ok this may seem nuts to most people. I didnt see jaws when i was a kid, it was around the same time i saw Jurassic Park and I was alot more scared at Jurassic Park. Maybe its cause I dont hate sharks, i don tknow.

Anyway, I watched them both a couple months ago. First, I couldnt believe how fuckin good Jurassic Park looked. Even for now. I was wholly impressed, not so much impressed by the movie itself. And how you gonna have Sam L in a movie and not say motherfucker one time. BLASPHEMY

Jaws on the other hand was TERRIBLE. The acting is terrible. The visuals are terrible. The shark seriously looks so fake and plastic. Jaws is seriously a fuckin TERRIBLE movie

Jurassic Park is bloody brilliant movie. It's extremely well made, and extremely well written & directed. I absolutely HATE when people pretend like "it sucks". It's a fucking amazing piece of story telling.
Not only is the WAY they resurrect the creatures quite ingenious (DNA stuck in amber) but, they way it's explained in the movie (the "jurrasic park theme park ride & movie") is quite clever. The business with making them lysine deficient, but... they prey on other animals that eat lysine is also a great little piece of business. Showing how they learn & communicate ("clever girl."), added some real energy to the danger. They used frog DNA to fill in the genetic gaps... and that frog happens to be ambi-sexual (or whatever) is yet another great plot device.
Putting the kids in danger was exciting for kids AND adults. The kids in the audience could relate to them... and the adults in the audience can relate to wanting to protect them.
etc etc.

It's a really well-crafted film, and the effects hold up like a muthafucka.

Yeah yeah yeah... "it sucks". So does Forrest Gump. Whateverrr.

The acting? Incredible. The Indianapolis scene alone is worth being an movie by itself. Classic performances my all the main principles.

The visuals? Considering what it went through to film (look into that - really), it looks great, along with excellent cinematography in the boat scenes.

The shark? Considering the shark, a mechanical failure witch lead to less scenes than it was originaly intended, made the movie even more intense and suspenseful. It may look fake in some moments, but I will take Bruce over ANY CGI shark you'll see today (look at Deep Blue Sea or any other recent shark or water creature movie).

I honestly don't think you'll find anyone who would seriously say Jaws is a terrible movie. It's classic American cinema. If anything, it's a Man's Movie. A right of passage to be watched by all young boys.

Unless you were watching Jaws 3-D. Then I'd agree with you.

Unless you were watching Jaws 3-D. Then I'd agree with you.

"Japanese submarine slammed two torpedoes into her side, Chief. We was comin' back from the island of Tinian to Leyte. We'd just delivered the bomb. The Hiroshima bomb. Eleven hundred men went into the water. Vessel went down in 12 minutes.

Didn't see the first shark for about a half-hour. Tiger. 13-footer. You know how you know that in the water, Chief? You can tell by lookin' from the dorsal to the tail. What we didn't know, was that our bomb mission was so secret, no distress signal had been sent. They didn't even list us overdue for a week. Very first light, Chief, sharks come cruisin' by, so we formed ourselves into tight groups. It was sorta like you see in the calendars, you know the infantry squares in the old calendars like the Battle of Waterloo and the idea was the shark come to the nearest man, that man he starts poundin' and hollerin' and sometimes that shark he go away... but sometimes he wouldn't go away.

Sometimes that shark looks right at ya. Right into your eyes. And the thing about a shark is he's got lifeless eyes. Black eyes. Like a doll's eyes. When he comes at ya, he doesn't even seem to be livin'... 'til he bites ya, and those black eyes roll over white and then... ah then you hear that terrible high-pitched screamin'. The ocean turns red, and despite all your poundin' and your hollerin' those sharks come in and... they rip you to pieces.

You know by the end of that first dawn, lost a hundred men. I don't know how many sharks there were, maybe a thousand. I do know how many men, they averaged six an hour. Thursday mornin', Chief, I bumped into a friend of mine, Herbie Robinson from Cleveland. Baseball player. Boson's mate. I thought he was asleep. I reached over to wake him up. He bobbed up, down in the water, he was like a kinda top. Upended. Well, he'd been bitten in half below the waist.

At noon on the fifth day, a Lockheed Ventura swung in low and he spotted us, a young pilot, lot younger than Mr. Hooper here, anyway he spotted us and a few hours later a big ol' fat PBY come down and started to pick us up. You know that was the time I was most frightened. Waitin' for my turn. I'll never put on a lifejacket again. So, eleven hundred men went into the water. 316 men come out, the sharks took the rest, June the 29th, 1945.

