We often concentrate on the darker, sadder stories in media. As Armstrong Williams said, "If it bleeds, it leads."
This thread is for those stories that uplift us and give us a small shred of hope that humanity is not totally doomed.
*WARNING* - The stories in this thread may lead to readers experiencing an increase in dusty rooms, onion-cutting ninjas, and allergy flare-ups. :o
Here is my contribution:
Children’s Cancer Center Rebrands Chemotherapy As “Superformula” (http://www.buzzfeed.com/copyranter/childrens-cancer-center-rebrands-chemotherapy-superformula)
The A.C.Camargo Cancer Center in São Paulo, is a client of the Brazilian office of worldwide ad agency JWT. Warner Bros. is also a client of JWT. Out of these business arrangements, a truly inspiring idea was created.
From the ad agency press note:
Covers for intravenous bags were constructed based on characters from the Justice League, creating…a child-friendly version of the treatment. Co-developed with doctors, the covers are easy to sterilize and handle and meet all hospital hygiene standards.
(The) experience went far beyond the covers by also providing a new look to the entire Children’s Ward: the game room was turned into the Hall of Justice, corridors and doors were decorated in the same theme, and the exterior acquired an exclusive entrance for these little heroes.
JWT even worked with Warner Bros. to produce a special series of comic books in which the Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern go through experiences similar to those of kids with cancer, and recover their strength, thanks to the Superformula.
As any good cancer doctor will tell you, the most important step in fighting the disease is believing in a cure.
This three-way collaboration is one of the best branding ideas I’ve ever seen.
See the video below.

(The clinic door says "Welcome, little heroes")
I think this is an excellent idea, and I'm rather surprised that it hasnt been done sooner (at least that I know of.) Chemo kicked my dad's ass. I can't imagine what its like to go thru a course as a child. Having a connection with a superhero who also got sick and goes thru the same treatment as you can only help a child in this horrible situation, IMO.

It is a nice idea though. I'm guessing that in the comic books it shows the super heroes going through the side effects of chemo. I would hope so.

thats what concerns me about this. I really hope they arent just lying to the kids and telling them some BS. They should still get to know whats actually going on
. As Armstrong Williams said, "If it bleeds, it leads."
That is crazy, my friend was telling me about his dad who was a hot shot news reporter and that the motto was "if it bleeds it leads". That saying has been stuck in my head for days, now I see it here, weird.
The story is cool though, I could only imagine being a kid and getting that in your arm instead of some weird bag full of liquid.

its shaped to hold the iv bags. there are certain openings and clasps that need be kept in place and monitored often. chemo ivs are tricky like that. however, im guessing you are lucky enough to not have ever had to have first hand knowledge of this.

from what ive read and from watching the video, i think the comics show the superheroes getting sick and having to go thru this iv treatment, the same as the kids. it doesnt ever say that the kids will get super powers, but they get to see their heroes go thru the same thing they are. it helps encourage them.
JWT even worked with Warner Bros. to produce a special series of comic books in which the Batman, Superman, Wonder Woman and the Green Lantern go through experiences similar to those of kids with cancer, and recover their strength, thanks to the Superformula.

^^ i cant stress this quote enough. its not feeding them a line of BS. you cant just knock all the hope out of a kid and say "that's it youre gonna die." thats not to say that the kids DONT know they have cancer. the doctor still tells the patient as much as a doctor thinks a patient can handle.
having hope make a huge difference in making it through the chemo. without that will to go on, to push through the ravages of the treatment, the chemo course will overtake you. ive seen this first hand. sitting with my dad in the chemo suite for the 6 hr treatments, i saw the young, the old, and (in my dad's case) the middle aged in the different stages of cancer and chemo courses. its heartbreaking. if seeing wonder woman take her "superformula" is gonna help some poor kid get thru that, then fuck the hell yes.

Guy does to bank what banks usually do to other people
(MSN) The idea of beating the banks at their own game may seem like a rich joke, but Dmitry Agarkov, a 42-year-old Russian man, may have managed it. Unhappy with the terms of an unsolicited credit card offer he received from online bank Tinkoff Credit Systems, Agarkov scanned the document, wrote in his own terms and sent it through. The bank approved the contract without reading the amended fine print, unwittingly agreeing to a 0 percent interest rate, unlimited credit and no fees, as well as a stipulation that the bank pay steep fines for changing or canceling the contract.

So, someone getting hit by lightning is a good thing? I don't think this thread means what you think it means. I think maybe a thread about how "you enjoy it when people who don't share you opinions get hurt because it makes you feel better about your own opinions" would be a better choice, Mr. Snarky McSnarkerton.

well, the awful Christian person did have the temerity to believe in something outside himself and science.
Yet regardless of science, don't dare say that Bailey Jay is a man, because he says he's a woman, in spite of the penis and ability to father children.

