Discussing police methods used in residential neighborhoods is fine, but starting the show today mockingly chanting "USA" and "Boston Strong" is just... dickish. I don't know. I'm not exactly one to take to the streets with an American flag in times like these, but why shit all over the good vibes? We had a terrorist attack exactly one week ago. The over-the-top patriotism always dies down on its own soon enough.

I totally get the concearn over civil liberties, and I'd love to listen to ideas about how this could be handled differently with effectiveness, but it's bullshit to just criticize everything. Lets have a discussion about how we can define scenerios or design strategies to address stuff like this. Instead of just whining about how people are happy that they caught a terrorist.
It's insensitive as fuck on Ron's part, oh the sheeple in boston are happy? I would've been smoking cigars on the street corner, I'm not afraid of Cops OR terrorists.

Ant was crazy, but I see the comparison to taxes and starting slow. The whole boiling a frog analogy. I don't think there's anything to worry about here, but I do get the comparison if you're someone who IS worried about actions over the weekend.

I feel like anytime i hear the discussion about military police and shutting down cities and "they're going to make us prisoners in our own houses", I always go back to the thought that the miltary is made up of US Citizens that have wives, and children and families....Why do we automatically assume that all of these people who have been sworn to protect us and our freedoms would automatically turn into mindless robots if they were ordered to start harassing US citizends for no reason whatsoever?
realmenhatelife

Good point caller has good point, this is a new thing we are not prepared for and we need to evolve our tactics in response to it.
Oh, something else Ant indicated this morning. Because everyone has the right to own a gun then everyone has the capability of determining if their house is secure in this scenerio.
Did the Boston PD arrest anyone for things discovered during door to door searches? That's an important point. I dont think they should be able to, and if they didn't that's precident that one of the things we're worried about civil liberties wise wasn't threatened.

But at the same time Anthony isn't admitting that taxes today are paying for much more than taxes when they were instituted.
I'll clarify. I think it depends on your attitude going in for all of this. If you look at it like "all taxes are a way the government steals my money" or "all restrictive action is a way the government conspires to take my civil liberties" then you're going to come away with the attitude that is getting tossed around. You can be as equally naive on the otherside if you just think everything the government does is good. I would like to listen to a reasonable, grey area conversation about all this and not the one side telling the other side they're unrealistic.

Where though? In places like China which I read today is trying to outlaw supertitions and has always had ridiculous and oppressive laws in place? I don't think you could compare places that have historically been militaristic police states to surmise what the reaction of our military and furthermore, citizens reactions, should that order come down all of a sudden. there would, at the very least, have to be some of them thinking this isn't right, its unamerican, we shouldn't be doing this.
I just don't think it would go down as easily as people are talking about it happening if that order came down all of a sudden without reason.

A cop being a dick to a kid who was being a dick?
I don't know where that fits into my argument about ppl being paranoid about whole cities becomming a police state, but in my experience, anytime I've been asked to show a ticket to a train conductor, or a cop I didn't need to say anything....I just show them my ticket and get to be on my way. And yes, sometimes they ask where I purchased it and I can just tell them that info as well.

I was referring more to the excuse than the situation...
A man got grilled by the NYPD after they saw him filming them removing a homeless man from the train station they were in. A Metro North spokesman offered this explanation:
“Friday was a very special day. Tensions were high on all parts, in all areas of the nation. Everyone was on edge. No harm done on a very, very weird day in the nation. “
See? That explains everything.

Was Spain a democracy similar to ours before hand? I don't know their political history. And in the case of the nazi's, that's what the German people wanted before they realized Hitler was going to start burning millions of people and try to take over the world. They felt oppressed by the Jewish people and allowed him to start a race war that gave him the ability to turn Germany into a police state. It happened over a number of years and only one type of German citizen was directly affected by it.
I'm not nieve to think that it couldn't happen here, but I don't think that simply because we have the military numbers to make it happen that citizens and the different factions of armed forces would allow it to happen so easily as it has in other places that its been enforced or has become the norm.
had to do some editing....after re-reading that last bit, it was confusing. To summarize: Could happen here, but wouldn't be as easy as people think

I'm going backwards, to the short DUI discussion. I have said the same thing Ron was saying many times, but then I picked up a personal breathalizer for 20 bucks at a Bed Bath and Beyond, in the beyond department, and I've learned that for me it takes almost 4 drinks in an hour to get to .08 , not just a couple of glasses of wine. And while I'm nowhere near being drunk at that point, I can feel it, a little. I hate these states where they are now slapping something new on you for being .02 - .07 , that's just about money.

No, because that happened in New York, the center of the world, and was therefore real.
The thing in Boston was just a weird kid with a pressure cooker and a made up problem so the government could go into people's houses and look for weed.

Catching up on jeapordy from a month ago and apparently only two Central American countries have not had military rule sometime in the past 50 years.