Anyway, we delivered the bomb."

Sooooo good.

Serious question, do you HATE it.... or are you SICK OF it?
There's a big difference.

Here's why I ask:
That movie was a phenomenon. A box office blockbuster. A merchandising blockbuster. A pop culture milestone. It took Hanks (and Zemickis) to the next next level. It was immediately regarded as an "instant classic". And yet.... it's almost impossible to find a single person who even LIKES it... much less LOVES it.
Where are all the people who saw this movie over and over?
Where are all the people that were quoting it endlessly?
Where are all the people who bought it on VHS and DVD??
SOMEBODY made this movie a global smash... where now are all those people?

It's very easy to rag on that movie now. I get that. But... when you were at the theater in 1994 (or whatever year that was) were you sitting in your seat saying to yourself "this blows. I hate this movie."
If yes... so be it. But you certainly would've been in the minority.

In a similar way... people now also (claim to) hate Tom Cruise.
He made a dozen consecutive movies that made more than 100 million dollars each. And yet, the minute he started to publicly embrace Scientology... people started to say "I never liked him" and " I always hated that guy". That simply can't be true. The numbers don't crunch.

But, getting back to Gump, again I ask: did you honestly hate that movie when you first saw it?

Right on, baby. With yah 100%.

Certain films get dumped on by vocal minorities even though many more love them who aren't media obsessed.
Personally, I've always been open to films that express sentiment. You can attack Gump but you can just as easily defend it. There is nothing wrong with that film except the point of view it expresses. You can agree with it or not. You can say it isn't realistic or you can say it's a pleasant fable. It's up to you.

To be fair, Cruise has always publicly embraced Scientology. Everyone knew he was into it before her jumped on Oprah's couch and got into an on-air argument with Matt Lauer about prescription drugs, but those two events showed him as kinda nuts, ergo, must be that scientology.

I would love to not see any Cruise movie because he supports that cult, probably with millions and millions of his own money. BUT, I'll give it to him that he does make good movies - most of the time. The last two Mission Impossible movies were awesome and this new one Oblivion looks good too.

I always felt like Tom got a bum rap about the "couch jumping incident". He was being egged on by that crowd. They were SCREAMING with delight. Yeah.. he was pretty fucking intense about being happy and in love and all that good stuff. But, when you go back and watch it, it really seemed like a two way street. That crowd was FREAKING OUT for/with him. I know this is a weird analogy, but... watching Tom that day was basically like watching Robin Williams or Dane Cook or vintage Jim Carrey do a talk show. Bouncing off the walls. Big deal.
But you are absolutley right that the public turned it into some kinda "wacky Scientology" thing. Like he was possessed or some shit.
That Matt Lauer thing was tense, but... it wasn't like he just walked on set and fucking attacked poor Matt Lauer. Those two guys were having a REAL discussion. It was NOT the usual canned questions and answers. Tom had his experiences, and Matt had his own, and together... they actually had a real discussion. I actually thought it was compelling and interesting. But Tom Cruise used, are you sitting?, the word "glib" in reference to the mighty Matt Lauer... and the public practically came after him with pitchforks. It really seemed strange to me. The public really really loved Tom Cruise. He was thee biggest & most successful movie star we'd ever known. His track record was unimaginably successful, up to that point.
AFTER that time... men and women alike were making statements such as "I never liked him" and "I always thought he was over rated". Those people are liars. The whole fucking planet would line up to see his movies!

to answer the last thing, yes, i hated it when I first saw it. I was like 12. When I first saw it old enough that i could really know, it still sucks. I have only seen it 3 times, so im not sick of it.

As for the bold part, what the fuck does that matter? I dont give a shit how much money a movie made or what other people thought of it. In fact, a real problem with people is that they do just that. They judge things based on what they think other people think. Not me.

I could care less if it made 9 billion dollars (like the NFL does every year, which also fuckin sucks now) I think its a shitty movie.

Just cause a movie makes alot of money doesnt mean you have to like someone in it. Perfect example, Meet the Parents. Meet the Parents is a decent movie, its pretty funny, and it did well, and in my opinion, Ben Stiller and his movies are the biggest piles of shit ever.
Meet the Parents was just a clever movie, and it woulda been as successful if they replaced stiller with any one of 20 other actors.

