you wrote what you believed and some showed it was off. I only get this bc in my industry cash/capital is a huge upside in the company's flexibility to outright buy/acquire what they need, when they need it, and it has a HUGE impact on the stock price/dividends. So some of what you talk of is right in giving back, yet a lot isn't immediate (acquisitions/investments and dividends) over time.

To be honest, the crazy part for me wasnt that Papa Johns was talking about cutting back hours to try and avoid paying healthcare, it was the fact he felt the need to say this publicly when he had already gone on record as saying they could completely pass the cost on by raising the price of their pizzas 11-14 cents. From purely a business standpoint I find this to be beyond dumb.
I know you think alot of people dont care when it comes to this, and personally Ive always said this country is way to lazy and selfish to really boycott anything, but I really feel with this its an issue that can hurt them. Simply because there are SO many choices out there for what they sell. Pizza places are everywhere. Ive lost count of the comments Ive seen on FB where they just said "Oh well, looks like Ill just throw that menu out." making it pretty easy to boycott their product. I myself have a bag with about 25 pizza places that deliver to my area. If I want to boycott a place I toss the menu and POOF my business to them is gone.

Brilliant. Its also amazing how some of these big companies forgot what helped them get that big. I can give one prime example. I worked for Dave and Busters for 10 years. When I started there in 1994 they had a total of 5 stores. 2 in Dallas, 1 in Houston, 1 in Atlanta and 1 in Philly. The company was small but already worth millions. They had 500 employees just at our Philly store. The first 5 years I was there, they treated their employees just like a mom and pop type place would.
Vacations would go like this: After 1 year you got 1 week paid. After 2 years you got 2 weeks paid. After 5 years you got 3 weeks paid.
Christmas bonuses would be an envelope of cash that would increase according to how many years you were at the company.
2 Christmas and Summer parties for employees each year (on adjacent days so if you were guaranteed to be off for at least one) along with an employee Halloween party. All open bar.
Company sponsored softball, soccer, and billiards teams for employees.
They had a healthcare plan for anyone working over 30 hours a week.
I would personally see Buster fly up from Dallas for meetings with his management team go around talking to busboys, waiters, bartenders and barbacks thanking them for the great job they were doing and pat them on the back. It was some incredibly impressive shit.
This company had some of the most loyal and hardworking people Id ever seen working there. They took legitimate pride in the store, how it looked and how it ran. Ive never seen a bar whos employees were so proud of their work, and still havent in the 18 years since I started. Ive also never seen a bar where employees moved up so quickly and stayed employed there for so long. The bar business usually has a high turnover rate, especially chain restaurants. At one point our bar staff had 22 people on it, 20 of which had been employed there 8 years or more. Astounding. It showed in the business too. The place was packed every night with an awesome crowd of people. A bartender and waiters dream crowd. It was a real hot spot.
In I believe 2001 the company went public and downhill it went. At this point I dont know how many stores they had but it was a shitload. They were making more money than ever. Our store had just broken sales records 3 years in a row. Then policies started changing.
Vacations now were earned by hours worked over the course of the year. The math worked out to the point where you had to work 40 hours a week, for 52 weeks to earn one week of paid vacation. Most bar employees will tell you thats near impossible. Most bar employees dont usually work more than 35 hours a week simply because of the time of their shifts and the fact overtime is not allowed.
Christmas bonuses were now a D & B Power Card worth about $20 of free games.
No more Halloween or Christmas parties. The summer party would be one night, and it was cash bar.
In order to be eligible for healthcare you had to work over 35 hours a week. EVERY week. Again, something that was just rare.
The company still sponsored a softball team, but nothing else. And even that had to be fought for.
Upper management pretty much ignored any employees but the GM, AGM and line managers when visiting.
Everything became about the almighty bottom line. They lowered their standards dramatically. Changed their rules. Got rid of their dress code. Let anyone in for fear of losing out on that last nickel. While Im sure they still do quite well I can tell you employee morale their blows. I still have many friends that work there and they hate it. The clientele is pretty much all trash. Management never backs them up on any issue they have, and all of their perks are gone. Even though its not my company or my money it actually pains me to see how a company that was run so admirably and with such care for their employees have dropped into the greedy corporate mindset of most other big businesses. Its really sad.

