There was a good piece in this week's Economist -- the magazine I read after I'm done with the new copy of Juggs -- about Chavez' legacy. It points out that Chavez came in to power at a time when the price of oil was skyrocketing, so there was a lot of money flooding in that he could use for social programs. Since the price of gas has levelled off, that money is drying up. Which, ironically, might make him look better to the people of Venezuela, since future leaders will not be able to spend like he did, thus giving the impression that Hugo Chavez was this miracle worker who cared about the poor, unlike the cheap bastards running the place now.