He was well liked. People would see a movie simply because he was in it. They wouldn't call it by name, they'd say "I'm gonna see the new Tom Cruise movie".

I didn't say it made him good. Shit. Fuck dude. I said it made him POPULAR.
He was well liked. People would see a movie simply because he was in it. They wouldn't call it by name, they'd say "I'm gonna see the new Tom Cruise movie".

In this particular converasation, we ARE talking about DRAW... not quality.

So what. Thats the point. Just cause people do that, you act like ALL PEOPLE SHOULD HAVE DONE THAT and if they didnt or say they didnt they are lying.

The first tom cruise movie I ever saw I knew he was a fuckin joke. Days of Thunder.

You seemed not to realize that people are sheep. The movie studios keep putting him in movies and tellin the people they are huge movies, so they people go see it. Its a sheep mentality.

But some of us think for ourselves and form our own opinion.

i never said he wasnt the hottest actor. I said that didnt make him good. This debate is not about tom cruise, its about just cause someone or something is popular doesnt mean everyone likes it.

The numbers don't crunch.

also I wanna add something to this. You say the movies made 100 mill each. Its like 11 bucks to go to a movie. Say everyone only saw the movie once, that means right around 10 million people watched the movie. There is 300 million + in this country, so chances are if soemone says they never liked tom cruise, they are being honest. Cause for as popular as they are, 90% of the country didnt see EVERY MOVIE HE MADE

As for the bold part, what the fuck does that matter? I dont give a shit how much money a movie made or what other people thought of it. In fact, a real problem with people is that they do just that. They judge things based on what they think other people think. Not me.

I think you're missing the point of the bolded section, which you need the lines right after it (that you didn't quote). He's not saying it's great because people liked it; he's rather marveling at how (in his view) people loved it then and hate it now. He was wondering if you were one of those people.
His track record was unimaginably successful, up to that point.

is any ONE person a draw for movies or media in this way any longer?

truly, I think it's more that movies are driven by overall hype of the subject or theme (see transformers) versus a "star" carrying them. seriously, who is even on the level of past "stars" right now and almost certainly bring in the money almost before release? Avatar had no big name, Potter either...same truly with Transformers, but at least some had collections of decent sized names or draws. i just think the movie industry isn't what it was a decade or two back, not even close.

no, thats NOT what you did. You werent talkin of people you knew. You were talkin of people in general who you ASSUME liked him and now say he sucks. How do you know all those people ran to see those movies just cause they were popular? thats the point. You werent speaking of specific people, at least not the way you worded it.

And how is it flawed logic? If more than 10% of the country bought a ticket to go see a movie, it would make WAYYYYY more money than any movie usually does.

Another example, the most popular tv show right now is Big Bang Theory. Most people have never even seen it, yet way more people watch that show than have probably watched most tom cruise movies in theatres.

If you misworded or i misread and you were talkin about specific people you knew liked it and hten changed their mind, than my points are not valid to that. But thats now how it seemed. You seemed to be sayin people in general who say they hate him now had to like him then cause the movies were popular, and thats fuckin stupid

and again, you are assuming people jumped on the i never liked him bandwagon. Some people did, but most people in the US ACTUALLY NEVER LIKED HIM.

which is the reason i put both. Cause ALOT of Tom Cruises movies would be in that later, bigger dollars easier to pad stats era. and still, none of his movies even made it onto that list, nevermind the actual inflated list.

I would argue that Tom Cruise, the guy "everyone in the world loved" wasnt even close to the biggest movie star DURING THE TIME HE WAS MOST POPULAR. You had TONS of guys through that run. Bruce Willis, Mel Gibson, Leonardo DiCaprio (who has a movie on BOTH those lists, I might add, and who I NEVER LIKED), Johnny Depp, etc. Prob tons more, Pacino, DiNiro. I mean come on man.

In fact, most of the people I know who like some Tom Cruise movies NEVER LIKED TOM CRUISE. They just liked the ideas of the movies.

An example for me. I dont like Tom Cruise generally. I dont like Jamie Foxx, generally, and even took a shot at how much he sucks on the board the other day.
But I really like the movie they did together, the name escapes me but Tom Cruise was a hitman who got in Jamie Foxx's cab and made him take him to do his hits. I thought it was a good movie. But I STILL NEVER LIKED EITHER GUY

Tom Cruise had a HUGE following among guys my age after his badass role in Taps.