Getting the Dave and Buster's gift card as a bonus is the most insulting shit I've heard in a while.
I'm a fairly hardcore capitalist but I still can't wrap my head around why public ownership of corporations is good. To have a company that is obligated to grow every quarter is insane, it forces companies into these situations, no choice but to grow until you're over extended and have lost the core values that got you there because they're antithetical to pumping the maximum amount of cash through the place to hit your next monthly goal.

Rupert Murdoch Commands Chris Christie: Recommit To Romney Or Else
http://www.newshounds.us/rupert_murdoch_commands_chris_christie_recommit_to _romney_or_else_11032012
A few days after Hurricane Sandy shattered the shores of New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie picked up the phone to take on a different kind of recovery work: taming the Republican Party fury over his effusive embrace of President Obama.
On Nov. 3, Mr. Christie called Rupert Murdoch, the influential News Corporation chief and would-be kingmaker, who had warned in a biting post on Twitter that the governor might be responsible for Mr. Obama’s re-election.
Mr. Christie told Mr. Murdoch that amid the devastation, New Jersey needed friends, no matter their political party, according to people briefed on the discussion. But Mr. Murdoch was blunt: Mr. Christie risked looking like a spoiler unless he publicly affirmed his support for Mitt Romney, something the governor did the next day.

I see Dave and Buster's mentioned. I makes me angry about CVS. They care more about money than employee safety. During the recent snow storm after the hurricane, I was the only person besides my manager to show up, b/c I am loyal to a fault. I told her, bluntly b/c we barely had customers, "does the company care more about making money than us being safe? No one needs to be out in this weather". She said how we need to be available for people to get their meds. People in my store are never happy. Morale is crap, but they try strong arming people into doing things, instead of making it a good atmosphere. My supervisor and I talked about it tonight. Reason why we don't get great customer satisfaction scores and such is b/c employees are not happy. I make $9.20/hr, and that extra $.20 was my "raise" of being their 1 year. 2% raise for hard work. I will miss Thanksgiving yet again this year to work. Pharmacy closes early at 2pm, but the rest of the store? Regular store hours, 7am-10pm. Why? So some douche can buy tin foil at 8pm? Why be open? They NEVER close for any holiday. Christmas, they close at 8pm. That's it. They treat their employees like such crap.

Funny, thats a Dave and Busters staple too. They never close. Christmas Eve they close at 4pm. Christmas Day and Thanksgiving they open at 4pm.
When we would get hit with blizzards they had to get permission from someone in DALLAS in order for us to close, and they would usually make us stay open way too late. During the blizzard of 96 they waited so long to close 3 managers were stuck in the building for 2 1/2 days. At one point the giant spinning sign they have out front collapsed right in the middle of the street.
Its weird that when people ask "Where were you during 9/11?" My answer is "I was home, but I had to get ready to go into work that night."

FUCK! Even my Walmart shut down on 9/11! I don't know if they actually shut the doors, but they sent home all of the employees who were "non essential". Personally I wish states would take Maines lead and force stores to be closed on Thanksgiving. Its complete bullshit that people have to leave their family dinner to go to work that day. I understand the jobs that are essential, cops, nurses, firemen. Thats something thats just expected when going into that line of work. Theres no reason for places like CVS and Walmart top be open on Thanksgiving. Wait a few extra hours and get all your money on Black Friday like you have every other year. Theres no reason for places like CVS and Walmart top be open on Thanksgiving. Wait a few extra hours and get all your money on Black Friday like you have every other year. If for no other reason than out of respect for your employees and their families. Its disgusting.
Im lucky now that my bartending job is unionized, and I get 6 shifts a year I can call out without any repercussions. So whenever the Sixers or Flyers decide to play a game on Halloween, Easter, Christmas or New Years....CALL OUT. Im not missing holidays with my kids for a day of work. Fuck that. When I was young and single and didnt have kids I would volunteer to work those shifts so my co workers with children didnt have to, now its my turn to make sure I dont miss the things that really matter in life.
I agree with you mostly, but having a pharmacy open on Holidays probably isn't a bad idea.

