The last time I heard about Interns taking action against their 'employer' it was because their internship was so useless it was a waste of money.
The record industry is supposed to be notoriously bad with interns. They would just make copies 8 hours a day.

hey buddays :o
and with these unpaid internships, its biased. i could NEVER be able to get an unpaid internship. why? not because im incapable, but because my family couldnt afford for me NOT to be working. so basically, i lose a chance to get my foot in the door at a good company because my family is too poor. also, these companies use these interns to do work that they could be hiring people to do, but to keep from paying benefits, they let the interns do it.

Thursday’s lawsuit cited United States Labor Department guidelines, which consider unpaid internships lawful if they are part of an educational training program and do not replace employees and if the company does not gain immediate advantage from an intern’s work. The work experience also must benefit the intern.
If you read abuot what the kids are asked to do you can see how it violates these guidelines. One of them worked 50 hours a week doing stuff like editing and proof reading, which you could argue was a replacement for a regular employee. And the other ones say they were only trained by other interns and had to work in bad conditions. So that would violate the benefitting the intern.
I was an unpaid intern at the State Department for a semester during college. I had hoped that would turn into an official job but it didn't.
After college, I was an unpaid intern at a think tank because I couldn't find a job. That turned into a paying job and got me my clearance.
If you can swing it, it can be worth the sacrifice.

I made $115/week for my internship back in 1994. I did receive college credit for it, but I probably averaged 50 hours a week.

Internships are hardly prerequisites for entry level business gigs.
And interns were always used as unpaid labor in exchange for some experience. Think this ruling is shit.

There are a small percentage of internships that actually work as designed. Increasingly though, big firms, especially in publishing and media, are using internships as replacements for entry level jobs so they get a constant stream of free labor.
I think the way Ron & Pepper run their internships are closer to the way they are supposed to work.
And Molly hit the nail on the head with the statement that they are becoming a way for the better off to hold onto the class advantages for their kids.

they are now... in my job searches, a lot of entry level job listings ask for 2 -3 years exp in that field. its really hard to get that without some kind of internship.. its really hard to find anyone hiring to learn on the job.

Increasingly? It's been like that since the Middle Ages. As for the third paragraph, as I said previously, it's hardly a prerequisite.

Like misti was saying in my company, since the recession, they have adjusted all the jobs to require a crazy level of experience. There is essentially no such thing as an entry level job here anymore unless you want to work in collections.
These people are egregious too, I've seen 4 year degree requirements on jobs that pay like 30k a year.

You need a four year degree to get lower paying jobs than that (mid to low 20s). Again, it's nothing new or odd.

exactly, and these kids back out of them as often as they honor them.
But what coach wouldn't accept a commitment from this kid?

The Ivy Leagues don't give their athletes pseudo-academic scholarships, they just give them grants from private funding.

They're dead wrong.
As the next caller correctly pointed out, even so-called "full rides" have to be renewed year to year. Kids lose their scholarships all the time.

I think the sytem is riiged in favor of the schools. If a kid walks away from a school he's committed to he loses a full year of eligibility (at least).

No, they don't have to honor a scholarship if a kid gets hurt. Ba has no idea what he's talking about.

Not a verbal commitment. They mean nothing. They're just a press conference.
Kids even back out of signed letters of intent all the time. They only lose a year if the scholarship has started - meaning they have already started school activities covered by the scholarship.

only after they sign an LOI, and only if the school won't release them from it. They can get out of a verbal anytime. This is all assuming they haven't played yet, only committed. When Calipari left Memphis Demarcus Cousins was released from his LOI and followed Calipari, not uncommon because these top players commit to a coach, not a school

I object to the word 'most' too. Most schools have student athletics but very few of them proportionally are on the level that big sports schools are.

I'm sure you and Leeds are right (any kind of verbal "contract" is almost impossible to enforce) but I still think the universities have tilted the scales in their favor to an egregious degree.

Absolutely. College athletes are chattel. The reason schools are so willing to release kids from LOI's is because they are so easily replaceable.

You didn't miss much today.
A long segment about internships, with young callers complaining they are being treated like slaves, and older callers saying how much fun they had working for free and kids today are cry babies.
Then a fact-free segment with Ba about college athletic scholarships.
Now a painfully dull interview.