He stole that movie.

Most everyone I knew, and hung out with, knew, and endlessly quoted "Shawn"s few lines from Taps.

Even when The Outsiders came out, we were like, "Hey look, Shawn is in this!"... and although a fringe character, he stood out.

And by the time the Risky Buisiness trailers started running, he was already a star.

So much so that a lot of us ran out to see All The Right Moves just to see him playing football.

Then... Top Gun came out, and now chicks were into him too. He came off like a pussy pretty boy, and that ruined it for me. I liked him so much better when he was just "Shawn", playing in guy films.

Like most, I've seen most of his movies since then because most all of what he's done since have been big budget, super hyped films that are almost "must see" to keep up with pop culture... but I wasn't going to see "the new Tom Cruise movie". I would have seen Days of Thunder even if it was Randy Quaid behind the wheel.

So, yeah, I turned on him, but it was 20 years or so before his thing on Oprah.

Sorry, I just thought of something that might help some relate.

Ya know how Chris Tucker will always be "Smokey" to some people (like Ron)? And how he was instantly remembered him by that one character?

That's how Cruise started. This difference is, Chris Tucker is still fucking hilarious to me, and if you believe him from his "unmasked" with Ron, he turned down a lot of roles that probably helped keep him from getting too overexposed.

The first 35 seconds of this are what I consider Cruise's "Shawn" roles, before he got "famous", and started taking every shitty starring role handed to him.

Note how it starts going downhill after Top Gun (which came out before The Color of Money. The clips aren't in order).

<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/JsrPeM5P-nk" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

And, to be fair, I enjoyed Top Gun when it came out. But it got such a huge following, and suddenly so many chicks were into this new guy, Tom Cruise, that it burnt me out on him.

I'm not sure if I even really knew his name before then, but I couldn't get enough of his first films.

well, you and snacks can hang out and watch it together giving each other hand jobs

oh and add Justice to that fan watchbang party

yep, the target audience

marino lickers and chlamydia balls

oh and there is a reason you get the physics shit, bc it's dumbed down to Justice level proportions

thank GOD you got it, bc if not tom was your mental superior

dude what the fuck is wrong with you? im making opinion comments about the show and tryin to have a normal discussion. I didnt say anything bad about you. Why are you tryin to fight just for the sake of fighting? Insulting me saying im stupid when I didnt say shit about you. Now you know why alot of people left the board, its cause of dumb shit like this.

that's stupid and a pathetic whiny spat bc I insulted a show, not you

and the final part was a bust on you like people usually do and I thought you'd actually laugh like a fucking man versus getting their feelings hurt like a bitch

but yah, everyone fled my Justice std jokes and busts on snacks liking a shit show we've gone back and forth on in the past in hilarious fashion

what the fuck is wrong with you? can't discuss it without a few off color lines to rip each other...wtf is wrong indeed?

it didnt seem like a joke. Go join the jerkoff party and dumb it down. I dont know, just didnt seem to fit, and usually i get when you are goin for off color jokes. Didnt seem that way. If it was in this case, my mistake. But based on recent post history, it didnt seem liek a joke. You have been doin this all the time. Not to me, but in general. Mostly to WF

with wf, that will continue as long as he's a complete fucking idiot

there are times in the past I believed he was capable of a good debate but it always devolves into his biased and utterly ridiculous rundowns and mad rants

and the jerkoff line is just my take on how much snacks and justice LOVE that show and fight me on it. even when I last saw Tom I was laughing my ass off AT his explanation on how it's a funny show and some lines he used to "show me", just as Snacks did on this board in the recent past...it's hilarious, not the show...the explanations. even though you just said it can be funny, it was a joke that you can join them...and the physics thing is ripping Tom really, bc even HE gets those jokes so you DAMN well better

jeez

you used to roll easily with the meanest fucking jokes, like calling stugots in florida...oh wait, you really did think he called you out! that was another mean (brilliant) joke by me!

ha

snacks got real pissed I was ripping the show at first and I just kept doing it bc he HATES that (see any Marino conversation)

but I rip the show due to it's intelligence quotient overall with this nerd culture joke shit they go for, yet I know a LOT of really smart people who love it too

to me, it's all just aWFul canned laugh tracks and shitty dumbed down obvious jokes on the level of funkman when he was 10 mixed with the hot dog eating dude in a diabetic coma