Hardly any scientists argue against faith, more for sciences and logic which just happen to fly in the face of religion. Lining that up to the trangender and transvestite rights is fucking stupid. Nice attempt to lump them together but it doesn't work. Sure some liberals line up for both, but in the end these issues are very different and it's ridiculous to package them...unless of course you have a reason to do so as i suspect u do. Ulterior motives 101, breaking down a more valid topic by linking it to a much less respected perspective or caustic issue.

I was responding to a person happy that somebody who believed something that they didn't got hit by lightening, my point was that those who claim to be the most accepting of alternative lifestyes are the least tolerant of shit they don't believe in. Relax hound dog, nothing to chase here.

So wait, u didn't link a social acceptance issue to one of logic and science in an attempt to make those with a belief of science hypocrites incorrectly?? much less tying virtue to believing in something outside themselve virtuous in and of itself? so my belief in unicorns and taco narwals makes me a better person right! faith! Bc that's what this "hound dog" read and thought it was indeed worth chasing.

I didn't quantify what I said by declaring anyone more virtuous, my point was that tolerance should work both ways, it's no more complicated than that.
And as to what my beliefs are, I've said before that my dad is a Baptist preacher, so that's how I was raised. I clearly don't adhere to everything I was taught, but I still defend peoples right to their faith. I was just comparing the obvious differences in some peoples tolerance, as it relates to science verses faith. As for social acceptance of someones lifestyle, I treat all people the best I can until they give me a reason not to, if I ran into Bailey Jay I'd be respectful and non confrontational, but if the question came up on a test, I'd say he's a man in a dress.

my whole point in this can be demonstrated like this, if somebody tells you they believe that the earth is 12,000 years old, most people on here would ridicule that statement, based on science. But if I say that Bailey Jay is a man, based on science, I'm being intolerant. It's no more complicated than that.

if that isn't fucking loaded I don't know what is
as for your dad, didn't know and must have missed it or forgot, sorry as it was an honest question
if you just made the statement you claim much clearer and without what I perceived as I put out there, this would have been a much different conversation
to me though, I think the anger toward religion is the propensity of those who DO believe trying to incorporate it into public policy, schools and or its impact on not allowing things bc of one religious belief. Evolution, stem cells, birth control, abortion...and on and on and on.

again del, you're mixing science and social issues
the earth ISN'T 12k, so it's based on fact and your fav, scientific rigor
calling a transvestite or a surgically made woman from a man is a man and actually correct, not intolerant. The mistreatment of that person by ridicule simply bc of said choice IS, and not very religious of that person. a sin is a sin, there is no real hierarchy and if you truly believe and read the bible should also not judge...not our place. it's a scientific based issue compared to a social acceptance/societal issue of our time. completely different.

I'm sorry but I will not apologize over a Ken Ham story. Take a minute and google the guy.

Yeah, people don't get how this thread works. There may not be hope for this board yet.

Atlanta Children's Hospital Surprises Sick Kids With Snowfall
(http://abcnews.go.com/Health/atlanta-childrens-hospital-surprises-sick-kids-snowfall/story?id=21167789)
Children's Healthcare of Atlanta wanted to bring the magic of the season to their sick children and families, so they created a winter wonderland of snow at all three of its hospitals -- all at the same time..."What more magical and childlike than snow -- especially in Atlanta?" asked a spokeswoman from Children's Healthcare of Atlanta.
It was a balmy 57-degree day, so dozens of these children, many in wheelchairs, hooked up to IVs and wearing surgical masks ventured out to just feel the white stuff.
Those who were confined to their hospital beds watched it from their windows.
"It all started out as a desire to do something big for our patients," said the spokeswoman. "It's such a special time of year and kids in the hospital don't get to celebrate." ...

Yeah, read the article. Guess there's no way to find out whose it was, but silly they're talking about someone throwing it out. Article wasn't clear, but I assumed it was in wreckage.
Crazy it took over a year to verify the ticket.

Second Baby Has Been Cleared of HIV With Early Treatment (http://jezebel.com/second-baby-has-been-cleared-of-hiv-with-early-treatmen-1537692744)
This is great news! I have newborns who come in to care that are born HIV+ and the fact that these little angels, who are in messed up families to begin with, have a chance at a fresh start in this area is wonderful. it definitely makes my job a little more hopeful.
After a baby born last year with HIV was deemed potentially HIV-free, there was much cause for celebration. Now doctors are even more stoked because a second child born with HIV has been treated and found to have cleared the virus...
This second case is much more cut and dry, and according to researchers, much more promising. A baby girl doctors refer to as the Long Beach or Los Angeles baby, she was born to a mentally ill mother with advanced AIDS. The Long Beach baby is 9 months old and, after being treated with the medication since birth, appears to be HIV free. According to the New York Times:
"Both DNA and RNA of the virus were found in the baby's early
blood and spinal fluid samples, so Dr. Persaud said it was virtually
certain she was infected at both. The virus began to disappear six
days after birth and was undetectable within 11 days."
The baby will stay on medication which should keep in her in remission, but as one doctor noted, "The only way we know that we really have remission is to stop therapy."
