As a Cubs fan, I don't give a fuck what this guy does. He spent $900MM to buy the team - he can do whatever he wants with the team. Of course Ron takes the nostalgia angle....he still think ponytails are cool and feels that the J. Geils Band should be a stadium act.

I really don't understand what Ron is talking about.
The people of Chicago do not own the Cubs. If the owner makes changes the public doesn't approve of, then they can stop buying tickets.
LeedsJr
05-02-2013, 07:50 AM
Ok, so Ron's point is, the owner can't do this because Ron doesn't want him to. Got it.
So the people who watch games for free at Wrigley are upset that their view will be blocked by a scoreboard? Poor them. I'd be more concerned about the club making the money needed to put a winner on the field.
hanso

i like the cubs because i can get fbb players and watch them on tv
The Red Sox are a neighborhood team too. That said, I'd have no problem with them taking a wrecking ball to Fenway to replace it with a modern stadium that is comparable to other ballparks.

Ron doesn't care about those people, either. His entire argument is based on the fact that he saw a game at Wrigley once and enjoyed it.
realmenhatelife
05-02-2013, 07:54 AM
I totally understand if the city doesn't want to pay for the stadium, or if they feel they haven't recouped the money on the last time they spent money on the stadium, but I dont think that's the case here.
Also total bullshit, "all the bars around Wrigley have a party, people rent our their roofs." SO basically everyone else has the right to maximize their profit ont he cubs, but this this guy cant because of nostalgia. That's just nonsense. It's a partnership, either side has the right to leave that partnership. If the bars all boycotted cubs cames and the owner bitched about it Ron wouldn't take up for the owner.

The people of Chicago do not own the Cubs. If the owner makes changes the public doesn't approve of, then they can stop buying tickets.
It's the concept of a public trust. The old robber barons of the last century had a sense of noblesse oblige going for them that the current bunch of Rand -influenced billionaires simply lacks.
I think Ron's analogy of buying and destroying a masterpiece painting is an appropriate analogy.

I dont think it's a realistic analogy because he didn't say I'm going to buy this team, knock down Wrigley, and move it to Las Vegas. It's his assertion that to be competitive these are neccessary steps, and we're not applying these standards to anyone else in baseball.
I think it's a little closer to saying I'm going to buy the Mona Lisa and hang it in my kitchen. If you dont want it going into private ownership the public needs to buy it. If the public paid for Wrigley on the same scale it paid for Miami's stadium I would be more apt to agree.
To add on to the thought. When you declare a building as a historic landmark you dont require that a business stay there, just the building. You can preserve the structure but not tie a businesses relationship to it.

I'm in partial agreement with this but I won't discount the preservationist instinct that Ron was kind of articulating. A sports team is sort of an organic ecosystem within a city and the fact that we're down to essentially two old school stadium/hubs (Wrigley & Fenway) for MLB should give pause before they get tossed away. There is an economic value to preserving the past/nostaglia even if it is difficult to quantify.
I'll stipulate that if the owner works with the community to preserve some of the flavor of Wrigley that he should be able to increase his cash flow to keep the team competitive. But if the vibe is ruined to chase the escalating costs of doing business in baseball (which is kind of in a bubble right now since the TV money is going start drying up soon) everyone is going to regret it in the long term.

It would be undeniably nicer to keep Wrigley exactly how it is. I just dont see the incentive for anyone to buy the team if they're going to be that arbitrarily restricted. We need to be fair about it. Baseball has the most revered Hall of Fame in all of sports to preserve its' history.

On one level that's true. But one of the support beams for that valuation is the nostalgia/ affection that oldies like myself have for the traditions of sport. And once the TV money bubble pops it might be viewed as more important then it is now.

Well, I naturally select to listen to shows that are funny. And this particular one isn't, sooo... :drunk:

Dunno, but the deer is all of time, and there's a fence, annnnnnd maybe you're at like a petting zoo or something? and then you're all like, "whoooooaaaaaaaaa.....space".

When the funny is doled out in tiny dollops it makes the appreciation of it that much more exquisite.
Or not.

That's gotta be Ron poking at them , right? He's the original, "we don't get ratings, if you don't like us change the channel" guy. He's never changed the show based on listeners.....

That's why I felt he said it to poke them. Or as some have mentioned, one of Ron's passive aggressive shots.
He brought it up to explain it. And the explanation is it was done in reaction to listeners. If he was in agreement he's have defended it. Just thinking out loud.

Ya gotta love O and A's attitude. They still think they're rock stars, when it is painfully obvious management gives no thought whatsoever to this channel.

I know it's a corporate thing, but when your management thinks you're not as important as you do the worst thing you can do is jump up and down pointing at yourself yelling "they dont think I'm as important as I do."
One time in a meeting this guy who has worked the same job forever announces how he wont even apply for promotions anymore because he's been passed over every time. He says that like "your loss, you've rejected me so many times now you cant have me."
But it's just white noise at this point.

I can't think of anything duller than horse racing. The race itself is fun for the few minutes it takes, but NBC is having 7 hours of pre-game. SEVEN.
And I'm in Cincinnati, right across from the Kentucky border, so the assholes wearing retarded hats and drinking mint julips is even worse here.

The only thing worse then betting on horses is betting on dogs.
I have probably wagered on everything, and I gladly tell you , I have never been to a dog track.
Or layed a wager on animal other than horses.
Cards and dice and football betting are so much better for the soul than betting on animal.

Where's Furtherman? He posted a Degrasse Tyson video yesterday on FB where he says how ridiculous the idea of intelligent design is. Basically, on this planet and out in the universe its pure fucking chaos all the time and has been for hundreds of trillions of years. Nothing intelligent about that design.

I hate the Cubs, but their diehard fans hate the Wrigley Field experience. Rosemont and Schaumburg have made offers to the Cubs organization. Moving the team to a suburb would do wonders for the team. If they move to Rosemont, the stadium would be 2 minutes from O'Hare International Airport. The isn't a downside.