I am getting some really scary ideology and thinking coming out of Jews these days.
I have read up on history and get that Palestinians lost most of the land in wars that they started.
But this dangerous thinking of Jews right now is just frighting
These are quotes from one of my Jewish FB friends..
" I would want it filled with Israeli citizens with the palestinians living in Jordan, Syria, Lebanon, Egypt or any other country they want. I want the 67 borders back. They gave up land based on a faux peace deal. They should take it all and dare countries to come and get it. Have you ever seen pictures of Gush Katif before it was looted and ransacked by the animals of Gaza? It was vibrant and beautiful. It's the difference between a civilized people and the mongrels that currently reside there."
I think there is another man who thought that a certain people were animals and wanted them off their lands.
He said this early
"“The internal expurgation of the Jewish spirit is not possible in any platonic way. For the Jewish spirit is the product of the Jewish person. Unless we expel the Jewish people. Unless we expel the Jewish people soon, they will have judaized our people within a very short time.”
- Jackel, Hitler's Worldview, p. 52; from a speech at Nuremberg, January 13, 1923"
And he wanted to do this to them.
Another quote from a friend.
"I haven't been as clear as I would like so I am letting Samuel from the bible express my real feelings: Now go and smite Amalek, and utterly destroy all that they have, and spare them not; but slay both man and woman, infant and suckling, ox and sheep, camel and ass."
I do agree that you probably will never be able to live together. However this is still very dangerous thinking especially from [people who have suffered immensely in the past from the same dangerous thinking
I want Serbs of North Kosovo out too because they are nothing but a destructive force and have no claim to my lands and lost it in wars, but I can't go as far as forcing them back to Serbia or Russia where they are really from. It's just too dangerous of a ideology..
Once you are born in a land you have just as much right to live there as anyone else, history or not.
I guess man is shit whoever it is..

sure as shit the other side is convincing themselves the opposite and hence the ever lasting cycle of war, death, famine and anger. the real way to end this shit is for people to completely stop thinking any race, color and surely religion is any better than the other. they're all fucking ludicrous propositions of fantasy and control overall...and allow for people like your buddy to think such awful thoughts regardless of how right or wrong the other side is.

No, they aren't and this thinking is based on religious people pushing their own baggage onto other people or Anti-theists who are are generally just mad at daddy. Atheism doesn't force you to take leaps of faith, nor does it demand that you remain committed to some type of dogma, save what is demonstrably true. In other words, I refuse to change my mind because there is no evidence of god. If evidence were to come forward that there is indeed a god I would simply readjust my beliefs to coincide with my updated perspective on a reality that remains as constant as it was before I knew about god. It would just be universe + god at that point.

Personally I consider myself a Christian that would rather follow the teachings of Jesus and ignore the "interpretation" of his word and Gods word that men have decided on. That being said Im not a fan of anyone that belittles another for what they believe in as long as that belief doesnt hurt or hinder someone else. This goes for Christians, Muslims, Jews and Atheists as well. It just takes an immense sense of arrogance to say you KNOW for a fact how we got here and why.

The incident began when the restaurant's manager recognized Limbaugh as he was making his order. The manager approached his table and kindly asked him to leave. According to witnesses, Limbaugh then stood up and launched a racist, obscenity-laced rant.

North Carolina state representatives have proposed a new law to prohibit public exposure of women's nipples.
House Bill 34 seeks to "clarify" state law by making it a Class H felony to expose "the nipple, or any portion of the areola, of the human female breast".
Republican representative Rayne Brown co-sponsored the bill, explaining that "there are communities across this state, there's local governments across this state, and also local law enforcement for whom this issue is really not a laughing matter".
Brown said the second annual topless protest for women's equality that took place in the city of Asheville in August 2012 is partly responsible for her proposal, according to The Huffington Post.
The proposed law aims to clear up confusion from a 1970 state Court of Appeals ruling, which stated that the term "private parts" referred to in state law does not include breasts.
Women who expose their nipples would face up to six months in prison, depending on the intent of the exposure. There is an exemption for breastfeeding, and men's nipples aren't affected by the bill.
North Carolina House Judiciary Subcommittee C Democrat member Annie Mobley said she worries the law could penalise women for wearing "questionable fashions".

