Just like a few others here over the past year it seems, my long time buddy is not doing well. Had this lil guy since getting out of college and was my first dog, not our family's, but my own.
He recently survived a splenic hematoma (softball sized) that thankfully came back non-cancerous, a vestibular event and now it all seemingly has caught up to him a year or so later. He's not doing well right now, but I'd like to believe he had an amazing 14 year journey with me. They call him the miracle dog at the vet already...here's to hoping he has a few more in him.

that type of dog yah
I have two, and the second, younger one is going to be LOST if things don't go well here.
Xrays happening as we speak, breathing still very labored and he's having trouble keeping his eyes open...not comfortable right now, but vet is working on that until we find out what we're dealing with here.

Reading this thread from top to bottom I was getting a knot in my stomach. I hate to hear/read about any sick pup, let alone one that I met (however briefly).
Glad to see an upswing at this point in the discussion. Here's hoping the little guy continues to bounce back & is running circles around you again real soon.
Spoon I feel for you man. Out of all the internet weirdos I have seen in my lifetime your one unique wackjob, and I am sure your pup has your personality. Heres to hoping the make believe man in the sky can give one of the only things you give a shit about another year or two without pain.
Right around my girls sweet sixteen about a year ago she tried going down the stairs, and i heard her tumble down each one, she couldnt move and I thought it was the end. I fucking lost it, she couldnt move, I said my goodbyes. I took her to the vet, the guy did some voodoo magic, which cost me a fucking fortune btw, I think it was around a $600 bill.
Long story short the crazy bitch is still here and seems happy. Though she could care less I exist, unless its feeding time, refuses to piss or shit outside, but will promptly go as soon as she is back inside. She is 17 and a half and I am really hoping this die in your sleep thing is actually real and she does it.
Although I managed to rant on like a selfish maniac about me, I really do understand what your going through.
What do you think is the line in the sand where you pull the trigger and put your best friend out of his misery? I really hope I can make the right decision when I have to, quickly, and not be selfish.

that's terrible man. It's tough being a dog owner, you always have it in the back of your mind that you'll outlive them, it's better than the alternative, but it still blows in the later years. Do all you can, if that doesn't work, do what's right. My next dog might just be a Cockatoo, those fuckers live forever.
(I instructed my half a Schnauzer to pray to dog jesus on your behalf, she looked at me about the way you'd expect)

pulmonary hypertension, enlarged heart and an infection
thought the treatments were helping, but not so much any longer it would seem
having some fainting spells with loss of control too now, so it all adds up to not good at all...despite meds and lots of them
there comes a time you have to let go and let them pass, but this guy is a tough sob and I know he'll hang on to the very end as he just wants to play still with me and my other pup despite never catching his breath
it's like he's running a marathon despite lying dow and his heart simply can't hold up...nobody's could
so sad, hoping this is just an episodic issue with the condition/meds...but it doesn't look good

Here's the music I had on for my pup bc we almost alway fell asleep to Sigur Ros, Echos or some classical music and he always just seemed to love it and pass out with me. Thought it would calm him as he passed, and I'd like to think it did.
This song/story from one of Sigur Ros's documentaries is pretty amazing, and the background is touching here/sad too. Always loved the dog just stumbling in at 2:18 and there's one of those odd/seemingly meaningful moments talked about at ~2:34. The dam was not wanted there and some terrible ecological ramifications, and the way the wind was awful going and and just plain stopped for them and the song was nothing short of eerie to me in that neat kind of way.
To my dog...miss you and having you fall asleep in my arms every night.
