I think some of this can be attributed to people no longer believing in an afterlife. If you think that you can blow it up and die, and then it's all over, why not go out in a blaze of glory? If you think that you'll wake up in Hell for eternity, you might give it another thought or two. Whether or not you believe in an afterlife, you have to admit it was a great deterrent.