When told that both Democrats and Republicans had called on her to apologize, Tremblay responded: “What am I going to apologize for, asking questions?”
Last Friday, Tremblay posted a Facebook message on Glenn Beck’s fan page that claimed the U.S. government secretly carried out the “black ops” Boston attack and that the suspect who was arrested was merely a patsy. The post linked to an Alex Jones video.

A Republican congressman from North Dakota suggested to the graduating class at University of Mary earlier this month that the Boston Marathon bombings, the Sept. 11 terrorists attacks and multiple school shootings were all connected to the Supreme Court's Roe v. Wade decision that legalized abortion in 1973.

I guess I always kind of felt that prayer was a way to empty your mind. Sure, you're emptying your mind to God, but it's still emptying your mind.

Looks like Wisconsin doesn’t want to be left out of mandating medically unnecessary ultrasounds for women seeking an abortion. The Wisconsin State Journal reports that the Wisconsin state Senate will be taking up a bill on Tuesday that passed in a 3-2 committee vote. The bill, in addition to requiring an ultrasound, “would also require the abortion provider to display the image of the fetus, describe the size, location and number of fetuses, and identify any viewable internal organs or external features. The bill does not require the woman to look at the ultrasound image.”

In all seriousness that's why we need a breather on legal immigration also. By mid century we could be looking at 500 million people. There should be some quotas for a few years
Starting in 1965 , the government started reverse discrimination by letting more people from the 3rd world and telling Europeans to fuck off. They also allowed chain migration for third world immigrants. This meant the flood gates opened and just by coincidence the birth of the modern welfare state emerged

hadn't thought about abortion that way. The only good I can possibly see is with the personal circumstances of the woman who has to make that decision on whether or not to have the child, with the outcome that she feels she is better off for having the abortion. otherwise, there are no winners.

One must ask a question that few are asking. Why should the federal government and taxpayers be liable for the explosion of a private plant? Should not that plant be liable for rebuilding the damage caused from the company storing that quantity of explosive chemicals in an unsafe manner? This is a classic case of privatization of profits and socialization of losses/expenses. New Mexico lawmaker worries teaching yoga in school is state-sponsored religion
The Albuquerque Journal reported on Monday that state Rep. Alonzo Baldonado (R) voiced his concerns during an Oct. 19 meeting of the state Legislative Education Study Committee after John Baker Elementary teacher Ann Paulls-Neal told the group she employed yoga with her students, while referring to it as “stretching and mat work” and not associating it with any particular faith.
“Are we teaching yoga in public schools now?” Baldonado reportedly asked Paulls-Neal. “Are parents notified?”
While Paulls-Neal told the committee that one student, who identifies as a Jehova’s Witness, had opted out of the yoga portion of her classes because of their religious beliefs, Baldonado compared the situation to him reading Bible scripture inside a classroom.
“I think it tends to open a door to a practice tied to a religious belief,” Texas-New Mexico newspapers quoted him as saying after the meeting. “There is a good population of people out there who feel that way, so we have to ask if another option is available for them.”
Baldonado himself identifies as a Christian, and was quoted after the meeting saying he homeschools his three daughters while also taking them out of yoga stretching exercises administered as a part of their swim team. But his focus on the issue was chided by state Sen. Bill Soules (D), a fellow committee member, who called it “a concern of the far right.”
Patrick Davis, who leads the progressive group Progress Now NM, also called Baldonado’s attention to the exercises into question.
“Of all the things a legislator could focus on to get our public schools back on track, Rep. Baldonado chose this one as his most important,” Davis told the Journal. “Even for conspiracy theorists, this one seems far-fetched. How he thinks a rudimentary stretching routine meant to improve physical health could lead students to join a religious cult is beyond me.”
In July 2013, a California judge denied a family’s request to ban yoga from being included in physical education courses, despite the family’s claims it promoted an “anti-Christian bias.”
