Mark Ciavarella Jr, a 61-year old former judge in Pennsylvania, has been sentenced to nearly 30 years in prison for literally selling young juveniles for cash. He was convicted of accepting money in exchange for incarcerating thousands of adults and children into a prison facility owned by a developer who was paying him under the table. The kickbacks amounted to more than $1 million. (http://blog.blacknews.com/2013/05/judge-mark-ciavarella-sentenced-selling-kids-prison-system101.html#.UZWxs4KF4wJ)

The development of a for-profit prison industry is really one of the biggest threats to our freedom that no one seems to say anything about. Instead, you get morons screaming about how Obama's taking their gun and continuing to vote in politicians who make more and more offenses punishable by jail time in prisons run for profit. It's fucking disgusting.

This is a reason why private companies working with government on any level can be a toxic combination

so funny a generalization

anything CAN BE BAD or ABUSED

the gov usually can slow things down I agree, but usually helps keep things in order yet of course it can go wrong

private companies alone are much more a problem, but I'm still having trouble seeing the gov's role in this outside of making the mistake of allowing privatization of the prisons and a crooked judge influenced by money.

Sure but when it involves fucking people over with government assistance it makes matters worse.

Private companies can be sued , Private companies can face backlash from consumers , unless they are favorites of government like GM and Goldman Sachs

I loved this episode of SVU.

Swoosie Kurtz was the judge. I saw it not too long ago.

So, are they prosecuting the developer?

Edit. Never mind. He's been convicted, but not sentenced, and has agreed to pay millions to over a thousand kids, and some of their parents. What I find odd, is it appears to be impossible to find a mainstream media source that has anything at all to say about this case. (https://www.google.com/search?q=judge+sentenced+for+selling+kids+to+priso n&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&aq=t&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&client=firefox-a#q=judge+sentenced+for+selling+kids+to+prison&client=firefox-a&hs=Rvr&rls=org.mozilla:en-US:official&source=lnms&tbm=nws&sa=X&ei=LNeWUbWVK4yu8QSphICoCQ&ved=0CA4Q_AUoAA&bav=on.2,or.r_cp.r_qf.&bvm=bv.46751780,d.eWU&fp=a677ccc7b9680943&biw=1600&bih=800)

And every source I've seen credits the website Allgov for the story. How can there only be ONE source for a story like this? It's freaking crazy!

Not surprising. But seriously... How could all of the major outlets deem this story not interesting?

I'm pretty sure this was covered by 60 minutes or something like it. Not 100%, but I do remember it being a big thing back in PA.
